There is no verified single “best settings” preset for Where Winds Meet across every PC and console. The smoothest exploration setup depends on your hardware, display, storage device and the options exposed by your current game build. Use a performance-first starting point, then raise image quality one change at a time while checking busy towns, combat encounters and large outdoor areas.
This guide separates confirmed platform information from practical tuning advice. It does not assume a frame-rate target or graphics toggle that the current menu may not provide.

Start with the platform you actually use
Settings advice changes substantially between a Windows PC, a base PS5, a PS5 Pro, an Xbox Series X and an Xbox Series S. Console manufacturers describe certain rendering technologies, but those descriptions do not automatically mean the game exposes a matching switch in its own options menu. Before changing anything, open the current build’s graphics, display and accessibility menus and record the options you can actually select.

- PS5 and PS5 Pro: Check the game’s current display modes and your television or monitor’s capabilities. PS5 Pro has additional platform enhancements, but the official description does not establish a universal frame-rate mode.
- Xbox Series X and Series S: Confirm the console’s HDR and display setup, then check the game’s available options. Xbox’s published upscale figures are platform claims, not a promise of identical native rendering or stable performance in every scene.
If exploration comfort matters more than combat difficulty, also consider Story Mode. PlayStation describes Story Mode as the choice for players who prefer exploration and storyline experiences, while Challenge Mode is aimed at players who enjoy combat. Multiplayer is optional, so you do not need to join other players to use an exploration-focused approach.

PC requirements: two official lists, two different storage figures
The official PC launcher guide and the Steam listing do not present identical requirements. Do not merge their storage numbers into one specification. The launcher guide gives its own minimum, recommended and high tiers; Steam publishes a separate requirement set for its distribution. The shared recommended hardware is useful as a reference point, while the storage figures must remain attributed to their source.
Official launcher guide tiers
| Tier | Processor | Graphics | Memory | Storage listed by the launcher guide |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum | Listed in the guide; check the current launcher page for the exact entry | Listed in the guide; check the current launcher page for the exact entry | Listed in the guide; check the current launcher page for the exact entry | 60 GB HDD available space; SSD recommended |
| Recommended | Intel Core i7-10700 or AMD Ryzen 7 3700X | NVIDIA RTX 2070 SUPER, AMD RX 6700 XT or Intel Arc A750 | 32 GB RAM | 100 GB SSD available space |
| High | Intel Core i7-12700K or AMD Ryzen 9 5950X | NVIDIA RTX 3080 or AMD RX 6800 XT | 32 GB RAM | 100 GB SSD available space |
The launcher guide says, “For the best experience, we recommend installing the game on an SSD.” It also warns that download speeds may be slower when installing on an HDD. That is a qualitative setup recommendation, not a measured promise of higher frame rates or a quantified reduction in stutter.
Steam listing requirements
| Tier | Processor | Graphics | Memory | Other requirements |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum | Intel Core i7-7700K or AMD Ryzen 5 1600 | NVIDIA GTX 1060 (6 GB) or AMD RX 480 (8 GB) | 16 GB RAM | DirectX 12; 130 GB available space |
| Recommended | Intel Core i7-10700 or AMD Ryzen 7 3700X | NVIDIA RTX 2070 SUPER, AMD RX 6700 XT or Intel Arc A750 | 32 GB RAM | DirectX 12; 200 GB available space |
Steam’s listing was shown as published November 14, 2025 and accessed in 2026. Its 130 GB minimum and 200 GB recommended figures are not interchangeable with the launcher guide’s 60 GB HDD minimum or 100 GB SSD recommended/high figures. Requirements and install sizes can change with patches, so leave more room than the bare minimum when possible.

