One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFor a txAdmin-managed RedM server, the active configuration is the server.cfg inside the server data folder selected for that server profile. In txAdmin, open Settings → FXServer and verify the displayed server.cfg path before changing anything. Back up both the complete server data folder and txAdmin’s txData directory, then edit the file with txAdmin’s CFG editor and validator or with a plain-text editor.
Find the active RedM server.cfg first
A RedM installation can contain more than one file named server.cfg: an old test copy, a backup, a file supplied by a host, or the file used by a different txAdmin profile. The file that matters is the one associated with the server profile you actually start. txAdmin’s existing-server setup asks you to choose the server data folder and its server.cfg; that selected path becomes the profile’s canonical configuration file.

If you already have a working txAdmin panel, the quickest confirmation is Settings → FXServer. Compare the path shown there with the file you plan to open in your operating system. Matching the full path is more reliable than searching the disk for a filename, because editing another copy will not change the running server.

Use the path selected during setup
When an existing server is imported into txAdmin, the setup wizard asks for the existing server data directory and the configuration file inside it. Treat that selection as authoritative for the profile. If you later move the folder, clone the server, or create another profile, repeat the path check; each profile can point at a different data directory.

Do not edit a backup by mistake
Look at the complete filename and extension before saving. A file ending in .bkp is a backup, not the live configuration. Keep backups in a separate, clearly named location and verify that the file you open is exactly server.cfg. If two files look identical, use the path shown in txAdmin and the live console after a restart to identify the active one.
Where txAdmin stores its own data
txAdmin creates a txData directory on first launch for its account information, configuration, database, and logs. This is separate from the server data folder that contains resources and server.cfg. Backing up only server.cfg does not preserve txAdmin profiles, permissions, schedules, or logs.
| System | Default txData location |
How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Windows | <fxserver_root>/../txData |
The directory is one level above the folder containing the FXServer executable, unless an environment override is used. |
| Linux | <fxserver_root>/../../../txData |
The default resolves to the directory containing run.sh, unless an environment override is used. |
| Any supported host with an override | The path in TXHOST_DATA_PATH |
This environment variable takes precedence over the default location. |
The exact location can differ on managed hosting or after a custom installation. If TXHOST_DATA_PATH is set, use that value rather than assuming the default. The txData path is useful when making a complete backup or diagnosing profile and database problems; it is not a replacement for the server data folder containing the active server.cfg.
Back up before changing configuration
Configuration mistakes can prevent resources from starting or stop the server from launching. txAdmin recommends backing up an existing server before working on it. Make the backup before opening the editor, and include both locations:
- The entire server data folder selected for the txAdmin profile, including
server.cfg, resources, and any included configuration files. - The txAdmin
txDatadirectory, including its account data, database, settings, and logs.
Use a maintenance window or stop the server according to your host’s procedure. If your provider controls restarts, schedule the change there rather than killing a process abruptly. Give the backup a timestamp and keep the original directory untouched until the new configuration has started successfully.

Choose how to edit the file
| Method | Best for | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| txAdmin CFG editor | Most txAdmin-managed servers; seeing the profile path and validating syntax in one place | Requires access to the txAdmin panel and the correct server profile |
| Direct text editor | Filesystem-level control, bulk edits, or work while the panel is unavailable | You must independently confirm the active path, preserve plain text, and protect secrets |
| Managed-hosting control panel | Hosts that hide the server filesystem or provide their own startup controls | The provider may abstract the path, ports, and restart action; verify details in txAdmin or the provider panel |
txAdmin CFG editor
Open the server profile in txAdmin and use its CFG editor. The documentation specifically recommends the txAdmin CFG editor and validator for finding configuration issues. This method reduces the chance of editing a stale copy and gives you a validation step before restarting.
Direct editing on disk
Use a plain-text editor, not a word processor. Open the exact path displayed under Settings → FXServer, make a copy before changing it, and preserve the existing line endings and syntax. Direct editing is practical over local or remote filesystem access, but it does not automatically tell you whether another profile is active.
Provider control panels
Some managed hosts supply the startup action, port allocation, and txAdmin URL. Their file browser may show a simplified path or may not expose the host filesystem at all. Follow the provider’s maintenance and restart controls, then use the path shown in txAdmin to confirm which server.cfg the profile reads.
For a hosted RedM instance, Godlike.Host provides RedM game servers with its own game panel. It is not on Cfx.re’s list of authorized RedM hosts (redm.net, 10 Oct 2026).
What belongs in server.cfg
server.cfg is the FXServer configuration loaded for the game server. Keep the settings that define the game process and the resources it starts in this file or in files it explicitly includes.

