The Wowhead listings confirm that Tanaris is one of several zones where the fish appears. They do not show a single best spot or a guaranteed catch rate, so treat the lists below as a map of where it is reported, not a ranking of where it is most likely to drop.
Where Raw Spotted Yellowtail appears in retail
The current retail item page on Wowhead lists fishing locations for Raw Spotted Yellowtail, with a count of reports for each zone. Those counts are the number of catches reported on the page for each location. They are not controlled measurements of the chance to catch the fish per cast, so they should not be read as drop rates.

Where it appears in Classic
The Classic item page on Wowhead has its own location list, so do not assume retail and Classic match. In Classic, the fish is listed in Azshara, Stranglethorn Vale, Dustwallow Marsh, Feralas, Tanaris (Steamwheedle Beach), The Hinterlands, Swamp of Sorrows, Desolace, and Arathi Highlands. Thousand Needles, which appears on the retail list, is not on the Classic list.

The Classic page also includes one user-contributed sample: 120 Raw Spotted Yellowtail from 292 casts at Steamwheedle Beach, or 41.1% of that player’s casts. The sample has no stated date, comes from one player’s session, and is not an official drop rate. Your own results may be higher or lower.

- Steamwheedle Port is the name used on the current retail listing. One commenter there describes fishing from the dock. That is one player’s experience, and it does not show that the dock is faster than other spots in the zone.
- Steamwheedle Beach is the name used on the Classic listing, and it is the location behind the 41.1% sample above.
Another retail comment describes a Thousand Needles spot based on a short sample. Neither comment establishes that its location is objectively the fastest option, so use these as starting points rather than proven targets.
Why the reports cannot rank zones
It is tempting to read the retail counts as a ranking, with Tanaris first at 232 reports and Dustwallow Marsh last at 69. That comparison is not reliable. Report counts depend on how many players fished each zone and for how long, and they say nothing about the number of casts behind each catch. A zone with more reports may simply be more popular. The same caution applies to player comments: each one reflects a different sample size, fishing skill, game version, and set of conditions.

When you compare zones yourself, check them in this order:
- Game version. Confirm whether you are on retail or Classic, then use the matching list.
- Location name. Choose a subzone you can find easily, such as Steamwheedle Port or Steamwheedle Beach in Tanaris.
- Evidence quality. Give more weight to a stated sample size with a cast count than to a single anecdote or a raw report total.
Practical steps
- Open the Raw Spotted Yellowtail item page on Wowhead for your version and read the full location section, since the summary does not list every zone.
- Start in Tanaris, which is listed in both versions.
- Keep your own cast count for a session so you can compare your results against the published samples, which are small and undated.
- If a spot is not producing fish after a reasonable number of casts, try another listed zone instead of assuming it is the wrong item source.
Wowhead’s listings are community-maintained reference pages, not official Blizzard location guides. The zone lists may change with patches, so recheck them when you start a new session or after a major update.
