His locations are not a required route through the game: use the landmark for the area you are exploring, and if he has already left, buy that area’s map from Iselda in Dirtmouth.
Where to find Cornifer in each area
The directions below follow the route landmarks in the Hollow Knight Interactive Map guide. Treat directional references as navigation cues, not exact coordinates. In most areas, listen for Cornifer humming and look for the paper scraps he leaves behind; Deepnest is the exception.

Finding Cornifer in Deepnest
Deepnest has two possible Cornifer locations, depending on which entrance the Knight uses. The route landmark above describes the lower location reached from the Mantis Village side. Unlike elsewhere, Cornifer is silent in Deepnest, so do not rely on humming; follow the scattered papers instead. The Hollow Knight Wiki also records both possible encounter locations and his silence there.

If Cornifer has left
Missing Cornifer does not permanently lock you out of an area map. The sources describe his departure triggers with different levels of detail, so the dependable fallback is to check Iselda’s shop in Dirtmouth: she sells maps Cornifer has brought back. The Hollow Knight Wiki says he may leave after enough progress in an area, meeting him at another location, or defeating all three Dreamers; the location guide also notes departure after buying the map or defeating the area’s main boss. If he is gone, visit Iselda rather than searching indefinitely.
Why a purchased map may look incomplete
A map bought from Cornifer shows the territory he has surveyed. To add rooms explored afterward, buy the Quill from Iselda for 120 Geo, walk through the rooms, and rest on a bench; the map updates at the bench. Without the Quill, the purchased map remains limited to Cornifer’s surveyed portion, according to the location guide.

Areas without a Cornifer visit
Cornifer does not visit every named location in Hallownest. The location guide lists Resting Grounds, Hive, Abyss, White Palace, Godhome, Colosseum of Fools, Dirtmouth, and King’s Pass as places without a Cornifer encounter. It says Resting Grounds’ map is sold by Iselda, while White Palace, Godhome, Colosseum of Fools, Hive, and Abyss have no map. Do not mistake a missing encounter in these places for a missed Cornifer route.
