Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThere is no single save-file folder shared by every Steam game. The default Steam installation is C:Program Files (x86)Steam, installed games usually go in steamappscommon, and local Steam Cloud data is generally under userdata<SteamID><AppID>. But a game’s active saves may instead be in Documents, AppData, Saved Games, its installation folder, or a publisher launcher’s own location.
These instructions apply to Steam on Windows 11; paths can differ if you chose another Steam location, library drive, or Windows profile folder. Steam Support explains that developers decide where games store saves and which files use Steam Cloud (Steam Support: Steam Files).

Steam files and save files are different things
The word “Steam files” can mean several unrelated things. Finding the game’s installation folder does not necessarily reveal its save folder, and a Steam Cloud cache is not automatically the complete save the game currently uses.
| What you are looking for | Typical location or route |
|---|---|
| Steam client | C:Program Files (x86)Steam by default |
| Installed game files | <SteamLibrary>steamappscommon<GameName> |
| Local Steam Cloud/userdata data | <SteamFolder>userdata<SteamID><AppID> |
| Game save files | Developer-selected location, often Documents, AppData, Saved Games, or the game folder |
| Steam Cloud activity log | <SteamFolder>logscloud_log.txt |
Steam Cloud synchronizes files that a game supports; it is not an immutable, versioned backup. A game can also save locally outside the Steam folder even when it supports Cloud. Screenshots, Workshop items, configuration files, achievements, and profile data are separate categories and should not be assumed to share a save location.

Open the most likely save locations quickly
Press Windows + R, enter a path below, and press Enter. These commands use Windows environment variables, so you do not need to substitute your account name or assume that the profile is in a particular folder.
%ProgramFiles(x86)%Steamuserdata— default Steam userdata location.%ProgramFiles(x86)%Steamsteamappscommon— default installed-game location.%USERPROFILE%DocumentsMy Games— common save location.%USERPROFILE%Documents— check if there is no My Games folder.%LOCALAPPDATA%— Windows AppDataLocal.%USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalLow— another possible save root.%APPDATA%— Windows AppDataRoaming.%USERPROFILE%Saved Games— another possible save root.
These are places to check, not a guaranteed list of folders every game uses. Steamworks documents Windows Cloud roots that can include Documents, Local, LocalLow, Roaming, Saved Games, and the installation directory (Steamworks: Steam Cloud).

Find the game’s installation folder in Steam
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click the game and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files, then select Browse or Browse local files. The wording can vary between client versions.
This opens the installation directory, not necessarily the save directory. Also, Steam games can be installed in libraries on another drive. To view library locations in the client, open Steam > Settings > Storage. Steam Support describes the default library and managing library folders (Steam Support: Steam Files).
Some games keep saves near the executable, but many do not. Treat the installation folder as one possible location rather than the answer for every game.

Check the local Steam Cloud folder
At the default Steam location, browse to:
C:Program Files (x86)Steamuserdata
The usual structure is userdata<SteamID><AppID>. A PC used with multiple Steam accounts may have multiple numeric SteamID folders; each represents an account. Under an account folder, an AppID folder corresponds to a game. A game may have a remote subfolder and a remotecache.vdf file, but folder contents and names vary. Do not assume that every file shown there is a usable save.
To identify an AppID, look at the game’s Steam store URL: the number after /app/ is the AppID. For example, a URL shaped like https://store.steampowered.com/app/<AppID>/ contains it. The AppID is not necessarily the executable name or the game’s installation-folder name. Steam Support uses AppID 570 for Dota 2 in its Cloud guidance (Steam Support: Steam Cloud).

Steam’s client Cloud data may also appear under userdata<SteamID>7. The activity log is normally Steamlogscloud_log.txt. These are useful for investigating synchronization, not substitutes for identifying the game’s actual save folder. See Steam Support’s Cloud instructions.
If the default C: path does not exist, Steam may have been installed elsewhere. Open the Steam shortcut’s file location or locate the installation through the client, then check its userdata folder.

Check whether the game uses Steam Cloud
- In Steam Library, right-click the game and select Properties.
- On the General tab, look for the game’s Steam Cloud synchronization setting.
- For client-wide Cloud behavior, open Steam’s settings and check the Cloud setting.
The store page may also show a Steam Cloud indicator. Support is game-specific, and the developer chooses which files are synchronized. Cloud support therefore does not establish that every save, setting, or profile item is included. The signed-in account’s remote-storage page is Steam Remote Storage. A game-specific page commonly has this form: https://store.steampowered.com/account/remotestorageapp/?appid=<AppID>. You must be signed in, the game must use Steam Cloud, and the page may not show every local save. A remote file may be missing, outdated, conflicting, or incompatible with another game version.
Back up or transfer saves without overwriting progress
- Exit the game normally. Do not copy files while the game is still writing to them.
- Wait for Steam Cloud synchronization to finish. Check the game’s status in Steam before proceeding.
- Close Steam completely before manually copying files from
userdata, to reduce the chance that synchronization changes the files during the copy. - Copy the entire suspected save folder to a separate location, preserving subfolders and filenames. Use a dated folder such as
D:Game BackupsGameName2026-08-18. - Keep the original untouched. If moving to another PC, copy the backup there and retain a second copy until the game loads the expected progress.
- When restoring, protect both versions. Temporarily disable Cloud synchronization if needed before replacing local files. If Steam reports a conflict, compare the local and Cloud timestamps or versions and choose deliberately; do not assume Cloud is newer.
- Launch the game and verify the save. Confirm the expected progress before deleting any backup or re-enabling synchronization.
Steam Support describes Cloud synchronization as automated and notes that recovery of lost saves may be limited (Steam Support: Steam Cloud). Synchronization can propagate deletion or corruption, which is why a separate copy matters.
Quick Recap
If you still cannot find the save
- Make a test save. Start the game, create a new save, exit normally, then search likely locations for files modified at that time. This helps distinguish a real save from unrelated configuration files.
- Search likely names. In Documents and AppData, look for the game title, a shortened title, publisher or developer name, or an internal project name. Engine-specific folders can use names different from the storefront title.
- Sort by modification date. In File Explorer, check likely locations and sort by Date modified. Windows Search and File Explorer can help locate files in Windows 11 (Microsoft Support: Find your files and apps).
- Check hidden folders. AppData is hidden by default in many configurations. In File Explorer, use View > Show > Hidden items, or open
%LOCALAPPDATA%or%APPDATA%directly with Windows + R. - Confirm the account and drive. Check whether you are using the Windows profile and Steam account that created the save, and inspect every Steam library shown under Steam > Settings > Storage.
- Consider another launcher or store edition. EA, Ubisoft, Rockstar, 2K, and other launchers may use publisher-managed saves or synchronization. A Microsoft Store edition is not necessarily stored in Steam folders.
- Consult the game’s documentation or developer support. The developer or publisher can identify a game-specific save path; Steam Support also recommends contacting them when saves are not in expected locations (Steam Support: Steam Files).
