Where to Build Your First Base in Subnautica 2: Lifepod, Old Habitat, or Cicada Wreck?

For a first base, build close to the Lifepod. You already have a dependable fallback there, including the pod’s terminal and Fabricator, so early construction materials can be spent on storage, power and a Habitat Builder rather than on a long-distance support network. Add a small outpost only when a repeated trip to a resource field or story objective is costing more time and oxygen than the outpost saves.

For a resource station, the two strongest reported candidates are the Old Habitat caves north of the Lifepod and the Cicada Wreck (also called the Lander Garage) northeast of it. Old Habitat favors copper, silver and titanium runs but has hostile fish around the approach. The wreck is reported to have abundant lead, quartz and copper, plus a nearby current, but its murky water and awkward wreck geometry make navigation and vehicle access harder. A later supply base near the Alien Ruins Research Station can make sense when repeated gorge crossings become the main bottleneck.

Choose the base for the job you need next

There is no single permanent “best” coordinate in the current Early Access build. A starter hub, a mineral outpost and a progression base have different requirements. Decide what the structure must accomplish before placing the first foundation.

Starter hub

A starter hub should minimize risk and setup cost. Staying near the Lifepod keeps every early expedition close to a familiar oxygen and crafting fallback. It is the right choice while you unlock construction, learn the local terrain and gather the materials needed for larger rooms and generators.

Resource outpost

An outpost is justified when one destination appears on nearly every trip. Its value is not the number of rooms; it is the time, oxygen and inventory space saved by shortening the loop. Build a compact shell with storage and reliable power first, then expand only after several runs prove that the route is repeatable.

Progression base

A midgame base should sit near the objectives you expect to visit repeatedly. The Alien Ruins Research Station area is the community’s leading example: an unofficial guide updated October 4, 2026 recommends a local supply point when repeated gorge crossings become expensive. Treat that route as community guidance rather than a guaranteed map rule, and verify the landmarks and power source in your live build.

Location shortlist

Location Best use Reported advantages Trade-offs and checks
Near the Lifepod First base and training hub Existing terminal and Fabricator; easy emergency fallback Becomes less efficient when most activity moves east
Old Habitat caves, north of the Lifepod Copper, silver and titanium outpost Deposits are reported in caves below the rock structures Hostile fish patrol the open approach; scout the entrance and return route
Cicada Wreck (Lander Garage), northeast Lead and building-material runs Reported abundant lead, nearby quartz and copper, some titanium, and a natural current Murky water and wreck geometry can hide the entrance or block a vehicle
Alien Ruins Research Station area Midgame supply base Can reduce repeated gorge crossings during eastward progression Community reports differ on useful currents; confirm the actual generator site

Why the Lifepod is the best first base

The Lifepod site wins the opening phase because it gives you infrastructure before you build anything. Its terminal and Fabricator provide a known place to craft and recover, and its location is easy to relocate to when an expedition goes wrong. A nearby base also lets you test the Habitat Builder, storage layout and power behavior without committing a large inventory to a distant cave.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the first structure deliberately small: a basic compartment or shell, one or more storage containers, an access route that is easy to recognize, and enough power to keep the interior oxygenated. Do not build a sprawling hall before you know which resources the surrounding biome actually supplies. The Lifepod remains useful as an emergency fallback even after the nearby base is operational.

The limitation is strategic rather than technical. As objectives and resource runs shift toward the eastern areas, every return to the Lifepod consumes travel time. That is the point at which an outpost becomes worthwhile; moving on day one is usually an unnecessary construction tax.

Old Habitat caves: the mineral outpost

What makes it attractive

PC Gamer’s location guide reports copper, silver and titanium deposits in caves beneath the Old Habitat rock structures. Those three materials support a broad range of early construction and equipment, so the area can serve several supply needs at once rather than solving only one shortage.

What to inspect before building

The same reports describe hostile fish around the open approach. Scout the route without a full inventory, identify a landmark you can see on the way back, and locate the cave entrance from both directions. A site that is easy to enter when empty may be difficult to find while carrying a full load or fleeing a creature.

  • Mark the safest approach around the rock structures before committing construction materials.
  • Check that the cave mouth is wide enough for your intended vehicle and that you can turn around inside or outside it.
  • Look for a flat, unobstructed patch near the entrance rather than building deep inside a cramped passage.
  • Place storage where you can unload quickly without crossing the hostile open-water section repeatedly.

