Strategic Sword is unlocked through Skill Theft in its sanctum—not by looting a sword—and its current pairing is Heavenquaker Spear on the Bellstrike – Umbra path.
Quick answer: the basic Strategic Sword combo
Use this as the starting rotation:
Inner Track Slash
→ complete its follow-up sequence
→ Second Track Slash or another Bleed source
→ reach 5 Bleed stacks
→ Inner Balance Strike IIIDo not spend Bleed early unless the encounter, build, or timing makes an early cash-out worthwhile. Inner Balance Strike III produces its major payoff against a target carrying five Bleed stacks. Below five stacks, it performs its normal attack instead.

Skill names matter more than default keybinds. Current PC references commonly show Q for Inner Track Slash and ~ for Inner Balance Strike III, but controls can be remapped. Use the binding displayed beside each skill in your own Martial Art loadout.

Inner Track Slash is a Martial Skill that dashes to a target, slashes it, and applies Bleed. It also has a follow-up sequence. Treating it as a one-hit gap closer misses much of its value: the initial strike and follow-up contribute to the Bleed stack setup.

A commonly recommended setup is two uses of Inner Track Slash, then stopping before a third sequence. Depending on breakthrough level, Inner Ways, weapon pairing, and other active Bleed sources, this can put the target at or near the five-stack threshold. It is not a universal rule that exactly two casts always produce exactly five stacks.
The reason to stop and check is that another Inner Track Slash sequence can trigger the five-stack interaction or otherwise consume the setup you were saving for a finisher. Watch the target’s debuff display rather than pressing the skill repeatedly by habit.
Strategic Sword skills used in the Bleed rotation
Inner Track Slash
- Type: Martial Skill.
- Role: Gap-closing Bleed application and stack building.
- Important detail: Complete its follow-up sequence; the skill is not limited to its opening hit.
Second Track Slash
- Type: Charged Skill.
- Role: Forward charged dash that applies Bleed.
- Defensive value: Guides describe protection during the dash, including invisibility and damage immunity.
Inner Balance Strike III
- Type: Special Skill.
- Role: Bleed spender and burst attack.
- Effect: Consumes Endurance, evades backward, and strikes the area previously occupied. Against five Bleed stacks, it performs the large Bleed payoff and clears those stacks.
- Unlock: Activate the eighth node of the Strategic Sword talent tree, currently identified as the Blade Out basic talent node. → check the debuff counter
→ Inner Balance Strike III at 5 BleedThis is the safest general-purpose pattern. If Inner Track Slash’s follow-up already brings the enemy to five stacks, use the spender immediately rather than adding unnecessary attacks.

Strategic Sword plus Heavenquaker Spear
The current Strategic Sword pairing is Heavenquaker Spear, not the previously circulated Bellstrike – Splendor pairing. Strategic Sword belongs to Bellstrike – Umbra.
Heavenquaker Spear setup
→ apply Soul-Shaken
→ switch to Strategic Sword
→ Inner Track Slash and follow-up
→ Second Track Slash or charged attack
→ reach 5 Bleed
→ Inner Balance Strike IIIThis is a rotation template, not a mandatory button sequence. The exact opener changes with Sword Horizon, Wolfchaser’s Art, Fivefold Bleed, and other Inner Ways.
Version 2.0 changed the damage model: Bleeding and High Bleeding now deal baseline Qi damage, and that damage is amplified when the target has Soul-Shaken from Heavenquaker Spear. Tier 6 Wolfchaser’s Art also makes Sober Sorrow apply Soul-Shaken on hit without requiring the target to already have the status. Its consecutive-hit requirement for Wine Gu was reduced from five hits in three seconds to three, with continued combo hits refreshing the duration. Sword Horizon is the principal Strategic Sword Inner Way referenced in current high-end builds. Its associated Crosswind Blade follow-up can serve as an alternate Bleed payoff when the target reaches maximum Bleed. Crosswind Blade is granted by Sword Horizon; it is not part of the base Strategic Sword unlock.

