The best early mods—called Modifiers in MIO: Memories In Orbit—depend on the challenge you want to prepare for. Start with Protective Overlay in Dwellings for an extra health layer, then look for damage, projectile protection, or energy recovery in Feral Undergrowth. These locations come from a community-maintained guide, not a developer-confirmed map, so check your current game version if a pickup is not where expected.
Which early modifiers should you prioritize?
Choose for the problem ahead and the Matrix slots you can spare. A modifier’s usefulness is not just its effect: its slot cost determines what else you can equip at the same time.

The guide’s description of these as early essentials is a recommendation, not an objective ranking. If a boss or route is punishing your health, favor Protective Overlay; if you are struggling to finish fights, Sharpened Hairpin may help. Defense Mechanism is the targeted choice against projectile damage, while Energy Leecher suits a build that can reliably land hits and make use of restored energy.
Where to find the modifiers
Protective Overlay in Dwellings
Search the left passage in Dwellings and open the round chest at its end. The community guide also lists Protective Overlay in Mel’s shop for 200 Nacre and 1 Old Core; check her current inventory in-game, since shop availability can depend on progression.

Three combat options in Feral Undergrowth
- Sharpened Hairpin: grapple to the platform above-left to reach the pickup.
- Defense Mechanism: look on a platform to the left.
- Energy Leecher: follow the left passage to its end and check the platform there.
These are guide-described landmarks rather than an official developer location map. If the route or pickup differs in your version, rely on the map and exploration available in your game.
Analyser from RAD
In Dwellings, approach a door from its left side to receive Analyser from RAD, according to the community modifier guide. Its 5-slot cost is low relative to the combat modifiers listed above, but its benefit is information rather than direct damage or defense.

How progression affects your route
The community walkthrough places the tutorial, first Network Gate, Hairpin Grapple, and Egis encounter in early Dwellings progression; defeating Egis opens the way toward Feral Undergrowth. That makes Protective Overlay the earlier pickup to seek, while the three Feral Undergrowth combat modifiers come later along the described route.
For navigation, Focus Entertainment recommends exploring before pushing forward, using Shii’s quest to unlock the map, and attuning at Overseer checkpoints so discoveries update on it. Can you buy modifiers instead?
After liberating Mel in the first area, her shop becomes available at the Nexus. Focus Entertainment says it sells modifiers and stat upgrades for Nacre and Old Cores. The community guide lists Protective Overlay for 200 Nacre plus 1 Old Core, and Maintenance Hack for 150 Nacre; it describes Maintenance Hack as allowing free health replenishment at Nacre basins. Confirm availability and prices in your own shop before planning around a purchase.
Buying can save a detour when an item is available and you have the required currency, but it competes with other upgrades for resources. Since Liquid Nacre is lost on death, bank it at a station before a risky exploration trip.

How Matrix slots shape an early build
Focus Entertainment says the game includes more than 40 modifiers, but only a limited number can be equipped at once. The publisher also describes extending modifier capacity and experimenting with builds. The community guide says you can change modifiers at Network Gates and that slot-expanding modifiers also have costs. Treat a Network Gate as a place to adapt your setup to the next section or boss, not as a reason to collect effects you cannot equip together.