Prepare a PC for consistent exploration
Install on an SSD when practical
Use an SSD rather than an HDD if your system has the choice. This follows the official launcher guidance and can make installation and asset loading more practical, but no official source quantifies an FPS gain. Do not buy a particular drive solely on the expectation of a guaranteed frame-rate increase. Keep sufficient free space for updates, shader data and temporary patch files.
Check the rest of the system before tuning graphics
- Install the current Windows updates and graphics-driver release supported by your GPU manufacturer.
- Close overlays, recording tools and background downloads that compete for CPU, GPU, memory or storage bandwidth.
- Use the operating system’s high-performance or game-focused power profile when your laptop or desktop offers one.
- On a laptop, connect AC power and confirm that the system is not using an integrated GPU instead of the discrete adapter.
- Watch GPU memory, system memory, temperatures and utilization while visiting a dense town and a large outdoor area. A setting that looks fine in an empty scene may cause hitching when streaming more assets.
Best PC settings workflow when the menu varies by build
The current official material does not provide a complete, verified list of PC graphics toggles. Therefore, do not copy a preset that names options you cannot find. Use the following sequence with the controls your build actually exposes.
- Record a baseline. Start in the game’s default preset and visit the places where you notice slowdown: a crowded settlement, a busy road, a combat encounter and a wide landscape. Note perceived smoothness, image clarity and whether hitching occurs when turning the camera or entering a new area.
- Choose the performance-oriented preset, if offered. If the current build includes a performance, low or similar preset, select it first. This is a starting point, not a verified universal recipe.
- Set a sensible output resolution. Use your display’s native resolution only if your GPU can sustain the desired consistency. If the game offers resolution scaling or an upscaler, confirm what the menu calls it and whether your hardware supports it before enabling it.
- Adjust expensive effects before texture quality. If the menu separates shadows, reflections, volumetric effects, foliage, lighting or view distance, lower one demanding category at a time and revisit the same locations. Keep textures higher when GPU memory allows; reducing every option at once makes it difficult to identify the actual bottleneck.
- Test any frame-generation option carefully. Frame generation can create additional displayed frames from rendered frames, but it does not remove the underlying rendering workload and may add latency or artifacts. Use it only when the current build exposes it and your hardware meets its requirements.
- Apply an in-game frame-rate cap only when available. A cap can make frame pacing more consistent and reduce unnecessary GPU load, but the useful value depends on the display and the performance your system can sustain. Do not assume a specific cap is supported unless the menu shows it.
- Change one variable at a time. After each adjustment, repeat the same route and camera movements. Keep the change if it improves consistency without an image-quality cost you dislike; revert it if it merely makes the scene softer.
- Stop when consistency is good. The goal for exploration is reliable traversal through dense and open areas, not the highest preset in a quiet test location.
How to diagnose stuttering on PC
“Stuttering” can describe several different problems. Identify the symptom before lowering every setting.
Rank #3
Short hitches when entering a new area
Asset streaming, background downloads, shader work or storage activity can cause brief pauses. Confirm that the installation is on an SSD, leave free disk space for updates and close applications that are reading or writing heavily. If the hitching began after a patch, check the current official support information before assuming a graphics option is responsible.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Low performance throughout a scene
Check GPU utilization and temperature. If the GPU is near full load, reduce output resolution, resolution scale or the most expensive lighting, shadow, reflection and volumetric options exposed by your menu. If GPU use is low while one or more CPU cores are saturated, lowering visual quality may have little effect; reduce simulation-heavy or view-distance options if available and close CPU-heavy background programs.
Performance that falls only in towns or large fights
Use those locations for every comparison. Crowds, long view distances, foliage and effects can create a different bottleneck from an isolated landscape. Keep a setting only after it survives both a dense area and normal travel.

Uneven motion despite a high counter
A high instantaneous frame-rate number does not prove consistent frame pacing. If the build offers a frame-rate cap, test a value your system can hold in the most demanding area you regularly visit. If it does not, use the display’s supported refresh behavior and the game’s available modes rather than inventing a cap through unsupported tools.
PS5 and PS5 Pro: what is confirmed and what is not
PlayStation identifies PS5 Pro enhancements for Where Winds Meet as higher rendering resolution, optimized ray-tracing effects and support for PSSR, Sony’s PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution technology. PlayStation also describes 4K presentation on a compatible display. These are official platform features; they do not establish a guaranteed frame rate, a specific in-game toggle or parity with a PC setting.
Practical setup on a base PS5
- Open the game’s display or graphics menu and note whether it offers a quality, performance or other mode in the current version.
- Choose the mode that matches your priority. For long exploration sessions, favor the option that feels consistent while moving the camera, not the one that looks best in a stationary scene.
- Set the PS5 and television or monitor to compatible resolution, HDR and refresh-rate settings. If HDR looks washed out or too dark, rerun the console’s HDR calibration and check the display’s own picture mode.
- Use the same route through a crowded area and an open landscape to compare modes. Keep the mode that behaves better where you actually play.
Practical setup on PS5 Pro
Use a compatible 4K display if you want to evaluate the higher-resolution presentation PlayStation describes. Check whether the game exposes a Pro-specific mode or whether the enhancement is automatic. Do not treat PSSR or optimized ray tracing as proof that every scene will maintain a particular frame rate; the official description does not state such a target.

