For Elden Ring on Steam for Windows, the save is in %USERPROFILE%AppDataRoamingEldenRing<64-bit Steam ID>, in a file named ER0000.sl2. In File Explorer, enter %APPDATA% in the address bar, then open EldenRing and the numbered folder inside it. Linux and Steam Deck players using Proton have a different path.
Find the save folder on Windows
- Open File Explorer and type
%APPDATA%in the address bar, then press Enter. This opens the Roaming folder under your Windows user profile. - Open
EldenRing, then open the folder named with your 64-bit Steam ID. - Find
ER0000.sl2. SteamDB lists this filename and the corresponding Windows Steam save location in its Elden Ring Steam Cloud configuration.
The full path is %USERPROFILE%AppDataRoamingEldenRing<64-bit Steam ID>ER0000.sl2. The AppData directory is hidden during ordinary folder browsing, but using %APPDATA% takes you directly to its Roaming subfolder. A Steam Community save-location discussion also describes this route.
Find the folder on Linux or Steam Deck
Steam runs the Windows version under Proton, so the save sits inside the game’s compatibility prefix rather than in a Windows-style user folder. The Elden Ring Save Manager installation guide documents these locations:

On Steam Deck, switch to Desktop Mode to browse the files. The prefix root depends on whether Steam is installed natively or as a Flatpak; the Save Manager installation guide documents both layouts.

Back up or restore a save safely
Before editing, moving, or restoring a save, copy the entire local EldenRing folder—or at least ER0000.sl2—to a separate location. A separate backup helps preserve a known copy if a transfer goes wrong.
Steam Cloud synchronizes game files, but it does not guarantee that the version you intend to keep will win if separate copies have changed. Steam Support explains that unsynchronized changes in two locations can produce a conflict and that choosing the wrong copy can risk progress. If Steam presents a Cloud conflict prompt, check which copy is current before selecting a version; do not overwrite a save until you have made a separate backup.

Scope of these paths
The Windows path and ER0000.sl2 filename are documented for the Steam version. The Proton paths above cover native and Flatpak Steam installations on Linux, including Steam Deck use. These sources do not establish a save location for every other PC launcher, so do not assume the Steam path applies to a non-Steam edition.
