For the least confusing first watch, begin with Stargate (1994), then watch Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, and Stargate Universe. Watch The Ark of Truth after the SG-1 finale and before the Atlantis season-three finale; watch Continuum after The Ark of Truth. If you want the timeline to line up as closely as possible, use GateWorld’s optimized order and interleave the overlapping SG-1 and Atlantis episodes.
The best starting point for a new viewer
Start with the 1994 film Stargate. It introduces the ring-shaped portal, the idea of traveling between planets, and the basic mythology that the television franchise expands. Stargate SG-1 follows the film’s events about a year later, so the movie gives useful context without requiring any prior knowledge.

After the film, make Stargate SG-1 your main commitment. It is the ten-season center of the live-action franchise. From there, move into its five-season spin-off, Stargate Atlantis, and finish the original live-action run with the two-season Stargate Universe.

Simple first-watch order
- Stargate (1994)
- Stargate SG-1 — all ten seasons
- Stargate: The Ark of Truth — after the SG-1 series finale
- Stargate: Continuum — after The Ark of Truth
- Stargate Atlantis — five seasons
- Stargate Universe — two seasons
This is a beginner-friendly simplification. The two SG-1 films can be watched immediately after the series finale before you begin Atlantis; that keeps the central SG-1 story together while still placing The Ark of Truth before the Atlantis season-three finale. If you prefer to follow the fictional timeline more precisely, use the continuity route below.
Why this order is easy to live with
The route has only one major handoff at a time: the film establishes the premise, SG-1 develops it over ten seasons, the two films finish that show’s major threads, Atlantis widens the setting, and Universe offers a later perspective. You do not need to keep two episode lists open or pause a season to find a crossover point. That makes it a practical choice for anyone discovering the franchise through a modern streaming service or a disc set.
It also gives you natural stopping points. The 1994 movie is a short introduction to the concept; SG-1 is the large central commitment; and each spin-off can be evaluated after you have seen the foundation. If ten seasons feel daunting, begin with the film and decide whether the first run of SG-1 is working for you before planning the rest.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhy the 1994 film comes first
Roland Emmerich directed the original film and co-wrote it with Dean Devlin. Its story establishes the Stargate itself and the premise of an Earth expedition reaching other worlds through the device.
The television franchise is not a remake that starts from an unrelated premise. SG-1 treats the movie as the starting point and picks up roughly one year later. You can understand the series without remembering every film detail, but watching the movie first makes the terminology, portal technology, and initial mission easier to follow.
That recommendation answers the common question, “Do I need to watch the movie before SG-1?” You can technically begin the series without it, but the film is the cleanest introduction and removes avoidable confusion about where the central idea came from.
What each Stargate entry is
| Entry | Format and run | How it fits a first watch |
|---|---|---|
| Stargate | 1994 feature film | Start here; it establishes the premise and portal. |
| Stargate SG-1 | Ten-season television series, 1997–2007 | The central live-action series, continuing the film’s story about a year later. |
| Stargate Atlantis | Five-season television spin-off, 2004–2009 | Follow-up series connected to SG-1; it works after you know the parent show. |
| Stargate Universe | Two-season television series, 2009–2011 | Save for last among the original live-action shows. |
| Stargate: The Ark of Truth | 2008 direct-to-video film | Continues the SG-1 story after its finale and before the Atlantis season-three finale. |
| Stargate: Continuum | 2008 direct-to-video film | Another direct continuation of SG-1; place it after The Ark of Truth for the recommended route. |
| Stargate Origins | 2018 web series | Optional prequel set in 1939, centered on a young Catherine Langford. |
| Stargate Infinity | Animated series, 2002–2003; one season | Optional animated extra, not needed for the beginner route. |
The season counts above come from Amazon MGM’s franchise overview: ten seasons for SG-1, five for Atlantis, and two for Universe. Those figures help set expectations, but they are not a quality ranking. No reliable comparative audience or ratings statistic is needed to decide where a beginner should start.

The Ark of Truth
The Ark of Truth resolves the major SG-1 storyline after the television finale. Amazon MGM’s franchise overview places it after the SG-1 series finale and before the Atlantis third-season finale. Watching it immediately after the final SG-1 episode is therefore the least disruptive choice.
Its placement does not mean you must interrupt an Atlantis season at a particular episode on a simple first watch. If you watch Atlantis straight through after the films, you have still preserved the important relationship: the movie follows the SG-1 ending and occurs before the third-season finale of the spin-off.

Continuum
Continuum is a separate direct-to-video SG-1 film built around Ba’al changing history. For a straightforward first watch, put it after The Ark of Truth. The film is easier to appreciate once you have completed the television series and seen the first concluding movie.
Do not treat the two movies as substitutes for the series finale. They are follow-up productions, so watching them before completing SG-1 removes the context they are designed to build on.

