The most effective discovery habit combines those storefronts with creator pages, developer logs, jams, bundles and genre communities.
Before you download or pay, inspect the individual game page. Confirm the supported operating system, whether the game runs in a browser or needs a download, the current price and demo status, required client, seller of record and, where applicable, the service that redeems a game key.

Which indie-game destination should you try first?
These services serve different discovery needs rather than offering interchangeable copies of the same catalog. Choose a starting point based on how you want to find games:

No single storefront contains every independent game. A project may appear on one service, on several services with different editions, or only on its creator’s page.

Why itch.io is the strongest route for experimental discovery
itch.io describes itself as “a simple way to find and share indie games online for free.” Its homepage puts discovery controls close to the catalog instead of treating search as the only route. You can move from a broad tag to a theme, then from a theme to a jam, featured listing or bundle.
Use tags and themes to narrow a huge catalog
- Open the tag or genre that matches the experience you want, such as a particular story style, mechanic or visual theme.
- Sort through the resulting projects by reading the short descriptions and checking screenshots or gameplay media.
- Open the full project page before downloading. Look for operating-system labels, controls, accessibility notes, installation instructions and the creator’s update history.
Tags are useful for finding a direction, not for guaranteeing quality, age suitability or technical support. Treat each project page as the authoritative description of that game.
Browse jams, featured listings, demos and bundles
Game jams group projects made for a shared theme or deadline, which makes them an efficient way to find ideas that have not yet reached a conventional store. Featured listings can surface projects selected for visibility, while demos let you test a game before buying. Bundles group several projects under one purchase or distribution arrangement; read the bundle page to see exactly what is included and how each item is delivered.

Follow a creator, not just a single game
A creator page can reveal prototypes, sequels, downloadable extras and updates that a storefront-wide search would miss. itch.io’s creator documentation describes project pages, project classification, platform tags and embedded formats such as HTML5 alongside downloadable uploads. Follow the creator when the page offers that option, then check update posts or developer logs for new builds and announcements.
Support levels vary widely. Some creators provide detailed troubleshooting and community discussion; others publish a short prototype with no continuing support. Read the project description and recent updates before assuming that an old build still works on your operating system.
How to use GOG’s curated indie catalog
GOG presents itself as a curated digital store and includes an Indie category. That makes it useful when you prefer a more selective catalog view instead of an open upload marketplace.

- Open the store’s Indie category and scan the descriptions, screenshots and release information.
- Select a game to inspect its supported operating systems and the exact edition being sold.
- Read the download section on that title page. GOG describes its Galaxy client as optional, but the practical download path and any additional requirements are still title-specific.
- Check the purchase region, language options, age information and refund terms shown for your account before completing checkout.
Do not infer a game’s offline behavior, digital-rights restrictions or hardware support from another GOG listing. Product specifications can differ between titles, editions and operating systems.

What the Epic Games Store adds to indie discovery
The Epic Games Store is another PC catalog to check when a developer announces a release or when you are comparing where a game is sold. Its distribution page also documents a self-publishing route for developers, so its indie relevance is not limited to large publishers.
Use it as a second catalog check
Search for the game by its exact title, then open the product page rather than relying on a search-result snippet. Confirm country availability, supported operating system, required account or client, content requirements, refund rules and whether the listing is for a direct purchase or another redemption method. A game’s presence in one country does not establish availability everywhere.
Understand the developer-side terms without treating them as a player guarantee
On the official distribution page checked October 13, 2026, Epic says developers receive a 100% revenue share on the first US$1 million in net revenue per product per year, followed by an 88%/12% model. The same page lists a recoupable US$100 submission fee per game. Epic also reports more than 295 million users across 187 countries and support for 16 languages. These are Epic’s own current claims and terms, which can change; they describe the publishing channel, not a promise that any particular indie game is listed in your region.
Find games through creators and communities
Store search is only one part of indie discovery. Creator-led routes often expose projects earlier and provide context that a sales page cannot.