At Tier 3, Sword Horizon can extend the remaining duration of the player’s active DoTs by 10 seconds after a guaranteed-Affinity High Bleeding hit against a non-player unit, up to a maximum remaining duration of 16 seconds. The listed extendable effects include Strategic Sword’s Bleed, Dragon’s Breath’s Dark Scorch, Bitter Seasons’ Qingyi’s Poison, and Fivefold Bleed’s Weeping Blood.
In Arena, the Bleed Mechanism Enhancement talent increases the stagger duration caused by High Bleeding. Do not confuse Strategic Sword’s Bleed with Fivefold Bleed: current references treat them as separate debuffs, and their effects should not be assumed interchangeable without checking the current Inner Way text.
How to unlock Strategic Sword
Start from the live in-game marker:
- Open Develop.
- Open Martial Art.
- Select Strategic Sword.
- Select Obtain.
The Obtain clue points to the Strategic Sword Skill Theft location in southern Qinghe, near the area various guides call Lone Cloud Sanctum or Strategic Sword Sanctum, between Palace of Annals and Encircling Lake. English landmark names vary between guides, so the in-game Obtain marker is the authoritative navigation reference. A route overview is available at GameGuides’ Strategic Sword unlock guide.
Required prerequisites
- Reach level 8.
- Complete the introductory Skill Theft mission.
- Obtain Touch of Death through the Qinghe side story Echoes of Old Battles, also called Volume I – The Realm Endures in some guides.
- Carry one unused Dragon Key.
Early Dragon Key sources include first clears of Tiger Fort, Gourmand’s Grove, and Bloomveil Monastery. Other progression and outpost rewards can also provide keys, so you do not need one from a particular named activity.

Sanctum route and Skill Theft timing
- Travel to the position shown by Obtain.
- At the entrance, interact with the Dragon Pillar and spend one Dragon Key.
- Enter the sanctum and stay undetected.
- Use Touch of Death on guards whose sight lines block the route. Stealth alternatives such as Veil of Stillness may also bypass guards; Touch of Death is the practical recommended option, not necessarily a universal hard requirement of Skill Theft.
- In the first room, wait for patrols to turn away before moving or attacking.
- Loot the first chest, then move toward the second chest on the left.
- Continue east and climb the ramp to the second floor.
- Turn back toward the previous room and use the ledge leading to the blue Skill Theft circle.
- Enter the circle and press the displayed button when the golden ring appears.
Successful timing grants the Strategic Sword Martial Art and its associated weapon skills. This is a Skill Theft reward, not a normal equipment drop. The stealth route and timing interaction are also outlined by Game8’s Strategic Sword unlock guide.
Fixes for common problems
“Obtain” does not show the sanctum
Check that you have completed the introductory Skill Theft mission, reached the required progression level, and unlocked Strategic Sword in the Martial Art menu. Use Develop → Martial Art → Strategic Sword → Obtain instead of searching for an old or inconsistent English map label.
The Dragon Pillar will not open
You need an unused Dragon Key. Completing a Skill Theft quest does not replace the key requirement.
Guards detect you
Check patrol vision cones before moving. A guard may detect you while you attack another guard, or you may have entered combat before reaching the Skill Theft point. Wait for patrols, use cover, and deal with guards one at a time. Touch of Death only provides a stealth-kill option for suitable targets; it does not make the entire sanctum undetectable.

The Skill Theft prompt fails
Press the displayed input when the indicator reaches the golden ring. Pressing early or late fails the timing attempt.
Inner Balance Strike III does not burst
Confirm that the target has five Bleed stacks before casting. Below five, the skill performs its normal behavior instead of the maximum-stack payoff.
Bleed disappears unexpectedly
The next Inner Track Slash sequence may trigger the five-stack interaction or consume the setup you intended to save. Stop after the required setup and check the debuff counter before continuing.

Damage is lower than an old guide claims
Pre-2.0 damage explanations are not current. Version 2.0 normalized Bleeding and High Bleeding as baseline Qi damage and added the Soul-Shaken amplification interaction. Older damage comparisons should not be treated as current benchmarks.
