Bastion remnant courtyards and fortress chests can also yield it, but neither is guaranteed. Once you have a starter supply, planting it on soul sand is the only way to grow more, so a farm is the dependable long-term answer.
Where to look first
The places below are ordered by how directly the sources support them. The first two are the most dependable starting points. The rest are useful to know but depend on chance or on details that the current sources do not fully settle.
1. Nether fortress gardens
Minecraft’s official Help pages state that Nether fortresses are a place where Nether wart can be found. Search the interior of the fortress for the garden area, where the wart is planted as part of the structure. This is the most direct source for a first harvest.
2. Nether fortress chests
A secondary Minecraft Wiki reference lists Nether wart among the loot that fortress chests can contain. Chest contents are randomised, so a chest may hold nothing useful. Treat chests as a bonus to the garden rather than a plan on their own.

The same reference gives a 17.9% chance of finding the item and a stack of 3 to 7 wart. Those figures are not tied to a specific edition or version in the sources available, so do not read them as universal odds for every version of the game. Use them only as a rough sense of how often chests can help.
3. Bastion remnant courtyards
The same wiki reference says Nether wart can generate in the courtyards of housing-unit bastion remnants. Minecraft’s official material confirms that bastion remnants exist in several variants, but it does not describe this wart garden in detail, so this location rests on the secondary source. Expect the courtyard to be the place to check, not a guaranteed crop.

Bastions are the more dangerous of the two structures. Minecraft’s official support page describes them as populated by piglins and hoglins, so approach with a plan and a clear route back.
4. Crimson Forest floor
Minecraft’s official Crimson Forest article says the forest floor is dotted with Nether wart among other vegetation. Do not confuse this with warped wart blocks, which are a separate block found in warped forests and are not the same plant. The available sources do not give an edition-by-edition account of how reliably wart generates in crimson forests, so treat it as a place to look rather than a dependable supply.

5. Your own soul sand farm
Nether wart grows on soul sand, which Minecraft’s official “Block of the Week: Soul Sand” article describes as the only block the plant grows on. It is the one source that is fully renewable, because it only requires wart you have already collected.

Starting a renewable supply
A farm needs two things: some wart to plant and a supply of soul sand. The steps below assume you have already collected at least one wart from a fortress or bastion.

- Collect your starter wart from a fortress garden, and check fortress chests and bastion courtyards for extra.
- Place soul sand in the location you want to use as a farm. Soul sand is the only block that Nether wart grows on.
- Plant the wart on the soul sand. Each planted wart grows into more wart over time, so you will get a steady supply rather than relying on structures.
Quoted source on soul sand
Minecraft’s 2016 “Block of the Week: Soul Sand” article, written by Marsh Davies, states: “It’s also the only block on which Nether wart grows – a vital ingredient in many potions.” That is the clearest official statement that soul sand is required for planting.

The official sources do not give a current, edition-by-edition account of Nether wart generation in crimson forests, nor do they establish the chest odds for every version. Bastion courtyard wart rests on a secondary reference rather than an official description. Where a detail matters for your playthrough, check the current version notes for your edition before planning a route around a specific chance or location.
