It is a separate province of Tamriel that lies to the west of Skyrim and shares a border with it. If you are looking for Hammerfell on Skyrim’s map, you will not find it as a region within the province; you are looking at a neighboring one.
Hammerfell’s position relative to Skyrim
In the lore of The Elder Scrolls, Tamriel is divided into provinces, and each one is a distinct political and cultural territory. Hammerfell sits to the west of Skyrim, and a lore overview hosted on the official Elder Scrolls Online forums describes it as a western province bordering Skyrim, Cyrodiil, and High Rock. That same overview ties the province to the Redguards and to the Alik’r desert, which dominates much of its land. The overview links to UESP, the community-run Elder Scrolls wiki, for its full entry, but it is a fan-maintained reproduction rather than an official Bethesda statement.
What the official sources confirm
Bethesda’s official game page for The Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard places the Redguards in Hammerfell and names Stros M’kai as the setting where Cyrus and the Restless League defeat the Imperial occupiers. The official ESO support answer adds historical context: when the Redguards arrived in Hammerfell, Clan Direnni had already retreated to Balfiera Island in the Iliac Bay. These are primary sources for Hammerfell’s identity and history, but neither one is a map reference.
What the sources do not establish about Skyrim
The sources reviewed for this article do not identify a precise location for the Hammerfell border on Skyrim’s playable map. They also do not document a traversable crossing, and they do not confirm whether a player can travel to Hammerfell within The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Hammerfell should be treated as a neighboring province in the game world’s geography, not as part of Skyrim’s explorable territory. Any claim that you can walk into Hammerfell from Skyrim is unverified by these sources.

How to read “in Skyrim”
The phrase “in Skyrim” is most naturally read as “in the Skyrim part of Tamriel.” The accurate answer is that Hammerfell is west of Skyrim and on its border. If you mean a location inside the Skyrim game, that is a separate question the available evidence does not settle.
