Start with Dragon Ball, continue with either Dragon Ball Z or Dragon Ball Z Kai, and then watch Dragon Ball Super. That sequence introduces Goku’s childhood, follows the story through the Saiyan, Frieza, Cell and Majin Buu conflicts, and then moves into the post-Buu era. The older Z movies work best as optional side stories watched in release order, rather than inserted into a supposedly exact television timeline.
The short answer: the best first-watch order
For most new viewers, use this order:
- Dragon Ball — Goku’s original childhood adventure and the foundation for the characters, techniques and Dragon Balls.
- Dragon Ball Z or Dragon Ball Z Kai — the larger-scale sequel involving Goku’s son Gohan and increasingly dangerous enemies.
- Dragon Ball Super — the post-Majin Buu continuation, with new forms, universes and tournaments.
You can begin with Dragon Ball Z if that is the only series available to you, but you will enter a story that assumes you already know Goku and several long-standing relationships. Starting with the original Dragon Ball gives those later developments their intended context.

Dragon Ball GT and Dragon Ball DAIMA are separate viewing choices rather than required steps between Z and Super. Toei Animation’s catalog lists each as its own series, with different release periods and episode totals.
What each Dragon Ball series contributes
Toei’s catalog provides the following official series counts and dates. These are catalog figures, not independently measured running times.

| Series | Toei catalog count | Catalog year | What it covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dragon Ball | 153 episodes | 1986 | Goku’s childhood, his early searches for the Dragon Balls, martial-arts training and first major battles. |
| Dragon Ball Z | 291 episodes | 1989 | The older Goku era, Gohan’s development and the principal Z-era threats. |
| Dragon Ball GT | 64 episodes | 1996 | A separate sequel series listed independently by Toei. |
| Dragon Ball Z Kai | 98 episodes | 2009 | A shorter Z-era television version; Toei lists it separately from the 291-episode original. |
| Dragon Ball Super | 131 episodes | 2015 | The continuation set after the threat of Majin Buu has passed. |
| Dragon Ball DAIMA | 20 episodes | 2024 | A later standalone entry in the franchise catalog. |
| Kai: The Final Chapters | 69 episodes (international version); 61 (Japanese version) | Cataloged separately | The continuation of the Kai presentation for its later material. |
The catalog establishes release years and episode totals, but it does not turn those numbers into a promise about total hours. Opening credits, recaps, episode runtimes and regional edits can all affect how long a complete watch takes.
Should you watch Dragon Ball before Dragon Ball Z?
Yes, if you want the character-driven version of the story. The original series shows Goku before he becomes the adult defender seen in Z. You meet friends and rivals when their relationships are still being formed, see how the martial-arts world works, and learn why the Dragon Balls matter before the franchise expands into alien origins and planet-sized threats.
Starting with Z is acceptable for a faster entry into the most famous era. The opening of Z introduces a new family situation and quickly establishes a larger conflict, so a newcomer can follow the immediate plot. The trade-off is that earlier friendships, jokes and victories are treated as history rather than shown to you.
- Choose the full order if you value character history, world-building and the emotional weight of later reunions.
- Choose Z first if you are joining friends for a Z-focused watch and want to reach that era immediately.
- Return to Dragon Ball later if you start with Z; it works as a prequel-style experience even when viewed afterward.
Dragon Ball Z or Dragon Ball Z Kai?
Both are Z-era routes. Toei lists the original Dragon Ball Z at 291 episodes and Dragon Ball Z Kai at 98. That makes Kai the practical choice when your priority is a shorter commitment, while the original is the longer version of the television run.
| Question | Dragon Ball Z | Dragon Ball Z Kai |
|---|---|---|
| Official catalog count | 291 episodes | 98 episodes |
| Catalog year | 1989 | 2009 |
| Best for | Viewers who want the complete original television presentation and its longer pacing. | Viewers who want the Z story in a substantially shorter cataloged episode run. |
| What the supplied catalog establishes | The series identity, date and count. | The separate series identity, date and count. |
| What it does not establish | It does not provide a precise runtime comparison with Kai. | It does not quantify every edit or guarantee a particular viewer’s quality preference. |
Do not choose Kai solely because someone promises a specific number of hours saved or a particular amount of filler removed; those details are not established by the catalog information available here. Choose based on whether you want the 291-episode original or the 98-episode Kai listing.
Kai: The Final Chapters is cataloged separately. Toei lists 69 episodes for its international version and 61 for its Japanese version, so check which edition your service or release is presenting before assuming the count.

The recommended main-story order
1. Dragon Ball
Watch all 153 episodes if you want the complete beginning. This is where Goku’s early quest, training and friendships are established. It also makes later references to his childhood adventures meaningful instead of treating them as unexplained backstory.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →2. Dragon Ball Z or Dragon Ball Z Kai
Pick one television route rather than watching both consecutively as if they were separate sequels. They occupy the same broad Z-era position in a first-watch plan. If you finish the original and then sample Kai, treat Kai as an alternate presentation, not a new continuation.
3. Dragon Ball Super
Toei describes Super as beginning after the threat of Majin Buu has passed. Watch it after your chosen Z route so its new status quo and returning characters land in context.
4. Decide whether to add GT or DAIMA
Toei’s catalog lists GT and DAIMA separately from the core path above. They are not required preparation for Super. Add them according to your interest in additional franchise stories, release context or a completionist watch, not because the main order requires them.
Where the Dragon Ball Z movies fit
The older Z movies are best treated as optional side stories. The catalog gives their titles and release dates, while a Crunchyroll viewing guide separates movie events from its chronological main-story guide. That distinction matters: trying to force every older film between specific television episodes can create contradictions and unnecessary stop-start viewing.
For a first watch, complete your chosen television route first, then use the films as a separate marathon. If you prefer to watch a movie alongside the series, use its release year only as a rough historical marker; do not assume that every event has a clean place in the television continuity.

