Use a Lockbox Key inside a cache room. Look for a building with red flares burning on its roof, go inside, and spend one key on one locked container. A key opens only the container it is used on, not every box in the room.
Find the cache room by its red roof flares
The visual cue for a cache room is red flares burning on the roof of the building. According to PC Gamer’s Marathon location guide (published March 5, 2026), that is the marker to look for before going inside.
Cache rooms do not appear in every match. The guide presents the locations below as places to check, not guaranteed spawn points, so a building that matches the description may be empty on a given run.
Reported cache-room locations
The following examples come from the same PC Gamer guide. It is secondary reporting, not an official Bungie spawn table, and it is not presented as a complete list.

Using a key at a cache room
- Identify a building with red flares burning on its roof.
- Enter the cache room and walk to a locked container.
- Spend one Lockbox Key on that container. It opens only that container.
- Repeat with another key for each remaining locked container you want to open.
Each locked container in a cache room requires its own key. The guide says the possible contents include valuables, salvage, credits, Cores, and consumables.

The guide describes two acquisition routes.
Finding keys as loot
Keys can turn up inside containers or as loose items on objects in the world. Carrying a key into a run carries a loss risk: if you die, the guide says the key can be lost, so spend keys on cache rooms rather than hoarding them.

Buying a key from the CyberAcme Armory
A Lockbox Key can be purchased from the CyberAcme Armory after you unlock the Locksmith upgrade at rank 4. The guide lists the upgrade’s price as 2,500 credits. That figure comes from a March 2026 report and may have changed, so confirm it in the Armory before you spend credits.
The guide also notes that the materials required for purchase can change. Check the live Armory rather than relying on a printed cost.

Keys that are not Lockbox Keys
Several other keys appear in Marathon, and they do not open cache-room containers. A community key index lists these separately:
- Hazard Override Cards
- Ordinary door keys
- Cryo Archive prestige keys
Bungie’s official August 18, 2026 update mentions Locker keys for a limited Ordnance Heist event. That update does not state that these are Lockbox Keys or change how Lockbox Keys are used, so do not treat the two as the same item.

Bungie’s official Marathon material does not describe Lockbox Key locations or spawn rules, so the building descriptions above should be checked in a match.
