On a PC or Mac, The Sims 4 Mods folder sits in your user Documents folder at Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4 > Mods. It is not inside the folder where the game program is installed. If the Mods folder is missing, you can create it yourself or let the game generate it, as covered below.
Find the Mods folder step by step
The path is the same concept on both platforms: a Documents folder for your user account, then the Electronic Arts folder, then The Sims 4 folder, then Mods.
On a PC (Windows)
- Open File Explorer.
- Select Documents.
- Open the Electronic Arts folder.
- Open the The Sims 4 folder.
- Look for the Mods folder and open it.
On a Mac
- Open Finder and select Documents in the sidebar.
- Open the Electronic Arts folder.
- Open the The Sims 4 folder.
- Look for the Mods folder and open it.
Electronic Arts’ own help article describes the same route: open the Electronic Arts folder in your Documents area and select The Sims 4. The Mods folder is the subfolder you place mod files into.
If the Mods folder is missing
The Mods folder is not always there from the start, so you may open The Sims 4 folder and find nothing called Mods. EA Help says you can create one yourself: if there isn’t a Mods folder there, you can create one inside The Sims 4 folder. Community guidance on the EA forums suggests a different route: start the game, let it load, then exit. The game should then create the folder on its own.

Either method puts the folder in the same place. Choose whichever is easier. Creating it manually is the quickest if the game has never been launched; launching and exiting is the approach that avoids guessing the exact folder name.
Requirements and limits to know first
- Platform: Mods are for PC and Mac only. EA says they are not available on PlayStation or Xbox, so console players will not find a Mods folder to use.
- Location: The correct folder is in your user Documents area. Do not create or copy mods into the game’s program-installation directory. EA forum guidance specifically warns against that location.
- File format: Downloads often arrive as
.zipor.rararchives. Extract them before moving anything into the folder.
How to add a mod once you have the folder
- Download the mod to any location you can find again.
- If the download is a
.zipor.rarfile, extract it so the mod file itself is visible. - Move the extracted mod file into the Mods folder described above.
- Launch The Sims 4 to confirm the mod is picked up.
Troubleshooting when the folder is hard to find
Most location problems come from looking in the wrong Documents folder or from a Documents folder that is synced to the cloud. Use the table below to match your symptom to the likely fix.

Electronic Arts’ guidance is short and reliable for the standard location. Because Documents handling differs on synced and redirected systems, check the folder the game is using before you move any files.
