The Ryzen 7 9800X3D can still be bought in August 2026. Best Buy search results showed the exact processor at roughly $444.99–$479, and Newegg listed the boxed retail model 100-100001084WOF around $479. Amazon is worth checking, but its bestseller ranking is not proof of a specific in-stock, Amazon-fulfilled offer.
Short answer: As checked on August 12, 2026, the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D is still available through major retailers, but the exact offer, seller, and price matter. Newegg showed the boxed retail model 100-100001084WOF at roughly its original $479 launch price, while Best Buy search results showed offers captured between about $444.99 and $479. Amazon remains worth checking, but its CPU bestseller ranking is not proof that a specific Amazon listing is in stock or Amazon-fulfilled.
The 9800X3D launched on November 7, 2024, at a suggested price of $479. It is no longer AMD’s newest X3D gaming processor—the Ryzen 7 9850X3D arrived in January 2026—but the 9800X3D can still make sense if it is substantially cheaper, immediately available, or the exact chip you want for an AM5 gaming build.

Where to buy the Ryzen 7 9800X3D
For the exact CPU, start by checking the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D processor search on Amazon, then compare the listing with the direct-retailer offers below. Do not assume that the first search result is sold by Amazon, fulfilled by Amazon, or covered by the same return and warranty terms as a direct retailer.
| Retailer | Exact model or offer signal | Price observed | Stock signal | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Newegg | Ryzen 7 9800X3D, retail part number 100-100001084WOF | Approximately $479; a crawled result displayed $486.99 | Listing showed in stock when checked | Whether the offer is sold and fulfilled by Newegg or by a marketplace seller; return policy, warranty handling, and shipping |
| Best Buy | Exact Ryzen 7 9800X3D processor | Offers captured around $444.99–$479 | Search results showed the processor available for purchase | Final product-page price, delivery date, pickup availability, and whether the listing is the exact boxed CPU |
| Amazon | Search for “AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D processor” | No fixed price confirmed in this research pass | Tom’s Hardware reported that the CPU had returned to the top of Amazon’s CPU bestseller list | Exact model, seller, fulfillment method, final price, condition, return terms, and delivery date |

How to check an Amazon listing safely
- Search for AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D processor, rather than relying on a generic “gaming CPU” result.
- Confirm that the product title identifies the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, not the older 7800X3D, a newer 9850X3D, or a bundle with an unclear processor model.
- Compare the model and retail part number where shown. The researched boxed retail number is 100-100001084WOF.
- Check the seller and whether Amazon or the third-party seller handles fulfillment.
- Read the stated delivery date and return policy before paying. A high bestseller position does not guarantee current stock, a particular seller, or a particular price.
What should the Ryzen 7 9800X3D cost?
AMD launched the processor at a suggested price of $479. In the August 12, 2026 retailer snapshot, Newegg was around that level, while Best Buy search results included a lower captured offer of approximately $444.99 and another around $479.
That makes the practical buying rule straightforward:
- At or below $479: the price is broadly consistent with the launch MSRP, although the newer 9850X3D should be checked before buying.
- Around $445: the 9800X3D becomes more interesting as a discounted previous-generation X3D chip, provided the listing is genuine and has acceptable warranty and return terms.
- Above $479: compare carefully with the Ryzen 7 9850X3D and other current gaming CPUs. Paying a premium for an older model is difficult to justify unless availability or a particular system requirement matters more than price.
These thresholds are buying guidance, not a permanent price forecast. CPU pricing can change several times in a day, particularly for marketplace listings.
Is the Ryzen 7 9800X3D still worth buying in 2026?
Yes, but not automatically. The 9800X3D remains a legitimate high-end gaming CPU, especially when its price is materially below the Ryzen 7 9850X3D or when it is available immediately from a seller with clear support. However, AMD announced the 9850X3D at CES 2026 as the successor to the 9800X3D and described it as a newer gaming flagship with a 400 MHz higher boost clock.

