There is no single universal Minecraft.exe location. The correct path depends on whether you need the Minecraft Launcher, Java Edition, or Minecraft for Windows (Bedrock Edition), and whether the app came from the Microsoft Store.
For most Java players, the important folder is %APPDATA%.minecraft, not a file named Minecraft.exe. For Bedrock and Store-installed launcher versions, Windows normally keeps the app inside the protected C:Program FilesWindowsApps area, so the safest way to identify the active executable is through Task Manager rather than by changing folder permissions.

First, identify which Minecraft file you need
“Minecraft.exe” can refer to several different things:
- Minecraft Launcher: the application used to sign in and start Java Edition or Minecraft for Windows.
- Java Edition: normally launched through the launcher and a Java runtime. It does not generally provide one universal, user-facing
minecraft.exe. - Minecraft for Windows: the Bedrock Edition packaged as a Microsoft Store-style Windows app.
.minecraft: Java Edition’s default data folder, containing worlds, profiles, versions, logs, and other files. It is not the game executable.
Windows PC supports both Java Edition and Bedrock Edition through the relevant Minecraft account and installation flow. See Minecraft’s account and edition guidance.

Find the Java Edition folder
The default Java Edition data directory on Windows is:
%APPDATA%.minecraft
To open it, press Win+R, enter the path, and press Enter. The default folder commonly contains Java profiles, game versions, logs, resource packs, screenshots, and mod-related files.
For a particular Java profile, the more reliable method is to open Minecraft Launcher → Java Edition → Installations, find the profile, and select its folder icon. This matters because a profile may use a custom game directory instead of the default %APPDATA%.minecraft location. Minecraft documents this folder-icon workflow in its Java Edition storage guidance.
Find Java Edition worlds
Java worlds are normally stored here:
%APPDATA%.minecraftsaves
You can open that folder directly with Win+R. Back up the entire world folder while Minecraft is closed, especially before installing mods or changing versions.

If the world is not there, inspect the relevant installation under Java Edition → Installations. A custom game directory can move the saves folder elsewhere. Minecraft’s official Windows Java world-transfer instructions document the default .minecraftsaves location: Transfer a Minecraft Java Edition world to a new device.
Find the Minecraft Launcher executable
Microsoft Store or current Windows launcher
A Store-installed launcher is usually packaged beneath:
C:Program FilesWindowsApps
This is a protected Windows app directory. The exact package folder and executable name can change, and ordinary browsing may be blocked. Do not take ownership of WindowsApps or broadly change its permissions just to locate Minecraft; Microsoft-hosted guidance recommends using safer identification and repair methods instead.
If your goal is simply to open Minecraft or create a shortcut, search for Minecraft Launcher from the Start menu. Right-click it and choose Open file location if Windows offers that option. If it opens a shortcut folder, right-click the shortcut, select Properties, and inspect its target. A shortcut or app entry may be useful even when Windows does not expose a conventional executable path.

Older standalone launcher
Older or standalone installations may use a path similar to:
C:Program Files (x86)Minecraft LauncherMinecraftLauncher.exe
That is an installation-dependent legacy example, not a guaranteed path for current Windows installations. Historical launcher records also show variations such as a C:Program Files (x86)Minecraft folder. Avoid assuming that an online path still applies after launcher updates or a Store migration.

Minecraft for Windows is distributed as a Microsoft Store-style app. Its internal files are normally protected rather than installed as a simple, user-facing game folder. The package is commonly associated with C:Program FilesWindowsApps, but the exact package directory and executable should not be treated as stable.
For Bedrock, use the Start menu, Minecraft Launcher, Xbox app, or Microsoft Store installation. Directly running a copied internal executable may fail because the app depends on Windows packaging and related Microsoft/Xbox services. Microsoft-hosted guidance discusses the protected executable and directory here: How to find the Minecraft Windows 10 Edition executable.

Reveal the executable that is actually running
When another program needs the real process path—for example, firewall, VPN, or troubleshooting software—identify it while Minecraft is running:
Recommended Free Tools
- Start the Minecraft game or launcher.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Open the Details tab. If needed, start in Processes and expand the Minecraft-related entry.
- Right-click a column heading and enable Command line.
- Find the relevant Minecraft, launcher, Java, or Bedrock-related process and read its command line.
Java gameplay may appear as javaw.exe or java.exe, rather than a process named Minecraft. Check while the game itself is open; looking only while the launcher is running identifies the launcher, not necessarily the gameplay process. Store apps may show a protected or incomplete path. In that case, use the process name, the app shortcut, or Windows repair options instead of modifying WindowsApps.
You can also try PowerShell:
Get-Process | Where-Object {
$_.ProcessName -match "minecraft|java|bedrock|launcher"
} | Select-Object ProcessName, Id, Path
The Path field can be blank for packaged or protected processes, so Task Manager’s Command line column is usually the better fallback.
Choose the right method for your goal
| What you want to do | Best method |
|---|---|
| Open Minecraft | Use the Start menu or Minecraft Launcher. |
| Back up Java worlds | Open %APPDATA%.minecraftsaves. |
| Install Java mods | Open the selected profile’s folder from Java Edition → Installations. |
| Add Minecraft to another launcher | Use the official shortcut where possible; identify the active process if a path is required. |
| Create a firewall rule | Run the relevant edition and identify its active process in Task Manager. |
| Configure a VPN bypass | Use the process for the edition actually being played. Java and Bedrock do not necessarily use the same process. |
| Repair the installation | Use Windows app repair or reinstall the launcher instead of editing protected files. |
Optional PowerShell search
If you are looking for an older, ordinary launcher executable, you can search common locations:
Get-ChildItem "$env:ProgramFiles","${env:ProgramFiles(x86)}","$env:LOCALAPPDATA" `
-Filter "*Minecraft*.exe" -File -Recurse -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
This can be slow, may suppress access errors, and may not find a Microsoft Store app executable. Treat it as a troubleshooting option, not the primary way to locate modern Minecraft installations.

What not to do
- Do not assume
C:Program Files (x86)Minecraft LauncherMinecraftLauncher.exeis the current path on every PC. - Do not confuse
%APPDATA%.minecraftwith an executable folder. - Do not take ownership of
C:Program FilesWindowsAppsmerely to browse Minecraft files. Permission changes can interfere with Store updates and app operation. - Do not copy a Java
.jarand expect it to replace the launcher. Manual launching can bypass authentication, profiles, arguments, mod-loader settings, and launcher-managed runtimes. - Do not rely on a fixed Bedrock executable name or package path after updates.
If Minecraft or the launcher is missing
Install the official Minecraft Launcher through the Microsoft Store or Minecraft.net. If it is installed but crashes or freezes, use Microsoft’s Windows repair and reinstall guidance:
If Minecraft was installed on another drive, do not assume the app is on C:. Microsoft Store app libraries can use another drive, while Java data can also be redirected through a launcher profile’s game-directory setting.