Developer logs and project updates
Read development logs for design changes, prototype downloads, accessibility improvements and release plans. An update date also helps you judge whether a build is actively maintained. If a post links to a newer version, use that current project page rather than an old attachment.
Jams and themed collections
Jams are time-boxed events with a shared prompt. Browse the entries, then inspect each project’s platform label and installation notes. Themed collections and bundles can reveal several creators working in a genre or subject area, but check whether the collection contains demos, full games, soundtracks or mixed formats.
Community discussions and recommendations
Community comments can reveal controller issues, Linux workarounds, translation status or content warnings that are absent from a short store description. Treat comments as user reports: compare several recent posts and look for a response from the creator before relying on a fix.

For newsletters, festivals, streamers and external curated lists, verify that the channel is currently active and still covers the genre you want. A recommendation is a lead; the game’s own listing remains the place to confirm price, platform and delivery.

A verification checklist before you install or buy
Use this checklist on every unfamiliar project, especially a free download from a small creator:
- Platform: Confirm Windows, macOS, Linux or another supported system on the game page. Do not assume that a download labeled “desktop” supports every desktop operating system.
- Format: Determine whether the game runs in your browser, downloads a standalone build, installs through a store client or provides a key redeemed on another service.
- Build details: Read the version number, release date, update notes and installation instructions. An abandoned prototype may need a workaround that a current release does not.
- Price and trial: Check whether the listing is free, pay-what-you-want, paid, bundled or accompanied by a demo. Prices and promotions change, so use the live title page.
- Seller and delivery: Identify who processes checkout and where the game is delivered. A purchase page and a key-redemption page are not necessarily the same service.
- Requirements: Review storage, memory, graphics, controller, browser and runtime requirements when they are listed.
- Safety and permissions: Download from the creator or storefront page, scan unfamiliar files with your normal security tools and avoid installers that request unrelated access.
- Support: Find the creator’s contact, issue tracker, discussion area or update log before installing if you may need help.
- Accessibility and content: Look for captions, remapping, color options, flashing-light warnings and age or content notices; ask the creator when the page is silent.
Browser game or download: choose the lower-friction option
Browser-playable projects
An embedded HTML5 game can be the quickest way to sample an unfamiliar creator. It avoids a local installer, but performance depends on the browser and the page may require a modern graphics feature, keyboard controls or a stable connection. Save behavior can also differ between browsers, so read the project notes before assuming progress will transfer.
Downloadable builds
Downloads can offer better performance, offline play or controller support, but they require storage and an installation step. Match the file to your operating system, follow the creator’s instructions and keep the download page bookmarked in case an update replaces the original build.
How to build a repeatable indie-discovery routine
- Pick a discovery lane. Start with an itch.io tag, jam, bundle or creator page; use GOG’s Indie category for curated browsing; or search the Epic Games Store when you have a specific release in mind.
- Save candidates. Keep a short list with the game name, creator, platform and page where you found it. This prevents losing a promising prototype in a fast-moving feed.
- Test before committing. Prefer a browser build or demo when available. Note controls, performance, accessibility and whether the game’s tone matches its description.
- Cross-check availability. If the game is sold in multiple places, compare the title pages for operating-system support, edition contents, client requirements and delivery method.
- Follow the creator. Subscribe to updates or revisit the project page so you hear about patches, translations and related releases.
- Share useful feedback. A specific report with your operating system, game version and steps to reproduce a problem is more helpful than a one-line complaint.
Use a major storefront as a benchmark, not your only source
Steam’s official store currently exposes recommendation feeds, tag exploration, popular new releases, upcoming games, special offers and trending free games. Those surfaces are useful for checking whether an indie title has another edition, reading a larger body of user discussion or comparing release timing. They do not replace creator-led discovery: a jam entry, browser prototype or early project may never use the same storefront path.
The practical approach is to let each route do what it is best at. Use itch.io to explore the edges of independent development, GOG to browse a curated indie shelf, Epic to check another major PC catalog, and creator communities to find projects before conventional store algorithms surface them. Verify the title-level details every time, because access, price, platform support and delivery can change independently for each game.
