In Where Winds Meet, an Affinity build is about more than raising one stat: Momentum is associated with Maximum Physical Attack and Affinity Rate, while Affinity Rate affects how often an Affinity result occurs and Affinity Damage Bonus affects its payoff. Inner Ways and gear matter only when their conditions match your weapon, attacks, target and rotation. There is no confirmed universal stat priority or current best-in-slot ranking here; the Version 2.2 planner last verified October 6, 2026 says its detailed recommendations are still being re-checked.
What Affinity changes—and what it does not
Affinity Rate and Affinity Damage Bonus address separate parts of a damage result. Rate concerns the chance of triggering an Affinity result; the damage bonus concerns how much damage that result adds. A bonus to one is not automatically a bonus to the other. The secondary Affinity guide distinguishes Affinity Rate, Direct Affinity Rate and Affinity Damage Bonus. The handbook also cautions that Precision, Critical and Affinity are different mechanics, not interchangeable labels. Read the handbook’s stat overview.
Maximum and minimum attack should not be treated as identical inputs. The handbook associates Affinity with Maximum Physical Attack, while Agility is associated with Minimum Physical Attack and Critical Rate. That distinction is a reason to check what a stat or skill actually affects rather than assuming an Affinity bonus scales every attack value equally.
How Momentum fits into an Affinity build
Momentum is associated with both Maximum Physical Attack and Affinity Rate in the handbook and an August 2026 guide. It can therefore be relevant to both the attack ceiling and the chance of an Affinity result. Those sources do not establish a universal conversion coefficient from Momentum points to Affinity Rate, however. Do not assume each point has a fixed, invariant value or calculate a precise damage gain from Momentum alone. Check the handbook’s stat descriptions.

When comparing Momentum with another stat, first identify whether you are trying to increase the chance of an Affinity result, its damage payoff, or another part of the skill’s attack scaling. The name of a stat alone does not establish which choice will improve your complete rotation most.
Check whether an Inner Way fits your rotation
An Inner Way is useful only if its actual trigger and effect line up with how you fight. Read the current in-game tooltip and ask whether the effect activates with your weapon, the action you use, the target you are fighting and the timing of your rotation. A passive that rarely triggers in your real sequence may contribute less than one whose conditions are reliably met, even if its description sounds stronger.

Insightful Strike and Echoes of Oblivion are examples mentioned by a secondary guide; it also discusses Adaptive Steel, Envigorated Warrior and Morale Chant. Treat these as names to inspect in the current tooltip, not as timeless recommendations. Their value depends on the effect and conditions currently shown in-game, and on whether your build meets them. See the secondary guide’s Inner Way discussion.
Compare gear by the effect it actually produces
Gear comparisons should include the complete item and any set effect, not just one attractive stat line. Keep the active weapon pair, target, buffs and attack sequence as consistent as possible, then change one item or effect at a time. This makes it easier to tell whether a gain came from Affinity Rate, damage payoff, attack scaling or a conditional bonus. The handbook recommends checking detailed attributes and set bonuses while keeping the build and temporary effects stable. See its gear-comparison guidance.

A secondary guide reports Affinity-aligned bonuses for Jadewear and Hawkwing, and mentions Veil of the Willow for rotations that alternate Light and Heavy attacks. These are leads for checking current in-game effects, not confirmed Version 2.2 best-in-slot choices. The guide was updated in November 2025, while the planner’s October 2026 Version 2.2 recommendations remain under review. Consult the secondary guide; check the handbook’s gear notes.
A controlled way to judge a build change
- Record your starting setup. Note the active weapon pair, gear, Inner Ways, target, buffs and attack sequence.
- Inspect the detailed attributes and set effects. Identify which values or conditions the proposed change is meant to affect.
- Change one thing. Swap a single item, stat line or passive while keeping the rest of the setup as similar as possible.
- Repeat the same sequence against the same target. Keep buffs and starting conditions consistent, and compare the full sequence rather than selecting its largest individual hit.
- Decide whether the change fits your actual use. Check whether conditional effects activated during the sequence and whether the repeated result improved, not merely whether one peak number looked larger.
This is a practical comparison method, not a numeric optimization formula. Community calculation work is reverse-engineered, not official, and notes that some variables are opaque or vestigial; the handbook also labels its balance version unverified. Avoid treating an exact formula or a single damage number as settled proof of a universal ranking. See the community calculation document; see the handbook’s version note.

Why older build rankings need caution
Version matters: the community-maintained planner was last verified October 6, 2026 for Version 2.2 and says its Inner Way, gear-set and stat recommendations are being re-checked. That makes older named sets and exact tiers unsuitable as confirmed current recommendations. Use their effects as candidates to verify in-game, then judge them against your weapon, action pattern and repeatable sequence. Check the planner and its version disclosure.
