Tower of Fantasy groups weapons into three broad roles: DPS, Defense, and Support. Those labels describe a weapon’s general job, but they do not tell you everything about how it plays. Elements, attack patterns, weapon skills, shield-breaking (shatter), charge generation, and the other weapons in your loadout also matter.
What the three weapon types do
The role names are useful starting points: DPS focuses on damage, Defense on drawing enemy attention and mitigating damage, and Support on healing and enhancing allies. These are broad descriptions, not rankings. The details depend on each weapon’s kit and on how you equip it.
| Role | Main job | Strength | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| DPS | Focus on dealing damage | Fits a damage-oriented loadout and contributes to Attack resonance when paired with another DPS weapon, according to the community-maintained weapon reference. | The label does not guarantee that a weapon is equally powerful, easy to use, or effective in every mode or elemental setup. |
| Defense | Draw aggro and mitigate damage | Supports a defensive approach and contributes to Fortitude resonance when paired with another Defense weapon, according to the community-maintained weapon reference. | Defense is not another name for high damage. A role label alone does not specify a weapon’s exact defensive or team benefits. |
| Support | Heal and enhance allies | Can help sustain a group and provide buffs; two Support weapons contribute to Benediction resonance, according to the community-maintained weapon reference. | The amount and conditions of healing or buffs depend on the individual weapon and how its abilities are used. |
The official combat overview describes general attacks, dodge skills, weapon-specific skills, and combination skills. That helps explain why two weapons with the same role can still feel very different.
How weapon roles affect resonance
Role labels also contribute to weapon resonance: a loadout bonus associated with the roles of the weapons equipped. The community-maintained reference describes these role combinations:

The cited reference gives these combinations, but current official documentation confirming exact numerical bonuses was not established here. Check the in-game description for the active version rather than relying on old percentages.
Shatter and charge are separate from role
Shatter and charge describe weapon attributes, not whether a weapon is DPS, Defense, or Support. The weapon reference describes shatter as the shield-breaking measure: higher shatter means a weapon is better suited to breaking enemy shields quickly. Charge describes how quickly a weapon builds charge; once it is full, it enables a discharge.

These attributes can shape what a weapon contributes in combat, but neither replaces the role label. A role gives you a broad idea of a weapon’s intended contribution; shatter, charge, skills, and attack patterns add more specific detail.
Role, element, and playstyle are different dimensions
Do not treat a weapon’s role as its element. Role describes its broad combat job; element describes its damage type. Individual skills and attack patterns then determine how the weapon feels to use. The publisher’s combat overview points to weapon-specific and combination skills as part of the combat system.

So a role label is a useful filter, not a complete build guide. To judge a weapon for your loadout, consider its role alongside its element, skills, shatter and charge attributes, and the resonance you want to activate.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose a role for your loadout
- Choose DPS if your priority is damage output.
- Choose Defense if you want to draw aggro and mitigate damage.
- Choose Support if your priority is healing or enhancing allies.
- Check the combination if activating a particular resonance matters to your setup.
- Read the individual weapon’s kit before deciding: the role does not reveal its full attack pattern, skill effects, or performance in a specific mode.
No role is established as the best overall choice. The right fit depends on the contribution you want and how the weapons work together; the role descriptions alone do not support a universal ranking or current meta recommendation.