Simple route versus continuity-focused route
| Route | Order | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Simple first watch | 1994 film → all of SG-1 → The Ark of Truth → Continuum → Atlantis → Universe | New viewers who want a clean progression and fewer switches. |
| Continuity-focused | Use GateWorld’s optimized guide to interleave the overlapping portions of SG-1 and Atlantis, keeping connected multi-part stories together. | Viewers who want the broadcast-era timeline to line up more closely. |
| Completionist | Follow either route, then add Origins and Infinity as optional extras. | Viewers who want to sample every major screen production. |
GateWorld’s optimized guide, published September 13, 2024, prioritizes original broadcast order while grouping connected stories. It is a specialist recommendation, not an officially mandated sequence. The studio has not prescribed one universal order that every viewer must follow.
How the interleaved order works
Atlantis overlaps the later years of SG-1. In the continuity route, you alternate blocks of episodes from the two shows instead of watching every SG-1 season and then starting Atlantis. The purpose is to preserve when cross-series events occurred relative to one another.
- Finish the 1994 film before beginning either television series.
- Use GateWorld’s episode-by-episode optimized list once you reach the overlapping period.
- Watch each connected two-part or multi-part story as a unit; do not split its episodes across unrelated entries.
- Insert The Ark of Truth after the SG-1 finale and before the Atlantis season-three finale.
- Place Continuum after The Ark of Truth in the specialist sequence.
- Continue with the remaining Atlantis material, then watch Universe.
The interleaving adds logistical work without changing the basic entry point. Choose it if continuity details are part of the fun; otherwise, the simple route is less likely to interrupt your momentum.
Which route should you choose?
Choose the simple route if you are asking where to start, have never seen the franchise, or prefer finishing one cast and storyline before changing shows. Choose GateWorld’s optimized order if you enjoy tracking broadcast chronology, want connected episodes to sit beside one another, or are rewatching and want a more precise timeline.
Neither choice locks you out of the other. A first-time viewer can use the simple route and later revisit the overlapping SG-1 and Atlantis material in GateWorld’s order. Conversely, someone who begins with the interleaved list can stop switching whenever it becomes distracting and finish a series block before continuing.
Should you watch the spin-offs?
Stargate Atlantis
Atlantis is a five-season spin-off created by Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper. It expands the franchise into a different setting and ensemble while retaining important links to SG-1. Watching SG-1 first lets you recognize those connections and understand why certain developments matter.
It is not necessary to master the interleaved order before starting Atlantis. The show can follow all of SG-1 in a beginner marathon, or you can place episodes according to GateWorld’s specialist guide if timeline precision matters to you.
Stargate Universe
Universe is a separate two-season series created by Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper about a team aboard the Ancient ship Destiny. It is best saved for the end of the original live-action run. Starting there exposes you to established concepts without the foundation that earlier shows provide.
Saving it for last also keeps the viewing plan simple: there is no need to decide where it belongs among the overlapping SG-1 and Atlantis episodes. Complete the earlier route, then treat Universe as the final major live-action stop.
Are Origins and Infinity required?
No. Treat both as optional extras rather than prerequisites.
- Stargate Origins: a 2018 web prequel set in 1939 about a young Catherine Langford.
- Stargate Infinity: an animated series that ran for one season in 2002–2003.
The franchise overviews do not establish a comprehensive official canon ruling that settles every question about these productions. If you watch them, approach them as additional interpretations and historical curiosities after the main live-action route, not as homework required to understand SG-1, Atlantis, or Universe.
They are also poor substitutes for the recommended opening. Origins is a prequel web series rather than the 1994 film that launched the television premise, while Infinity is an animated single-season entry. Save both for the completionist stage.
Where to watch Stargate
Streaming rights vary by country and change over time. GateWorld’s January 2026 streaming guide is specifically for viewers in the United States, while Amazon MGM’s franchise page links to Prime Video for named entries. A link on a studio page does not guarantee that a title is included with a subscription, available in every territory, or still present when you search.
Before starting, search each title on the services available in your country and check which access type is shown:
- Included: available under your existing subscription.
- Rental: a separate, time-limited payment.
- Purchase: a digital ownership option.
- Unavailable: not currently offered in that service or territory.
Check the films separately from the series. A service may carry SG-1 but not The Ark of Truth or Continuum, and regional catalogs can differ even when the service name is the same. Recheck availability when you reach the next entry rather than assuming the entire franchise is in one catalog.
Do not assume that a search result means the title is included. A listing can lead to a rental or purchase page, and a title can disappear after you have started a long series. Recording whether each item is included, rented, purchased, or unavailable lets you plan the least expensive legal route without relying on an old catalog snapshot.

