For Naruto’s main story, watch the original Naruto series first, then Naruto Shippuden. If you prefer the manga, begin with Naruto, volume 1, and read in publication order. Boruto is an optional follow-on, not a starting point for Naruto’s central story.
What order should you watch Naruto in?
- Start with Naruto, the original anime. VIZ lists it at 220 episodes. VIZ’s Naruto catalog identifies the series and its episode count.
- Continue with Naruto Shippuden. The official Naruto site describes it as taking place after Naruto returns from training with Jiraiya. That makes it the next series in the main anime sequence. The official Naruto site lists Naruto, Naruto Shippuden, and Boruto separately.
You do not need to begin with a movie or Boruto to follow the central Naruto story. The official sources establish the series order, but not a complete movie chronology.

Where should you start if you want to read the manga?
Begin with Naruto, volume 1, then read the manga in publication order through the completed main series. VIZ says the manga debuted in Weekly Shonen Jump in 1999 and concluded in late 2014. The manga’s publication sequence is a straightforward way to experience the main story without switching between episodes and chapters.

Should you watch the anime or read the manga?

Can you skip Naruto filler?
There are two reasonable approaches: watch every episode for the complete anime experience, or consult a current episode-by-episode filler guide if you want a shorter watch. VIZ identifies the original series as 220 episodes and lists Shippuden in parts, but its catalog pages do not classify episodes as manga-adapted, mixed, or filler. No definitive filler boundaries are established by those pages.

If you use a skip guide, check whether it explains how it treats mixed episodes and anime-original arcs. A simple list of episode ranges may omit story material that is partly adapted from the manga.

When should you watch the Naruto movies?
Treat the films as optional extras after beginning the series. The official sources establish that films exist but do not settle their full chronological placement or which ones are essential to the main story. Without a dedicated chronology source, there is no reliable exact point to insert each movie into the episode order.

What comes after Naruto Shippuden?
Boruto is a later continuation centered on the next generation. Watch or read it if you want to continue beyond Naruto’s main story; it is not required to start Naruto or Shippuden.
