The quest is the first main scenario entry in Square Enix’s official Patch 7.3 notes, and it only appears once you meet its prerequisites.
What you need before the quest appears
- Completed quest: “Crossroads,” the preceding main scenario quest, must be finished.
- Job level: Your active job must be a level 100 Disciple of War or Disciple of Magic.
- Location: You must be able to enter The Backroom, the Dawntrail-era hub where Shale is stationed.
Because the quest requires a level 100 combat job, a character who has only reached level 100 on a gathering or crafting class will not see it. Switch your active job before you travel.
Step-by-step: picking up “Targeted Tragedy”
- Open your Quest Journal and confirm that “Crossroads” is marked complete under your main scenario progress.
- Equip a level 100 Disciple of War or Disciple of Magic job as your active job.
- Travel to The Backroom and move to coordinates X:6.0, Y:6.3.
- Speak with Shale and accept “Targeted Tragedy.”
The official Patch 7.3 page, titled “The Promise of Tomorrow,” frames the update’s story around Alexandria, which is a useful check that you are in the right part of the game once the quest begins. See the official Patch 7.3 page for the full story framing.
Troubleshooting: Shale or the quest does not appear
- No quest offered: Check that “Crossroads” is complete and that your active job is level 100 Disciple of War or Disciple of Magic. Level 100 on another job does not count.
- Cannot find Shale: Confirm you are at X:6.0, Y:6.3 in The Backroom. Coordinates are shown on the map and in the coordinate display.
- Patch content is locked: Full access to Patch 7.3 requires the Dawntrail expansion or the Complete Edition to be registered on your account (see below).
Access to Patch 7.3 content
According to the official Patch 7.3 notes on the Lodestone, reaching the patch’s content requires registering either the Dawntrail expansion or the Complete Edition. If Dawntrail is already registered on your account, you do not need to buy another copy to reach this quest. Readers who have not registered it will need to do so first. Current store availability and edition pricing are not covered by the official notes, so check the platform storefront you use.
