Why has ARK 2 taken so long?
Studio Wildcard announced ARK 2 in December 2020. In March 2023, it moved the game from its then-expected 2023 window to the end of 2024, citing the time needed to work with Unreal Engine 5 and the scale of the project. That explanation describes the delay at the time; it does not account for every later schedule change. The latest located target came in December 2025, when Studio Wildcard co-founder Jeremy Stieglitz said the studio intended to release ARK 2 in 2028. What is the latest ARK 2 release date?
There is no firm date in the cited material. The most recent public target located is 2028, stated as the studio’s intention in December 2025; no month or day was given. Snail Games’ April 2026 filing is consistent with the game still being unreleased then, but it records business and licensing terms rather than a revised launch schedule. How ARK: Survival Ascended fits into the wait
Studio Wildcard presented ARK: Survival Ascended, a separate Unreal Engine 5 game, as a way to build experience with the engine and test technology and systems such as rendering, lighting, performance, water, foliage, modding, and multiplayer. The studio also said in 2023 that some planned sequel changes—including souls-like combat, primitive-only weapons, strict third-person mechanics, and a more serious tone—might not appeal to every original-game fan. Legacy of Santiago is an expansion, not ARK 2
In December 2025, Stieglitz described Legacy of Santiago as an ARK: Survival Ascended expansion intended for the final quarter of 2027. He called it a prequel that would connect to ARK 2’s story and let the team try some planned sequel mechanics and features. It is a bridge within Survival Ascended, not the standalone sequel. Which platforms will ARK 2 come to?
