How Somber Smithing Stone upgrades work
Special and unique armaments use one Somber Smithing Stone per upgrade step. Stones 1 through 9 take a weapon to +9. The final +10 upgrade requires one Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone instead.
The five Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearings cover the numbered stones, not the final upgrade material. If you are looking for a dependable way to buy stones repeatedly, the bearings are the main route.
Where to get the five Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearings
Give each bearing to the Twin Maiden Husks at Roundtable Hold to add its tiers to their shop. Once unlocked, those numbered stones can be bought in unlimited quantities.

Where can I buy Somber Smithing Stones early?
Smithing Master Iji in Liurnia
Iji sells Somber Smithing Stones 1 and 2 in unlimited quantities. He also sells three each of stones 3 and 4, so that stock is limited. He is a useful early stop for upgrading without first reaching a bell-bearing location.

Twin Maiden Husks at Roundtable Hold
After you turn in the relevant bell bearing, the Twin Maiden Husks sell its numbered tiers in unlimited quantities. The first four bearings unlock tiers 1–8 in pairs; the fifth is the one that unlocks tier 9.
Are there individual Somber Smithing Stone pickups?
Yes. Stones are also scattered through the world, and these pickups can help you upgrade before unlocking shop access. Examples include tiers 1–4 in Stormveil Castle, Liurnia, and Caelid; tier 5 on the bridge after the Mimic Tear in Nokron; tier 6 from the Fallingstar Beast in Sellia Crystal Tunnel and in other late Liurnia, Caelid, and Capital locations; and tiers 7–9 in areas including Volcano Manor, the Mountaintops, Lake of Rot, and Crumbling Farum Azula.

The final material is separate from the numbered stones and is not made available for unlimited purchase by the five bell bearings. GamesRadar+ lists eight base-game locations or rewards: two in Crumbling Farum Azula, one in Ashen Capital, one in Consecrated Snowfield, one in Mohgwyn Palace, two in Miquella’s Haligtree, and one as the Latenna quest reward at Apostate Derelict. These are alternative sources for a finite final-upgrade stone; choose one that fits your progress and quest choices.

Which route should you take?
- For early upgrades: Buy tiers 1 and 2 from Iji, and use his limited stock of tiers 3 and 4 if needed.
- For repeatable purchases: Collect the five bell bearings as you reach their locations and turn them in at Roundtable Hold.
- For stones before shop access: Pick up scattered stones while exploring; these finds are finite.
- For a +10 weapon: Plan separately for one Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone, since the numbered-tier shop unlocks do not cover it.
