Shrine Guardian Seth first appears in a hidden area outside the Shellwood Shrine in Grand Gate. Reach it through a breakable wall in the lift shaft. After the fight, story progress moves Seth through several locations; his Guardian’s Memento is a separate reward earned by beating his scores in the Festival of the Flea games.
Spoiler warning: The route below reveals a boss encounter, later character appearances, and a reward condition.
Where is Seth in Silksong?
Find the first encounter in Grand Gate
- Go to the lift shaft near the Shellwood Shrine in Grand Gate.
- Look for a breakable wall in the shaft and open it.
- Follow the hidden passage to Shrine Guardian Seth and fight him.
This is Seth’s initial boss encounter, not one of his later NPC appearances. The Hollow Knight Wiki describes the hidden route and encounter in its Seth entry.
Where does Seth go after you beat him?
Seth’s later appearances depend on story progression, and the available guides summarize the trigger somewhat differently. The Hollow Knight Wiki lists defeating Nyleth and then obtaining either another Old Heart or the Everbloom as the condition that makes Seth a wandering NPC. PC Gamer summarizes the progression as claiming two Old Hearts. Treat these as guide descriptions of progression rather than a single confirmed, interchangeable trigger.

The wiki lists Seth’s later areas in this order:
- Greymoor
- Shellwood
- Grand Gate
- Fleatopia, at the Festival of the Flea
PC Gamer gives more specific landmarks for the earlier stops: Shakra’s former map location in Greymoor, toward Craw Lake; near Sister Splinter in Shellwood; and on the route before Grand Gate when approaching from Blasted Steps. It places his Festival appearance after completing Ecstasy of the End. Progression can cause him to skip intermediate stops; if he is not at the expected later location, check the prior locations. The wiki also notes that Grand Gate can be skipped after meeting Seth in Shellwood if Ecstasy of the End is complete and the Everbloom has been obtained.
These route details come from community-wiki and walkthrough accounts, not an official route guide. If a stop is empty, use the preceding location as a fallback rather than assuming the quest has failed.

How do I get the Guardian’s Memento?
At the Festival of the Flea, beat all of Seth’s scores in the flea games, then speak to him to receive the Guardian’s Memento. A tie does not count: your score must beat Seth’s. The reward is an in-game memento, not an item obtained from the initial boss fight. The Hollow Knight Wiki’s Guardian’s Memento entry describes the reward condition and its display use.
Set yourself up for easier score targets
PC Gamer advises keeping your own scores low when you first play the minigames, because those results set the scores Seth later asks you to beat. Once he is at the festival, replay each game and surpass his score; matching it is not enough.

Who was Seth Goldman?
The character honors Seth Goldman, a Hollow Knight fan who had Ewing sarcoma. The Hollow Knight Wiki reports that Goldman met Team Cherry through the Marty Lyons Foundation in early 2020. According to that account, Ari Gibson and William Pellen met him, invited him to create and name a Silksong boss, and he sent the design to the studio. The wiki says Goldman died later in 2020 and is remembered in the ending credits with an “Extra Special Thanks.”
The wiki also reproduces Team Cherry’s description of the character: “An eternal protector, waiting amidst tangled roots at the base of the Citadel. He guards a secret long forgotten and will attack any who stray too close.” It says the studio acknowledged developing the character together with Goldman and thanked the Marty Lyons Foundation and Seth. The description and acknowledgment are attributed to Team Cherry as reproduced by the wiki; the cited account does not name an individual speaker.
