Where the Rime Beetles are
The Rime Beetle is found in the Iceshard Cliffs. Game guides from PC Gamer and Shacknews name the same areas inside that region, though they do not agree on every one. Area 2 is the most-cited first stop.

Shacknews says Area 2 commonly has more than one beetle. That is a qualitative report from one guide, not a count you can rely on, so expect to check more than one area before you have the beetle you need.
Using the map to find a beetle
Shacknews reports that the map filter can identify Rime Beetles and let you set one as a waypoint. This is the faster route when it works:

- Travel to the Iceshard Cliffs.
- Open the map and use the filter to show Rime Beetles.
- Set a Rime Beetle as a waypoint and walk toward it.
Begin with Area 2, then move through Areas 7, 8, 11, and 13 if no beetle appears. Map markers are only as current as the game version you are playing, so if a marked area is empty, move on rather than waiting.
Spotting a beetle in the snow
Rime Beetles are hard to see. They roll a snowball as they move, so you may notice a moving snowball or the curved track it leaves behind before you see the beetle itself. Follow the track to find the beetle beneath or among the snow.

Capturing it with the Capture Net
The capture step for the quest uses the Capture Net. Equip it and aim at the beetle. Be careful with other tools: the Hook Slinger, or an ordinary interaction with the beetle, can gather sling ammunition or other materials instead. Those items do not count toward capturing the beetle for the quest, so if you finish the interaction and the quest does not progress, check that you used the net.
The quest and its reward
The capture is part of Samin’s endemic-life research questline, which is handled at the Windward Plains Base Camp. Gamer Guides says you must complete the preceding research quests and the story mission “New Ecosystems” before this continuation becomes available. After you capture the beetle, return to Samin.

Gamer Guides says Rime Beetles can appear at any time or in any season, and that they are more common during the season of Plenty. This is the guide’s general observation, not a measured spawn rate, so if you cannot find one during a visit, try again later rather than assuming the area is empty.
If you are stuck
- No beetle in Area 2: Move through Areas 7, 8, 11, and 13, using the map filter where you can.
- You see a snowball but no beetle: Follow the track it leaves. The beetle is under or among the snow along that path.
- The quest does not progress after you interact with the beetle: You probably used the Hook Slinger or a normal interaction, which collects sling ammunition or materials. Equip the Capture Net and try again.
- Samin’s quest will not start: Confirm you have completed the earlier research quests and “New Ecosystems.”
What is and is not established
The region, the areas, the capture method, and the quest details come from secondary game guides, mainly PC Gamer, Shacknews, and Gamer Guides. Their descriptions agree on the core steps. No official Capcom page we could confirm lists these exact locations, drop behavior, or quest rewards. The guides also do not provide a reliable count of beetles per area or per visit, and they do not say which game version their information applies to. If a map marker or reward differs from what is described here, the game’s current state is the one to trust.
No measured spawn-rate data exists for Rime Beetles that we could confirm, so there is no reliable percentage to quote.