Resources and startup lines
Resource startup commands, including ensure lines, belong in the server configuration. If a resource is missing, renamed, or placed outside the expected resources path, the live console can report that failure after restart. Check spelling and folder names exactly, and remember that an included configuration file must also exist at the path referenced by the main file.
Game-server variables and endpoints
Game settings and server variables are configured in server.cfg. Typical FXServer endpoints use TCP and UDP port 30120, but your provider may allocate different ports or require a specific binding. Use the ports assigned to your instance rather than copying a default blindly. A port change can require a provider-panel update or firewall change in addition to editing the file.
Included configuration files
A main file can include other configuration files. When a setting appears not to work, inspect those included files as well as the main server.cfg; a later line can override an earlier value. Back up the complete server data folder so those dependencies are preserved together.
What does not belong in server.cfg
txAdmin panel settings
Panel behavior belongs in txAdmin rather than the game configuration. Staff accounts, moderation controls, and restart schedules are txAdmin settings. Changing a game variable in server.cfg will not change those panel controls.
Host environment variables
Variables beginning with TXHOST_ are read by the host environment before FXServer starts. TXHOST_DATA_PATH selects the txAdmin data directory; other host variables control panel interface or port behavior and the game-name restriction. Putting these values in server.cfg is too late for panel listener configuration because the panel must read them before FXServer starts.

Edit and apply a change safely
- Plan the maintenance window. Stop the server or use the restart procedure supplied by your host. Warn players if the change will interrupt an active session.
- Confirm the profile. In txAdmin, open Settings → FXServer and record the full
server.cfgpath. Confirm that it is not a.bkpfile or an old test directory. - Back up both data locations. Copy the complete server data folder and the applicable
txDatadirectory. Keep the backup outside the directory you are editing. - Open the file. Use txAdmin’s CFG editor or a plain-text editor. If the setting is in an included file, note that file’s path before making the change.
- Make the smallest required edit. Preserve existing resource lines, variable names, quotes, and comments unless you intentionally need to change them. Do not place
TXHOST_*host settings here. - Save and run validation. Use the CFG editor’s validator to catch syntax and configuration issues before restarting.
- Restart when required. Most game-server configuration changes are read at startup. Follow the host’s restart control instead of launching a second FXServer instance.
- Read the live console. Look for missing resources, invalid configuration, binding or endpoint errors, and database failures. A clean save is not proof that the server loaded the intended file.
- Verify in-game behavior. Connect to the server and test the setting or resource you changed. If it did not change, stop and re-check the active path and included files before making additional edits.
Windows and Linux launch context
On Windows, the FXServer artifact is launched from the extracted artifact folder with FXServer.exe. On Linux, it is launched with ./run.sh. txAdmin starts automatically when FXServer is launched without a +exec server.cfg argument. This means a manually supplied startup command and a txAdmin profile can point at different configuration files if you are not careful.
If you launch FXServer yourself, ensure the working directory and startup arguments correspond to the same server data folder selected in txAdmin. On Linux, check which directory contains run.sh when resolving the default txData location. On Windows, check the folder containing the executable and the parent-directory relationship shown in the default path.
Why a server.cfg change may not take effect
The wrong copy was edited
This is the most common path problem when several installations exist. Compare the file you changed with Settings → FXServer. A similarly named file in an artifact folder, backup folder, or second profile is not necessarily active.
The server was not restarted
Many game-server settings are read only when FXServer starts. Save the file, validate it, and perform the provider-approved restart. Check the console from that restart rather than relying on an already open session.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAn included file overrides the value
Search the configuration files included by the main file. A later assignment can replace an earlier one, so editing the first occurrence may have no visible effect. Keep related files together in the server data backup.

A host setting was put in the game file
Panel interface, panel port, data-path, and game-name restrictions controlled by TXHOST_* variables are evaluated before FXServer starts. Move those values to the host environment or provider controls, then restart the panel through the supported procedure.
The provider controls ports or startup
If your host allocates ports or supplies the startup action, a local edit cannot override those external controls. Confirm the assigned TCP and UDP endpoints and startup command in the provider panel, while using txAdmin to verify the configuration path.
A practical verification checklist
- Is the profile’s path under Settings → FXServer the same file you opened?
- Does the filename end exactly in
server.cfg, not.bkpor another extension? - Did you back up the server data folder and
txDatabefore editing? - Are resource
ensurelines and included files present at the paths they reference? - Are TCP and UDP endpoints set to the ports your provider allocated?
- Did the CFG validator report no errors?
- Did you restart the correct txAdmin profile or provider-managed instance?
- Does the live console show the changed resource or setting loading without errors?
Keeping the configuration maintainable
Use descriptive backup names and keep one known-good copy after every successful maintenance window. Record which profile and host the file belongs to, especially if you administer multiple RedM servers. Keep secrets out of screenshots and shared documents, and restrict filesystem access to trusted administrators. When a change fails, restore the last known-good server data backup, restart through the normal control path, and then investigate the failed edit using the validator and console logs.
The reliable workflow is therefore path-first: identify the txAdmin profile, verify its exact server.cfg location, back up both server and txAdmin data, edit the game settings in the CFG editor or plain text, validate, restart, and confirm the result in the live console.