In other words, the 9800X3D should now be evaluated as a previous-generation X3D option—not as AMD’s newest gaming processor. The fact that it once earned “new king of gaming CPUs” coverage does not make that an accurate present-tense product ranking.
Buy the 9800X3D when…
- You find it at a clear discount compared with the Ryzen 7 9850X3D.
- You need an eight-core, 16-thread AM5 processor and the 9800X3D is available from a reliable retailer now.
- You are upgrading an existing AM5 system and want to avoid replacing the motherboard and memory.
- The newer chip’s price premium is not worthwhile for your gaming resolution, graphics card, or budget.
Compare the 9850X3D first when…
- The 9800X3D costs roughly the same as the newer model.
- You are building a new high-end gaming PC and want the newest AMD X3D option.
- You expect to keep the system for several years and the price difference is small enough to fit your budget.
AMD’s successor announcement establishes the 9850X3D’s newer position and higher advertised boost clock, but it does not by itself establish the real-world performance difference in every game or at every resolution. Check current independent testing before paying a large premium for either chip.

The launch shortage was real. In January 2025, AMD said that more processors were being shipped every week and that availability was expected to improve as shipments ramped through the quarter. That was a historical supply update, not a current August 2026 forecast.
AMD executives later said demand had been higher than expected. TechSpot reported that AMD linked some of that demand to Intel’s disappointing gaming performance with Arrow Lake processors. AMD was also increasing production, but the 3D V-Cache stacking process can lengthen the time needed for new batches to reach stores.

Those comments explain why the CPU could be both highly sought-after and difficult to replenish. They do not tell you whether a particular Newegg, Best Buy, or Amazon offer is available today. For that, check the individual listing’s stock status, seller, fulfillment, price, and delivery estimate.
Ryzen 7 9800X3D specifications
AMD’s current product page lists the Ryzen 7 9800X3D as a boxed AM5 desktop processor with these key specifications:

AMD’s October 2024 launch announcement described the chip as having 104 MB of total cache. AMD’s current product page uses the more specific 96 MB L3 cache figure. Those labels should not be mixed as though they were contradictory measurements: use the current product page for present specifications and treat the launch release’s total-cache wording as historical launch context.
What else do you need for a 9800X3D build?
The processor is an AM5 desktop part, so a new system needs an AM5-compatible motherboard. The platform also uses DDR5 desktop memory, and the 120W default TDP makes an adequate CPU cooler an important part of the build.

- A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis
AMD’s specifications support the following category-level checklist:
- AM5 motherboard: required for a new build. Confirm processor support and BIOS requirements with the motherboard manufacturer.
- DDR5 memory: the appropriate memory category for an AM5 system. Capacity and speed should be chosen around the rest of the build rather than assumed from the CPU alone.
- CPU cooler: plan for a suitable cooler for a 120W desktop processor. The CPU recommendation here does not endorse a particular cooler, and the processor should not be assumed to include one.
- Graphics card: still essential for a gaming PC unless your use case is limited to applications supported by the processor’s broader platform features. Choose it based on resolution, frame-rate target, and game workload.
If you already own an AM5 motherboard, check its CPU-support list and BIOS notes before ordering. If you are starting from an older AM4 system, the 9800X3D is not a drop-in upgrade: the motherboard and memory platform also change.
Bottom line: where should you buy it?
Check Best Buy first for a possible sub-$479 offer, then compare the exact model and seller details with Newegg’s listing for part number 100-100001084WOF. Amazon is also worth checking, but verify the individual listing rather than using its bestseller ranking as a stock signal.
At about $444.99, the 9800X3D can be a sensible buy for an AM5 gaming build. At $479, it is fairly priced relative to its launch MSRP but deserves a direct comparison with AMD’s newer Ryzen 7 9850X3D. Above $479, wait for a discount or investigate the newer processor unless the 9800X3D is the only suitable chip available from a seller you trust.
