Dinosaurs in Hytale were added to underground jungles in Update 1, and the official patch notes say they only appear in areas generated after that change. If you explored an area before the update, you will not see them there. Your fastest fix is to go to a newly generated, unexplored underground jungle.
Where the dinosaurs are
The Hytale Team’s Update 1 patch notes, dated January 17, 2026, state that dinosaurs and other new NPCs were added to underground jungles. The official notes do not name individual dinosaur species, and they do not give a spawn rate, depth range, or time-of-day rule.
A third-party location guide places that underground jungle beneath the volcanic lands known as Zone 4, or Devastated Lands. That placement is secondary-source guidance rather than something the official notes state, so treat it as a starting point and confirm it while you explore.
Why an older world may show no dinosaurs
The most important detail comes straight from the Update 1 notes:

“NOTE: These new NPCs required a change to the environment in the biome, so you will need to generate new unexplored areas to see them.”
In practical terms, a chunk of the underground jungle you explored before Update 1 was not changed to include the new NPCs. Walking back to that same spot will not bring them in. This is the only documented explanation for missing dinosaurs in a previously explored area, and it should be your first check.

Other reports of missing dinosaurs
Some players have posted that dinosaurs are missing even in worlds they believe are new, and at least one post reports dinosaurs appearing in a new world. These posts are anecdotal. They show that confusion exists, but they do not establish that every missing-dinosaur report has the same cause.

Finding the area with /locate
Update 5, dated May 26, 2026, added /locate, which can find coordinates for biomes, zones, regions, and prefabs. The notes do not say that a dinosaur target exists, and they do not document the command’s arguments. Use the in-game help for your version to see which targets it accepts before you try to locate dinosaurs directly. Using it to find the Devastated Lands zone or an underground jungle biome is a reasonable approach, since those are the categories the notes describe.

Troubleshooting steps
- Confirm you are in an underground jungle, not a surface jungle. The official notes place the new NPCs underground, and the third-party guide places this area beneath Zone 4 / Devastated Lands.
- If you explored the area before Update 1 (January 17, 2026), leave it and find a newly generated, unexplored underground area.
- Use
/locateto find biome or zone coordinates, and check the in-game help for valid arguments on your version. - If you are in a new area and still see no NPCs, make sure your game is updated. Later patch notes, including Update 6 dated August 27, 2026, describe general NPC spawning improvements, but they do not name dinosaurs or claim to fix a dinosaur-specific issue, so do not assume a patch addresses this particular problem.
What is and is not established
- Established by official notes: dinosaurs and other NPCs were added to underground jungles in Update 1, and new unexplored areas are needed to see them.
- From a third-party guide only: the Zone 4 / Devastated Lands placement.
- Not established: dinosaur species, spawn rates, depth ranges, time-of-day behavior, and the exact syntax for locating dinosaurs.
The Update 1 notes also say the new NPCs “currently use placeholder behaviours and are a work in progress.” That describes their status at the time of Update 1, and later patches may have changed their behavior.
Because game behavior can change in later patches, the details here reflect the official notes available through Update 6 (August 27, 2026). If your game version is newer, check the official patch notes first.
