Nintendo has not announced a new Super Mario Odyssey in the official sources checked as of October 8, 2026. The most recent Odyssey is the 2017 Nintendo Switch game, and it remains the version to play if you want Odyssey today. Nintendo has not said it will never make a sequel. It simply has not announced one.
What the official sources show
The question has a narrow answer. Nintendo’s official product pages, announcements, and catalog pages that were checked do not name a sequel, a successor, or a “next” Odyssey. Anyone searching for a release date or a reveal trailer will find nothing official to point to.

That status is a finding about announcements, not a forecast. A sequel could be revealed at any Nintendo Direct or in a press release without warning, so the answer can change. Readers should treat it as a snapshot of the official record on the date above.

Why the Galaxy anniversary is not an Odyssey follow-up
The September 2025 announcement is the item most often mistaken for an answer. It celebrated Mario’s 40th anniversary and named Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2. Those are earlier games from a different series line, and the announcement does not describe either as a successor to Odyssey. Treating them as “the next Odyssey” misreads the announcement.
Playing Super Mario Odyssey today
Because no sequel is official, the practical choice is between the existing game in its available editions. The details below come from Nintendo’s US product listing.
The game itself
Nintendo describes Odyssey as a 3D adventure in which Mario travels with a new ally, Cappy. Its product copy reads: “Explore incredible places far from the Mushroom Kingdom as you join Mario and his new ally Cappy on a massive, globe-trotting 3D adventure.” Cappy can capture objects, animals, and enemies. Players collect Power Moons, which power the Odyssey airship and unlock travel to more kingdoms.
Rank #2
- Mario embarks on a new journey through the unknown, running and jumping through huge 3D worlds in the first sandbox-style Mario game since Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine
- Jump out of the Mushroom Kingdom on a journey through mysterious places and new experiences whilst sailing between worlds aboard an airship;Number of Players: 2 players simultaneous; ESRB Content: Cartoon Violence, Comic Mischief ; Genre: Action, Platformer
- Find something interesting? Toss your cap at it and see what happens! There are lots of fun and surprising ways to interact with your surroundings
- Compatible with the Nintendo Switch only
Players and co-op
- One or two players can play on a single system.
- In two-player mode, the second player controls Cappy while the first controls Mario.
- The listing names amiibo support, but it does not establish an amiibo as necessary to play.
Nintendo Switch 2 support
The US listing says Odyssey is supported on Nintendo Switch 2 and that a free update is available for it. Nintendo describes optimized visuals, HDR support, and GameShare, which lets two players share one copy with Mario and Cappy controlled on separate systems. These are changes to the existing game. They are not evidence of a new installment.

If you want to know when a sequel is announced, these are the official places to watch:
- Nintendo’s official website and its US product pages for Super Mario titles.
- Nintendo Direct presentations, which are announced in advance on Nintendo’s official channels.
- Nintendo’s official news posts, which report new game reveals and release dates.
Be cautious about leaks, fan-made “release date” pages, and retail listings that appear without a Nintendo announcement behind them. None of those count as official confirmation.
Buying the existing game
Nintendo lists a physical edition of Super Mario Odyssey for Nintendo Switch. When shopping, check that the listing says Nintendo Switch and, if you play on Switch 2, confirm that the seller’s copy and the free update are compatible with your system. Label the purchase as the existing 2017 game, not as a new installment.
Nintendo’s catalog pages in this review do not identify any other Odyssey edition or bundle. Anything that claims otherwise should be checked against Nintendo’s own pages before you buy.