When Old Habitat is the better choice

Choose Old Habitat when copper, silver and titanium are the reason you are making repeated northern trips and you can reliably handle the hostile approach. It is less attractive as a blind first build: the resource mix is useful, but the route and cave geometry demand more scouting than the Lifepod area.

Cicada Wreck (Lander Garage): the lead and construction-material station

Why builders use it

Reports on the Cicada Wreck northeast of the Lifepod describe abundant lead, with quartz and copper nearby and some titanium in the area. Lead is especially useful when a project begins consuming large quantities of structural or electrical materials, while quartz and copper make the site practical for general building runs. A natural current is also reported nearby, which may support a Hydroelectric Turbine if the flow actually reaches the final building location.

Navigation and safety costs

The water around the wreck is described as murky, and the wreck’s shape can complicate access. Visibility problems turn a short trip into a search exercise, while external beams or enclosed sections can block a vehicle even when the surrounding water looks open. Approach with an empty inventory, find a repeatable vehicle line and leave a clear turning area before placing the base.

  • Trace the wreck perimeter and identify one unmistakable entry landmark.
  • Test the route with the vehicle you expect to use later, not only with a swimmer.
  • Keep the storage room outside the most obstructed wreck geometry so unloading does not depend on a narrow opening.
  • Confirm that the reported current reaches the location where the generator will stand; a visible flow elsewhere is not proof of usable power.

When the wreck is the better choice

Use the Cicada Wreck as a lead-focused outpost when construction has outgrown the local supply near the Lifepod and the route can be repeated without getting lost. It is a logistics base, not automatically a comfortable home: the murk and wreck obstacles are the price of its material concentration.

Alien Ruins Research Station area: a later supply base

An outpost near the Alien Ruins Research Station is most useful after the story route has moved you east and the journey back through the gorges is consuming a noticeable part of each expedition. The October 4, 2026 unofficial guide recommends this kind of local staging point, but reports differ about which currents are useful in the region. Arrive with enough material for temporary power and storage, scout the actual terrain, and build a minimal shelter first.

Do not treat the station area as a replacement for the Lifepod immediately. It is a progression base whose value depends on your current objectives. If you are visiting the ruins only once, carrying a small emergency cache may be cheaper than constructing a permanent facility. If the same route appears in several consecutive objectives, the outpost can pay for itself in reduced travel and safer oxygen management.

Power determines whether a site is viable

A beautiful location that cannot maintain power is not a functioning base. Epic’s May 14, 2026 building guide identifies Solar Panels, Hydroelectric Turbines, Thermal Plants and Bioreactors as in-game options and emphasizes that terrain, resources, enemies, distance and power all belong in the site decision.

Solar Panels

Solar output depends on daylight and depth. A shallow, unobstructed site may produce more consistently than a deeper location even when both appear equally convenient. At a cave or wreck, check whether the structure, rock ceiling or depth reduces the panel’s useful output. Size storage and interior oxygen expectations around the actual daylight cycle rather than the panel’s presence alone.

  • Disrupt the food Chain - lure and distract a threatening creature with a fresh fish, or simply swim as fast as you can to avoid gnashing jaws of roaming predators

Hydroelectric Turbines

Turbines require a natural current. Old Habitat and the Cicada Wreck are both reported near currents, but proximity is not a guarantee that the flow will power a turbine at your chosen foundation. Place or test the generator where the water movement is strongest, then verify that the base’s power meter rises and that oxygen replenishment continues.

Thermal Plants

Thermal Plants depend on heat. A nearby hot area is useful only if the plant can be positioned close enough to draw from it while still connecting to the base. Confirm the operating location before committing to a deep or hazardous build.

Bioreactors

A Bioreactor gives you an option when daylight, current or heat is unreliable, but it creates a fuel-supply task. Plan where feedstock will be stored and how often you can replenish it. For a remote outpost, a small reserve can prevent a power failure while you are away; do not assume a single full load will cover an indefinitely unattended base.

Power verification checklist

  1. Place the generator at the site where its environmental requirement is actually present.
  2. Connect or position it so the base recognizes the power source.
  3. Watch the power meter through a full operating period, including the part of the day or cycle when output should fall.
  4. Enter the base and confirm that oxygen replenishes normally.
  5. Add storage or a second source only after observing the real demand from your equipment.

