When does Kong: Survivor Instinct take place?
The confirmed answer is shortly after Godzilla vs. Kong. The Steam listing uses that wording, and Nintendo’s Switch listing repeats the same placement. It establishes the game’s order relative to the 2021 film, not a precise date or a measurable gap between events.
The game was released on October 22, 2024, according to its Steam listing; that is the release date, not an in-universe year.
Is Kong: Survivor Instinct canon?
7Levels co-founders Krzysztof Król and Paweł Biela describe the game as an official, canon Monsterverse story. In an interview with Toho Kingdom, Król said the team worked closely with Legendary and had to keep the game consistent with released media and other projects in development. Biela likewise said the team worked with Legendary’s creative staff and could not contradict established canon.

Those are statements from the game’s developers about its status and production. The official store copy independently presents it as a Monsterverse story, but neither the interview nor the listings provide a more precise timeline date.
What happens in the game?
The story follows David, an oil-rig worker trying to rescue his daughter, Stacy, after a Titan attack devastates a city. As he moves through damaged districts, he encounters survivors, scavenges supplies and faces human and monster threats. The Steam synopsis identifies Kong, Abaddon, other superspecies, the mercenary group called the Hyenas, and Monarch-inspired ORCA Σ technology as elements of the game; Alan Jonah leads the Hyenas.

That civilian perspective distinguishes the game’s place in the story from a film centered on Monarch or the Titans. Król described David as an outsider to the Titan world, making the aftermath of a Titan event—and its consequences for ordinary people—the player’s point of view.
What the timeline sources do not confirm
No exact year or named city
The official descriptions reviewed say the story happens shortly after Godzilla vs. Kong and describe a city devastated by a Titan attack, but they do not name that city or give an in-universe calendar year. Claims assigning a specific year or location go beyond those descriptions.

Godzilla’s absence is unexplained in the published canon
Asked why Godzilla does not appear to fight Kong, Abaddon and Tiamat, Biela said the developers had an internal explanation but would not disclose it because a future Monsterverse project might address the gap. He added that only what is actually in the game can be considered canon. That means the developers’ undisclosed explanation should not be treated as an established answer.
Its position relative to The New Empire is not specified
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is a sequel to Godzilla vs. Kong, as the Associated Press describes. Since Kong: Survivor Instinct is set shortly after that earlier film, it is reasonable to place it in the same broad post-film period. However, the game’s official descriptions do not explicitly say whether its events occur before or after The New Empire.

What the game adds to Monsterverse continuity
The developers say the game introduces new Titans to the franchise. Biela stated in the Toho Kingdom interview that “New monsters debuting in KONG: Survival Instinct are now officially a part of the Monsterverse.” This supports treating the game’s new monsters as part of the setting; it does not promise that they will appear in later films or games.