Readable exploration controls
PlayStation lists Clear Text, Large Text and Visual Comfort (Basic) accessibility features. These can matter as much as rendering quality during a long journey. Enable the text size, contrast or comfort option that improves readability without obscuring navigation information, then verify the result in dialogue, menus and the open world.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Xbox Series X and Series S: resolution claims and storage planning
Xbox Wire reports HDR support and AMD FSR 2 upscaling. Its June 9, 2026 announcement says Xbox Series X provides a 4K upscale from 1080p and Series S provides a 2K upscale from 900p. Those figures describe Xbox platform rendering behavior; they are not selectable native-resolution settings and do not guarantee a stable frame rate in every scene.
Series X setup
- Use a 4K-compatible display if you want to see the published 4K upscale presentation.
- Enable HDR on both the console and display only when the display handles it correctly; calibrate HDR through the Xbox system settings.
- Check the game’s own options for any performance or quality choice and test it in dense and open areas.
- Do not compare the 4K upscale figure directly with a PC’s native 4K output as though they represented the same internal rendering workload.
Series S setup
- Expect the platform description of a 2K upscale from 900p, subject to the current build and display chain.
- Prioritize consistent motion and readable image quality over a nominal resolution comparison with Series X.
- Check the game menu for available modes rather than assuming that the Xbox platform specification creates a user-selectable switch.
Leave update headroom
The official Xbox launch FAQ recommends keeping 150–200 GB of free storage, depending on the device, so patches have room to install. This is a free-space recommendation, not the game’s guaranteed final install size. If the console is nearly full, remove or move unused games before a large update rather than waiting for installation errors.

Smooth traversal is not only a rendering problem. Story Mode is the exploration-oriented difficulty choice described by PlayStation, while Challenge Mode is intended for players who want more demanding combat. Choosing Story Mode can reduce interruptions from fights without changing your display settings. Multiplayer remains optional.
- Increase text size or enable Clear Text when dialogue and interface labels are difficult to read from your normal seating distance.
- Use Visual Comfort (Basic) if the available presentation causes eye strain during camera movement or long sessions.
- Adjust display brightness and HDR calibration together; changing only the television’s brightness can crush dark detail or make highlights distracting.
- Choose a camera or motion option only if it is present in the current menu. Do not assume that a setting documented for another platform exists on yours.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Copying a console mode to PC: Platform enhancements such as PSSR, FSR 2 or an advertised upscale do not prove that the same option exists on Windows.
- Confusing storage requirements: The launcher guide’s 100 GB SSD recommendation, Steam’s 130 GB minimum and 200 GB recommended figures, and Xbox’s 150–200 GB free-space advice answer different questions.
- Expecting an SSD to add a fixed number of frames per second: The official guide recommends SSD installation but gives no quantified FPS or stutter improvement.
- Lowering every setting at once: You lose the ability to identify whether resolution, shadows, streaming or another category caused the problem.
- Assuming a feature claim is a menu option: Confirm the exact label and behavior in the current build.
- Testing only in an empty field: Exploration slowdowns often appear when streaming a settlement, crowd or complex vista.
- Filling the drive completely: Leave update headroom, especially on Xbox where the launch FAQ recommends 150–200 GB free depending on the device.
A concise decision path
- Identify your platform and model, then check the current game menu.
- On PC, compare your hardware with both the official launcher guide and the Steam listing, keeping their storage figures separate.
- Install on an SSD when practical and leave room for patches.
- Start with the performance-oriented preset or mode if the game offers one.
- Test a dense settlement, an open route and combat before raising image quality.
- Change one setting at a time, beginning with resolution scaling or the most expensive effects available in your menu.
- On PS5 Pro, use a compatible 4K display to assess the published resolution, ray-tracing and PSSR enhancements; on Xbox, treat the 4K-from-1080p and 2K-from-900p figures as platform descriptions rather than frame-rate guarantees.
- Use Story Mode and the listed text or visual-comfort features if they make exploration easier to follow.
- Recheck official requirements and platform notes after major patches because menus, storage needs and feature support can change.
The Bottom Line
The safest smooth-exploration setup is hardware-aware and incremental: use an SSD on PC when possible, begin with the current build’s performance option, test demanding locations, and change one control at a time. Console enhancement claims describe capabilities, not guaranteed frame rates or identical user-selectable modes.