How to scout and build without wasting materials

  1. Define the job. Write down the resource or objective that is causing repeated travel. If you cannot name the recurring trip, remain near the Lifepod.
  2. Run an empty reconnaissance trip. Carry only navigation and survival essentials. Record the approach, threats, depth changes, cave entrances and vehicle clearance.
  3. Check buildable ground. Epic advises avoiding obstructed or uneven terrain and notes that some locations are unavailable for building. Move a short distance rather than forcing a foundation into a blocked patch.
  4. Test the power condition. Check daylight and depth for solar, the strength and position of a current for hydroelectric generation, or the usable heat for a Thermal Plant. Keep a Bioreactor plan if environmental power is uncertain.
  5. Place the smallest useful shell. Start with the habitat structure, power, oxygen access and storage. Leave room for a clear entry and for a future compartment rather than filling every buildable tile.
  6. Run the route several times. Unload a full inventory, return under low oxygen pressure and approach with the vehicle. If any of those trips is unreliable, fix the route before expanding.
  7. Expand only after the loop works. Add crafting, larger storage or extra power when the outpost is saving more time than it costs to maintain.

How to decide between the three early options

Your immediate problem Recommended site Reason
You are still unlocking construction and basic equipment Near the Lifepod Existing equipment and the shortest recovery route reduce early risk
You need copper, silver and titanium from northern caves Old Habitat Reported deposits match the material shortage, provided the hostile approach is manageable
You are repeatedly hauling lead, quartz and copper from the northeast Cicada Wreck Reported concentration of those materials can shorten construction runs
Eastward story travel is forcing repeated gorge crossings Alien Ruins Research Station area A small local cache can stage supplies near the next objectives

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Building for scenery instead of a route

A dramatic view does not compensate for a dangerous entrance, poor visibility or an unreliable return path. If you cannot find the site while carrying a full inventory, move it toward a landmark or keep it as a temporary cache.

Assuming a current or vent will power the base

Environmental generators have specific requirements. Test output at the exact foundation, monitor the power meter and verify oxygen inside. If output is intermittent, add a Bioreactor or relocate the generator rather than waiting for the base to recover automatically.

Overbuilding a remote outpost

Large rooms, decorative corridors and multiple crafting stations consume materials before the travel loop has proved useful. A powered shell and storage solve the logistics problem; everything else can wait.

Blocking vehicle access

Wrecks and caves can look spacious from one angle and impassable from another. Keep an external approach, a turning area and a backup swimming route. Build storage near—not inside—the narrowest part of the route.

Treating Early Access observations as permanent geography

Map boundaries, resource placement, routes and power behavior can change. Recheck a location in the current build before following an exact landmark description or committing a major permanent base.

The western edge is a poor long-term bet

PC Gamer’s guide advises against settling at the current western edge because it describes that Early Access boundary as unfinished and says story progression leads farther east beyond the heat caves. That is a time-sensitive observation, not a statement about the final map. A temporary scouting shelter can be reasonable if an objective requires it, but a major permanent base there risks becoming disconnected from later content or changing terrain.

A practical base network for a full playthrough

Use a staged network instead of searching for one perfect home. Keep the Lifepod region as the recovery and learning center. Add Old Habitat or the Cicada Wreck only when its material loop is demonstrably useful. Establish an eastern supply point near the Alien Ruins Research Station when progression makes the long crossings repetitive. Each station should have a clear purpose, a verified power source and enough storage to support the next trip.

This approach also limits the cost of Early Access changes. If a patch moves a deposit, changes a current or alters a route, you can abandon a compact outpost without losing a large decorative build. Expand the location that continues to save time in the current version rather than preserving a ranking that belonged to an older map state.

What the current evidence supports

Unknown Worlds described the April 16, 2026 building system as “an overhauled building system designed to offer even greater customization.” That confirms the system’s direction, not a fixed list of ideal coordinates. Epic’s guide, published May 14, 2026, supplies the construction and power considerations. PC Gamer supplies the Old Habitat and Cicada Wreck observations, while the unofficial Subnautica 2 Wiki comparison, updated October 4, 2026, supplies the staged midgame recommendation. Because these guides describe an evolving Early Access world, use the locations as starting points and verify the final approach, resources and power behavior in your installed build.

The Bottom Line

Build your first permanent base near the Lifepod, then add a compact outpost where your next objective repeatedly sends you. Choose Old Habitat for reported copper, silver and titanium access, the Cicada Wreck for lead, quartz and copper runs, and an Alien Ruins Research Station outpost only when eastward progression makes the travel savings real. In every case, scout the route, confirm buildable ground and test the power source before expanding.
