Ashina in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is fictional; it has no confirmed real-world location. The game draws on late-sixteenth-century Sengoku Japan, but its geography is imaginative—not a faithful map of a specific Japanese region.
Is Ashina a real place?
No. Ashina is the setting of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, not a real place with a definitive location or map coordinate. The game’s story includes Ashina Castle, where the Divine Heir is held, but that does not identify a real-world castle or town. Xbox Wire’s 2019 interview with producer Robert Conkey describes Ashina Castle as part of the game’s story.

What real history inspired Sekiro’s Ashina?
Director Hidetaka Miyazaki described the game as set in late-sixteenth-century Sengoku Japan, a period of political conflict and competing powers. That historical context informs the game’s atmosphere; it does not establish that Ashina corresponds to a particular historical province or site. In a 2018 PlayStation.Blog interview, Miyazaki discussed both the period and the imaginative process behind the world.
Is Sekiro’s Ashina based on Aizu?
Fans have associated the game with the historical Ashina clan and Aizu, a region in present-day Fukushima Prefecture. Scholarship on game-related tourism in Aizu-Wakamatsu discusses this fan interpretation, including connections people have drawn between the story and events associated with the Aizu branch of the Ashina clan. It does not establish that the game’s Ashina is Aizu or that its locations reproduce the region’s geography. The scholarly discussion explicitly distinguishes the game from a faithful representation of Japanese history and geography. Routledge’s chapter on Sekiro-related tourism in Aizu-Wakamatsu addresses this connection.

Aizu-Wakamatsu’s tourism connection is therefore evidence of how players have interpreted and engaged with the game—not proof of where its fictional setting is located.
