The drill is most clearly associated with Super Mario Bros. Wonder: that game’s power-up is officially called the Drill Mushroom, and it transforms Mario into Drill Mario. Its resemblance to an older item in Super Mario Galaxy 2 explains the comparison, but that game calls its item the Spin Drill.
What is the drill Mario is holding in the movie?
A community-maintained reference identifies the movie scene as Drill Mario appearing after he gets a Drill Mushroom, citing a TV spot. Nintendo’s official movie page confirms the film, but its synopsis does not identify the drill or name its game origin. So the scene-specific identification is secondary reporting, while the connection between the Drill Mushroom and Wonder is supported by Nintendo’s official game material.
Why fans connect it to Super Mario Galaxy 2
Super Mario Galaxy 2 has its own drilling power-up: the Spin Drill. Nintendo’s manual says it lets Mario drill through a planet’s ground, including to the other side, and defeat enemies. That makes it a natural visual and gameplay comparison for the movie drill—but it is not the same item name as the Drill Mushroom.

Which answer is most accurate?
If you mean the named power-up associated with Drill Mario, the answer is Super Mario Bros. Wonder and its Drill Mushroom. If you mean the older drill mechanic that looks familiar to Galaxy fans, that is the Spin Drill from Super Mario Galaxy 2. Nintendo’s two games use distinct names and descriptions, and the official movie synopsis does not settle the prop’s origin.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder is available for Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo’s official game page includes the Drill Mushroom among its power-ups.
