Some grant perks after you spend Adventure Points (AP); exploration guides instead reveal collectible markers on your map. This checklist gives the reported locations and flags books that require a quest, mystery, disguise, or purchase.
How Adventure Books work
Finding a book adds it to the Books menu, but perk effects do not activate until you spend AP. Exploration books are different: they reveal a category of collectibles on the map and do not require AP to unlock. The inventory below follows the 23-book count in Gameranx’s Vatican City guide; ranks are grouped where the guide groups them, so the count is not a count of separate world pickups.
Castel Sant’Angelo
Punch Out I
Category: Brawling. Knocking out an enemy restores stamina. After passing the early chapel, head south to the southeast corner of Castel Sant’Angelo and look on a wooden crate in the guard station.
Lucky Hat I
Category: Survival. It lets Indy recover his fedora for a second chance after being knocked out, subject to the outfit cooldown described by Gameranx. Look on a table on the second floor in the northwest part of the central circular area, above a courtyard patrolled by a guard and dog. GameSpot describes the spot as the captain’s office desk; if that room description does not match what you see, use the in-game marker and nearby room landmarks.

- A WORLD OF MYSTERY — Travel from Marshall College to the Vatican, Egypt, and Sukhothai as you investigate an ancient power, meet intriguing characters, and solve riddles.
- WHIP-CRACKING ACTION — Use Indy’s trademark whip to distract, disarm, and attack enemies, swing over patrols, and scale walls. Combine stealth, melee combat, and gunplay to face the enemy threat.
- THE SPIRIT OF DISCOVERY — Move between linear, narrative-driven gameplay and open-area maps as you uncover secrets, avoid deadly traps, and solve fiendish puzzles.
Brawler I
Category: Brawling. Increases armed and unarmed melee damage. After using the zipline to reach the northwest tower, go down the stairs and check the small crate.
Belvedere Courtyard, the Apostolic Library, and Vatican City
Splitter Smash
Category: Combat. Increases the final hit’s damage before an improvised weapon breaks. Once you have met Father Antonio and gained access to the city, search the Blackshirt tent just outside the library entrance at the northeast corner of Belvedere Courtyard. The ticket stub gives the chest code: 5238.
Pep I
Category: Fitness. Improves stamina recovery. The location paragraph in Gameranx’s guide is corrupted; GameSpot places it in a tent across Belvedere Courtyard, to the right of the fountain.
Brawler II
Category: Combat. Further increases melee damage. In the base at the north end of Belvedere Courtyard, check the desk in the tent at the base’s southwest corner.
Cutman I
Category: Fitness. Improves health-bar regeneration efficiency. During the Secret of Secrets Mystery, search the safe in the room beside the altar at the west end of the Sistine Chapel. Gameranx gives the safe code as 4471.
Climbing Ace
Category: Fitness. Reduces stamina drain and increases movement speed while climbing. Go through the eastern gate, take the alley beside the second large gate, then use the whip to climb the wall. The book is on a barrel at the top.
Vatican Relics
Category: Exploration. Reveals Ancient Relic locations. Complete the House of God Mystery in the upper Apostolic Palace: climb the scaffolding at the south end of Belvedere Courtyard, enter through the high window, and solve the statue/display mechanism. Move the lever and place the medallion and grail to open the compartment.
Vatican Artifacts
Category: Exploration. Reveals Lost Artifacts of Europe. At the Vatican Post Office, buy the left pamphlet on the desk for 300 in-game currency, as listed by Gameranx.
Vatican Notes
Category: Exploration. Reveals Notes locations. At the Vatican Post Office, Gameranx identifies this as the bottom pamphlet and lists its price as 600 in-game currency.
Vatican Mysteries
Category: Exploration. Reveals Mystery locations. Gameranx identifies this as the middle pamphlet at the Vatican Post Office and lists its price as 300 in-game currency.
Vatican Books
Category: Exploration. Reveals book locations. Gameranx places this at the Vatican Post Office as the top pamphlet and lists a price of 300 in-game currency, but its text mistakenly calls it the “Notes book.” Check the pamphlet’s in-game label. GameSpot corroborates the general location and function of the exploration-guide group.

Some books require more than reaching the map marker. Story access, side quests, mysteries, disguises, locked rooms, and safes can gate the pickup. Check the journal and current quest state if a location is blocked; an apparent mismatch in a room description or a guide label is not proof that the book is elsewhere.