Owning the series on disc
Physical editions can be useful because the franchise is spread across long series and separate films. A complete-series SG-1 DVD set, Blu-ray collection, or individual film release may be practical when streaming access is fragmented. GateWorld’s guide points readers toward disc options, but stock, edition, price, and region compatibility change by seller.
Before buying, verify:
- Whether the listing is DVD or Blu-ray.
- The disc region and whether your player supports it.
- That all ten SG-1 seasons are included if the listing says “complete series.”
- Whether The Ark of Truth and Continuum are included or sold separately.
- The exact edition, condition, current stock, and return policy.
A complete SG-1 set is the strongest single physical-product fit because it covers the franchise’s longest central series. Blu-ray collections and the two films are sensible adjacent searches, but check every listing rather than assuming a boxed set contains the entire screen franchise.
No single current price or inventory status should be treated as permanent. Confirm those details on the listing you intend to purchase, and check region compatibility before ordering from another country.
What to expect from the franchise’s scale
The core live-action run is substantial: ten seasons of SG-1, five seasons of Atlantis, and two seasons of Universe, plus the original film and two SG-1 continuation films. That length is why a staged plan helps. You can regard SG-1 as the first major commitment, decide afterward whether you want its spin-off, and leave Universe until you know you want the broader setting.
There is no reliable audience or quality statistic in the cited franchise material that would justify ranking one show by a made-up popularity number. The useful distinction for a beginner is structural: SG-1 supplies the foundation, Atlantis broadens it, and Universe provides a later, separate viewpoint.
That structure also explains why a first watch should not begin with a completionist checklist. The 1994 film and SG-1 supply the necessary orientation; the spin-offs and films then have context. The optional productions can wait until you know whether you want every format and period represented.

Amazon’s franchise overview announced a new series with Martin Gero as writer and showrunner. A later Space.com report dated June 3, 2026 said Amazon MGM had canceled that project. Because those reports describe different points in time, do not treat the earlier greenlight as the current production status without checking for a newer official announcement. The status of an unreleased project does not change the recommended order for the completed shows and films.
Gero’s connection to the franchise is longstanding: the announcement quotes him saying, “Twenty years ago, my first real job in television was as a story editor on Stargate: Atlantis.” That background is useful context for the announcement, but it does not alter where a beginner should start.

- Starting with Universe: it is a separate two-season series built around the Ancient ship Destiny, so earlier entries provide useful foundation.
- Putting the films first: both direct-to-video movies follow the SG-1 story and work best after its finale.
- Treating interleaving as mandatory: GateWorld’s list is a specialist recommendation, not a studio-required sequence.
- Assuming one service has everything: the films and series can be cataloged separately, and availability differs by territory.
- Buying the first disc listing you see: confirm format, region, included seasons, edition, condition, stock, and return terms.
- Counting optional entries as prerequisites: Origins and Infinity can wait until after the principal live-action route.
A practical checklist before you press play
- Find Stargate (1994) and confirm you are selecting the feature film, not a television episode or recap.
- Watch the film before beginning SG-1.
- Commit to SG-1 as the central ten-season series.
- After its finale, watch The Ark of Truth, then Continuum.
- Choose whether to watch Atlantis straight through or use GateWorld’s interleaved guide.
- Finish with Universe.
- Add Origins or Infinity only if you want optional franchise history.
- Check local streaming or disc availability immediately before each title, because catalogs and stock change.
Frequently Asked Questions
What order do I watch the Stargate franchise in?
For the simplest first watch, use Stargate (1994), all ten seasons of Stargate SG-1, The Ark of Truth, Continuum, all five seasons of Stargate Atlantis, and then the two seasons of Stargate Universe. GateWorld’s optimized guide offers an optional interleaved order for tighter continuity.
Best Value
Do I need to watch the 1994 movie before SG-1?
It is the recommended starting point because it establishes the Stargate and the premise that SG-1 continues about a year later. You can follow the series without remembering every film detail, but the movie provides useful context.
When should I watch The Ark of Truth?
Watch it after the SG-1 series finale. Amazon MGM places it before the Atlantis season-three finale.
When should I watch Continuum?
For the straightforward route, watch Continuum after The Ark of Truth. It is another direct-to-video SG-1 film, built around Ba’al changing history.
Recommended Free Tools
Do I have to interleave SG-1 and Atlantis?
No. Interleaving follows GateWorld’s continuity-focused recommendation and preserves broadcast-era timing, but watching the shows series by series is sufficient for a first viewing.
Should I watch Atlantis or Universe first?
Watch Atlantis before Universe on the beginner route. Atlantis is the five-season SG-1 spin-off, while Universe is a separate two-season series best saved for the end of the original live-action run.
Are Stargate Origins and Stargate Infinity required?
No. Origins, a 2018 web prequel set in 1939, and Infinity, a one-season animated series from 2002–2003, are optional extras rather than prerequisites.
Where can I stream Stargate?
Availability depends on your country and changes over time. Search each title on your local services and check whether it is included, rented, purchased, or unavailable. Do not assume a Prime Video link or a service carrying SG-1 also carries both films.
Is there a current price for a complete SG-1 set?
Prices and stock vary by seller and edition, so verify the current listing. Check whether it is DVD or Blu-ray, confirm region compatibility, and make sure all ten seasons are included.
The Bottom Line
Start with Stargate (1994), watch all of SG-1, then The Ark of Truth and Continuum, followed by Atlantis and Universe. Use GateWorld’s interleaved order only if precise timeline continuity matters, and treat Origins and Infinity as optional extras.
