For most newcomers, start with Resident Evil 2 (2019), the remake of the 1998 game. It introduces series regulars Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield during the Raccoon City outbreak, without requiring you to play the older entries first. If you would rather begin with a new protagonist and a more isolated horror story, start with Resident Evil 7 biohazard instead.
Where should I start with Resident Evil?
Choose based on whose story and setting appeal to you. Resident Evil 2 is a practical entry into the series’ familiar characters and outbreak-era story; Resident Evil 7 biohazard begins a separate lead character’s story in a more contained setting. These are recommended entry points, not play-order rules published by Capcom.

Capcom’s official series timeline describes Leon arriving in Raccoon City for a new police job and Claire arriving to look for her brother. The outbreak forces both to fight to survive. Capcom presents Resident Evil 7 as Ethan’s first step into survival horror.
Do I need to play Resident Evil games in order?
No. You can begin with a remake or with Resident Evil 7; you do not need to start with the first game to follow either of those stories. Pick a route that matches your interest rather than treating every numbered title as required homework.

Modern classic-character route
- Play Resident Evil 2 (2019 remake) for Leon and Claire’s Raccoon City story.
- Continue with Resident Evil 3 (2020 remake), which follows the same outbreak from a story that begins earlier.
- Play Resident Evil 4 (2023 remake) if you want another Leon story. It takes place in autumn 2004, years after Umbrella’s fall, and moves beyond the Raccoon City outbreak.
Ethan Winters route
- Begin with Resident Evil 7 biohazard, in which Ethan searches for his wife at the Baker residence.
- Continue with Resident Evil Village, which Capcom places three years after the Baker House incident.
Franchise-history route
For the series’ earlier game experience, start with Resident Evil HD Remaster and then follow the numbered entries in release order. This is an option for players specifically interested in the origins; it is not necessary for newcomers who would rather begin with a modern remake or a later story.
Are Resident Evil 2 and 3 remakes connected?
Yes. Both remakes depict the Raccoon City outbreak, but their events overlap rather than forming a simple, uninterrupted sequence. Capcom’s timeline places Resident Evil 3 one day before Resident Evil 2 and describes it as spanning the city’s final days. For a beginner, playing Resident Evil 2 and then Resident Evil 3 is a straightforward route; there is no need to reorder them to follow the chronology.

Resident Evil 2 remakes the 1998 original. Resident Evil 3 remakes Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, originally released in September 1999. The releases are modern reworkings of earlier games, not the original versions themselves.
Should I play the Resident Evil 2 remake or the original?
If you want a modern remake as your entry point, choose Resident Evil 2 (2019). If experiencing the earlier game is part of the appeal, the original Resident Evil 2 released in 1998. Capcom identifies the 2019 game as its remake; the available official information does not establish an objective difficulty or accessibility ranking between the two, so choose by presentation and interest in the original rather than an assumed ease advantage.

Which edition should I buy, and what should I check?
Platform support and bundle contents depend on the particular release and platform. Capcom’s November 22, 2024 announcement describes the Resident Evil Remake Trilogy as a digital-storefront bundle for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC (Steam). Its listed contents are Resident Evil 2 Deluxe Edition, Resident Evil 3, Resident Evil 3 – Classic Costume Pack, Resident Evil Resistance, Resident Evil 4 Gold Edition, and Resident Evil 4 – The Mercenaries.
- Check the product listing for your region and platform before buying; Capcom’s current lineup page is another reference for titles and platform categories.
- Capcom notes that Resident Evil 4 Gold Edition in this bundle is not compatible with Xbox One. Do not assume every item in a multi-platform bundle works on every listed platform.
- Capcom says the bundle’s items can also be purchased individually. Compare what you already own with the included contents to avoid duplicate purchases.
The announcement describes a digital bundle, not a physical boxed set. It does not establish current prices, discounts, physical stock, or availability in every regional storefront.