Older Z films in release order
English-language releases sometimes use different translated titles. The list below follows the titles used in Toei’s catalog; use the title printed on the version you are watching when a local release differs.
| Release year | Catalog title |
|---|---|
| 1989 | Get Back My Gohan |
| 1990 | The Strongest Guy in the World |
| 1990 | Super Battle in the World |
| 1991 | Super Saiyan, Son Goku |
| 1991 | The Strongest Rivals |
| 1992 | Fight! 10 Billion Power Warriors |
| 1992 | Super Battle of Three Super Saiyans |
| 1993 | The Burning Battles |
| 1993 | Super Guy in the Galaxy |
| 1994 | Dangerous Rivals |
| 1994 | Attack! Super Warriors |
| 1995 | Revival Fusion |
| 1995 | Explosion of Dragon Punch |
| 2013 | Battle of Gods |
| 2015 | Resurrection ‘F’ |
The first 13 entries are the older Z-era run. Battle of Gods and Resurrection ‘F’ are later productions associated with the transition into the Super era. Watching the television series first prevents you from mistaking a movie’s compressed, self-contained setup for the complete series chronology.
Dragon Ball Super films
Toei lists these films separately under Dragon Ball Super:
| Release year | Film | How to use it in a first watch |
|---|---|---|
| 2018 | Dragon Ball Super: Broly | Watch after reaching the Super era, as an optional film experience. |
| 2022 | Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero | Watch after entering the Super era; keep it separate from the older Z-film marathon. |
The catalog’s separate listing identifies release years and franchise grouping. It does not require a beginner to interrupt the television run at a precise episode. For a clean first pass, finish the main series route, then watch the modern Super films.
Three practical viewing paths
The story-first path
Dragon Ball → Dragon Ball Z or Kai → Dragon Ball Super. This is the most coherent path for a new viewer. It follows the broad progression described by Toei: Goku’s early quest, the Z-era adventures involving Gohan and new threats, and the post-Buu continuation.
The shorter Z-era path
Dragon Ball → Dragon Ball Z Kai → Dragon Ball Super. This keeps the original-series foundation while selecting Toei’s 98-episode Kai listing instead of the 291-episode original Z listing. It is the sensible choice when the full original run is too large for your schedule.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
The franchise-completion path
Dragon Ball → Dragon Ball Z → the older films in release order → Dragon Ball Super → the Super films → GT and DAIMA as separate entries. This route is for viewers who want release history and every cataloged animated branch. It is not the fastest way to understand the central story.

Watch the films in release order, beginning with Get Back My Gohan (1989) and ending with Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero (2022). This is a valid entertainment marathon, but it is not a substitute for the television narrative. The films assume recognizable characters and often use self-contained versions of the world.

Streaming rights, subtitles, dubs and episode availability change by territory and date. Toei’s March 2022 announcement said:
“March 15th marked the launch date of all episodes for Toei Animation’s ‘Dragon Ball,’ ‘Dragon Ball Z’ and ‘Dragon Ball GT’ on the Crunchyroll streaming service in the U.S., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.”
That announcement is a historical statement covering those four territories in 2022. It is not proof that the same catalog, language tracks or subscription terms are available in every country today. Before starting, search your local service for the exact title—Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball Z Kai, Dragon Ball Super or a particular film—and verify the available audio and subtitle languages.
- Check the country selected on your account, not a foreign catalog page.
- Confirm whether the listing includes the complete season or only selected episodes.
- Verify whether the service offers the original Z, Kai, or both; they are separate catalog entries.
- Check language options before committing to a long series.
- Recheck individual films separately, because movie rights can differ from series rights.
A physical Dragon Ball Z DVD collection can also be useful when you want a stable library, but no particular edition, completeness, region coding or current retail listing is established here. Confirm the exact release contents before buying.

Common mistakes to avoid
Starting with a random movie
A film can introduce familiar characters without explaining their history. Begin with the series path unless you are deliberately watching a side-story marathon.
Watching both Z and Kai as consecutive seasons
The two are alternative Z-era routes for a first watch. Pick one, then move to Super; only return to the other if you want to compare presentations.
Assuming every film has an exact television slot
The catalog supplies release dates, while the chronological guide separates movie events from the main story. Release order is therefore the transparent method for a movie run.

Assuming a 2022 streaming announcement is current
Rights and language tracks can change. Treat the announced four-territory launch as historical context and verify the local catalog immediately before watching.
Using episode counts as a runtime promise
Toei’s counts identify the size of each cataloged series. They do not establish a guaranteed number of viewing hours or a precise amount of material removed between Z and Kai.
A simple decision checklist
- New to the franchise? Start with Dragon Ball.
- Want the original long-form Z experience? Choose the 291-episode Dragon Ball Z listing.
- Need a shorter Z route? Choose the 98-episode Dragon Ball Z Kai listing.
- Finished your Z choice? Continue with the 131-episode Dragon Ball Super listing.
- Interested in films? Watch older Z movies separately in release order, then add the two Super films.
- Unsure about a service? Check your country, date, title and language options immediately before viewing.
Bottom line
For the clearest first experience, watch Dragon Ball, choose either Dragon Ball Z or Dragon Ball Z Kai, and then move to Dragon Ball Super. Keep the older Z movies—and later Super films—in a separate release-order marathon. Add GT or DAIMA afterward if you want additional cataloged series, not because either is required to understand that core path.
