The Gauley Mine ID card is not lying around inside the mine. It is Crane’s cache keycard, which you receive from Crane during the quest The Elusive Crane. The mine’s supply cage is locked with a keypad, and the code (071990) only gets you into the cage. The card itself is the item that opens the reader door behind it.

Before you start: the quest requirement

The Elusive Crane is part of the Wastelanders quest chain and follows Strength in Numbers. If you have not completed Strength in Numbers, Crane’s keycard will not be available to you, so finish that quest first.

Step-by-step route to the card reader

  1. Complete the Crane quest. Progress through Strength in Numbers and then start The Elusive Crane. Crane carries both the map and the keycard. You can kill him or spare him; either way, loot the items from him to get the card.
  2. Travel to Gauley Mine. The mine is in the Forest region of Appalachia, southeast of Landview Lighthouse.
  3. Follow the main mine route to the machine room. The supply cage there has a keypad lock. The code is 071990. The note that gives this code is pinned to a bulletin board below the stairs, opposite the cage.
  4. Enter the cage and look through the hole in its wall. The hole leads through to a locked door fitted with a card reader.
  5. Use Crane’s cache keycard on the reader. This is the step that actually opens the door. Entering the code gets you into the cage; it does not open the reader door.

Why the code and the card are separate requirements

Gauley Mine uses two barriers in sequence, and each needs its own item:

  • The cage code (071990) is a note-based keypad code. It is publicly documented and gives you access to the supply cage only.
  • Crane’s cache keycard is a quest reward. It is needed for the card reader behind the cage wall and cannot be replaced by the code.

If you are stuck at the reader door, the usual cause is that you have not yet taken the keycard from Crane. Going back to the cage code will not solve that.

Other reader: RobCo Auto-Cache 001

The key listing for the card also identifies RobCo Auto-Cache 001 as another reader it works with. This is useful to know if you want to use the card elsewhere, but the Gauley Mine door is the one this route is built around.

What is and is not established

The steps above come from the Fallout Wiki community reference for Fallout 76 and its quest and item pages. They describe the quest and item mechanics as documented there. I have not confirmed them against an official Bethesda walkthrough, and the route could change if a future update alters the Crane quest, the cage code, or the reader door. If a step does not match what you see in game, check the Wiki page for the current version of the quest before assuming the item is missing.

Some search results also reported player trouble with this route. Those reports were not used to establish a general fix, so the instructions above describe the documented path only.

No physical product, controller, or outside tool is required to complete this route. The card is a quest item, so it can only be obtained through the game’s quest flow.
