Hytale has three hide tiers—Light, Medium, and Heavy—and the clearest currently verified animal sources are Bison, Boar, Cow, Horse, and Warthog for Medium Hide. An exhaustive, current creature list for all three tiers is not established by the official sources cited here. This guide reflects the official Update 2 notes checked October 8, 2026; confirm drops in your current game version because Early Access updates can change them.
Which animals drop each Hytale Hide?
Hytale’s official Update 2 notes say that five animals were changed to drop Medium Hide instead of Light Hide. They are the most firmly verified animal sources in the available official notes:
- Bison — Medium Hide
- Boar — Medium Hide
- Cow — Medium Hide
- Horse — Medium Hide
- Warthog — Medium Hide
These assignments are documented in the Hytale Patch Notes – Update 2, published January 24, 2026. The notes identify a change from Light to Medium; do not count these five as verified Light Hide sources based on older guides.
Light Hide
The official Update 2 change identifies animals that stopped dropping Light Hide, but does not list all creatures that still drop it. A complete current Light Hide source list cannot be confirmed from the official notes cited here.

Medium Hide
The five animals above are the verified examples. The notes do not establish that they are the only Medium Hide sources.
Heavy Hide
Heavy Hide is a confirmed material tier, but the official sources cited here do not identify its current creature sources. Avoid assuming that size or animal type predicts a Heavy Hide drop.

What happens to Hides after you collect them?
Light, Medium, and Heavy Hide are all processed into Leather, according to the Hytale Patch Notes – Update 1, published January 17, 2026. A dated PC Gamer guide names the Tanning Rack as the processing station: How to get leather in Hytale. Check the station and recipe in your current build before relying on exact steps or timings. Update 1 reduced hide-processing time by 10 seconds; that is a patch-note change, not a statement of the current processing duration.
Can you find Hide or Leather in chests?
PC Gamer’s January 14, 2026 guide suggests that exploration structure chests may contain Leather. Treat that as a chance to find processed Leather, not a confirmed source of raw Hide or a dependable farming route. The official sources cited here do not establish chest contents as a reliable way to obtain hides.

Why “all Hides” needs a version check
Hide drops have changed: Update 2 moved Bison, Boar, Cow, Horse, and Warthog from Light Hide to Medium Hide. Hytale’s January 13, 2026 launch announcement described the game as Early Access and incomplete, with bugs expected (Hytale is finally here!). For a complete list, use patch notes for your installed version and verify drops in-game rather than relying on pre-Update 2 animal lists.
Hytale Docs describes configurable drop-list assets, but that documentation is not a complete public listing of live hide drops by creature: Drops | Hytale Docs (Release 0.6.8 shown in the cited result). It therefore cannot fill in the unconfirmed Light and Heavy Hide sources.
