What Sugar Lumps do
Sugar Lumps are a slowly accumulating resource used mainly to level buildings. Leveling Wizard Towers, Temples, Farms, and Banks to level 1 unlocks the Grimoire, Pantheon, Garden, and Stock Market, respectively. Lumps can also refill certain minigame timers. The game overview describes a lump as taking 24 hours to coalesce; that is a stated game mechanic, not an independently measured rate. Wikipedia’s Cookie Clicker overview provides that broad context.
Recommended early spending order
The Cookie Clicker Wiki FAQ recommends the following first four spends, one lump per building. This is a practical community route; check the effect in your game if you are on a different version or platform.
- Wizard Towers, level 1: unlocks the Grimoire.
- Temples, level 1: unlocks the Pantheon.
- Farms, level 1: unlocks the Garden.
- Banks, level 1: unlocks the Stock Market.
The minigames offer different ways to interact with production and progression, so unlocking them gives you options before committing many more lumps to one building. The recommended building order is from the Cookie Clicker Wiki FAQ.

Work toward Farm level 9
After opening the Garden, the FAQ’s next broad milestone is Farms level 9, which gives the Garden its maximum plot size. The community-maintained Sugar Lump strategy guide describes this as 44 additional lumps after the initial Garden unlock. Treat that figure as guide-specific and potentially version-sensitive, rather than a guarantee for every game build.
Then decide whether to progress the Stock Market
The FAQ recommends leveling Cursors to 12 for full Stock Market office progression and access to all three loans. The strategy guide describes reaching Cursor level 12 as costing 78 lumps in total and lists loan thresholds at Cursor levels 4, 10, and 12. These are community-guide figures and can depend on the game version. If Stock Market progression matters to your play, Cursor levels are a substantial long-term investment; they are not a required step for every player.

When the 100-lump Sugar Baking reserve makes sense
The FAQ and strategy guide both include holding 100 Sugar Lumps for Sugar Baking after the earlier progression priorities. Follow that reserve if you are pursuing the guide’s route and are approaching the milestone. It is not a universal requirement to keep 100 lumps untouched at all times: spending for an unlock or an immediate gameplay need may be more useful for your current save.
Choose later levels for the way you play
If you actively use spell combos
The strategy guide places more value on higher Cursor levels for click-combo play. A lump spent to refill Grimoire mana can also be worthwhile when it enables a combo you are ready to perform. That is a situational use, not a default expense; compare the immediate spell opportunity with the longer-term level or reserve you would delay.

If you prioritize idle production or achievements
The guide suggests considering building levels in relation to each building’s contribution to cookies per second. This makes the choice dependent on your current production and goals rather than a single fixed ranking. The community guidance does not establish one best building to level for every save.
If you value minigame convenience
Garden or Pantheon refills are described by the FAQ as rarer use cases. Consider them when the refill has a clear, immediate purpose; otherwise, a lump may serve your broader building-level progression better.

A quick decision framework
- Still missing minigames? Spend one lump each on Wizard Towers, Temples, Farms, and Banks to unlock them.
- Want the Garden’s full plot? Work Farms toward level 9.
- Want full Stock Market office progression and all three loans? Work Cursors toward level 12.
- Following the community route toward Sugar Baking? Consider reserving 100 lumps once those earlier milestones are handled.
- Already past those priorities? Match spending to active combos, idle CpS, achievements, or the minigame you want to use now.
The minigame unlocks and broad milestones are summarized in the FAQ and Sugar Lump strategy guide. Both are community-maintained, so in-game behavior should take precedence if an update or platform difference changes a cost or effect.
