The contamination source for the Source of the Contamination objective is a barrel in a polluted pool on the north side of the Water Treatment Building on Dam Battlegrounds, outside the building and facing the Swamp.
Where the objective takes you
The objective is set on Dam Battlegrounds. The quest’s first step asks you to reach the Water Treatment Building, and the target is not inside it. Go around to the building’s north side, the part facing the Swamp, and look for the Flood Spill Intake: a concrete-walled pool of polluted water outside the structure.
Step-by-step
- Load into Dam Battlegrounds and head for the Water Treatment Building.
- Approach from the north, swamp-facing exterior. One walkthrough describes this side as the quieter approach.
- Find the concrete-walled intake holding polluted water. This is an outdoor pool, not an interior room to search.
- Step down into the water and interact with the barrel that sits in it. This barrel is the suspicious object the quest asks you to investigate.
- Do not plan an item extraction for this step. The guide we reviewed says you only need to visit and interact; there is no quest item to turn in and no required extraction.
How the objective is worded
PC Gamer’s quest list gives the objective steps as “Reach the Water Treatment Building in Dam Battlegrounds,” “Search for the Flood Spill Intake near the Swamp,” and “Investigate any suspicious objects.” The quest is indexed in guides as Source of the Contamination, which is the name to look for in your quest log if the headline phrasing does not match what you see.
Where this fits in the water storyline
The contaminated-water storyline begins with Water Troubles and continues with Source of the Contamination. Water Troubles is a separate step: PC Gamer describes it as locating the Flood Access Tunnel beneath Red Lake Balcony and finding the intake in the District’s Water Supply. Completing Water Troubles does not replace the barrel check described above.
