There’s no single required order for reading Marvel Comics. Choose a character, team, or kind of story you like, then start with the first issue of a run or a clearly bounded story arc. If you want a universe-wide crossover, you can begin there too—but expect a wider cast and more connections to other titles.
Choose the kind of starting point you want
Marvel’s own reading guides offer several entry points rather than one mandatory chronology. The best fit depends on how much continuity you want, how long you want to read, and what kind of story sounds appealing.

| Route | What you get | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Solo run | One character or title to follow, often beginning at a new series’ first issue. | Ultimate Spider-Man (2000) #1; Hawkeye (2012) #1; Ms. Marvel (2014) #1; Thor: God of Thunder (2012) #1; Black Panther (2016) #1. Marvel’s beginner guide lists these as possible starts. |
| Team run | A group dynamic, with a team’s particular cast and era as the focus. | Guardians of the Galaxy (2008) #1; Fantastic Four (2018) #1 or (2022) #1. See Marvel’s Fantastic Four guide and Guardians guide. |
| Bounded story | A more contained commitment than following a long publication history. | Runaways (2003) #1; Doctor Strange & Doctor Doom: Triumph and Torment (1989); Planet Hulk, beginning in Hulk #92; or Daredevil: Born Again, beginning in Daredevil #226. Marvel includes these in its self-contained stories guide. |
| Crossover event | A broad Marvel-universe conflict that may draw on other characters and titles. | Civil War (2006) #1; Infinity Gauntlet (1991) #1; Secret Wars (1984) #1 or (2015) #1; Secret Invasion (2008) #1. Marvel lists these in its events and modern classics guide. |
A run’s #1 is a straightforward place to meet a character or team in a particular era. An event’s #1 is also a beginning, but it does not necessarily provide the same focused introduction: the story may assume familiarity with a larger cast or lead into related titles. The guides list event options, not a complete prerequisite order.

Spider-Man
For a fresh origin retelling, Marvel points to Ultimate Spider-Man (2000) #1. If you want Peter Parker’s classic publication-era beginning, try Amazing Spider-Man (1963) #1. You can also choose a shorter landmark story instead of starting at the beginning: Marvel identifies “If This Be My Destiny” in Amazing Spider-Man #31–33, “The Night Gwen Stacy Died” in #121–122, and Kraven’s Last Hunt as notable options in its Spider-Man reading guide.

Hawkeye
Hawkeye (2012) #1, by Matt Fraction and David Aja, is a Marvel-recommended entry point centered on Clint Barton and Kate Bishop. Pick it if you want a character-focused series rather than a large crossover.
Ms. Marvel
Ms. Marvel (2014) #1 starts Kamala Khan’s series and is another of Marvel’s suggested first issues. It’s a direct route into this character’s own story.
Rank #2

Fantastic Four
Marvel highlights Fantastic Four (2018) #1 and Fantastic Four (2022) #1 as openings for different eras. Choose the run whose period and direction interest you; neither choice makes a universal reading order necessary.

Guardians of the Galaxy
Marvel identifies Guardians of the Galaxy (2008) #1 as a modern team starting point. Its guide also lists series beginnings in 2013, 2015, 2017, and 2020. Because the team’s cast and era vary, choose the opening that appeals to you rather than treating every run as a required sequence.

Should you start with a famous crossover?
You can, but it’s a different experience from starting with a solo run. Marvel’s event guide includes Civil War, Infinity Gauntlet, both the 1984 and 2015 Secret Wars, and Secret Invasion. These stories operate on a broader scale, and you may encounter characters whose solo histories you haven’t read.
If a crossover leaves you curious about a character, use that interest to branch into the character’s own series. You do not need to read every tie-in or reconstruct all of Marvel continuity before starting. The listed event guide does not establish a complete prerequisite sequence, so treat any additional reading as optional unless a particular edition or series explicitly directs you to it.

Pick a format that suits how you read
You can read individual issues, collect a bounded story in print, or use a digital service. For print, check the exact edition’s contents before buying: a collected volume’s title alone does not establish which issues or stories it includes, and current availability varies. Marvel presents Marvel Unlimited as a digital reading service with curated lists, but its catalog count and terms can change; check its official page for current availability and details.

A simple way to decide
- Choose your scope: one character, a team, a contained story, or a universe-wide event.
- Choose your commitment: a first issue for an ongoing run, a bounded arc for a shorter project, or an event if you want a broader cast.
- Choose your subject and tone: Spider-Man for a character-centered starting point, Guardians for cosmic team adventures, or another character or team that already interests you.
- Start with the named issue or story: you can follow related titles later if the story gives you a reason to.
