Where Winds Meet is a free-to-play Wuxia open-world RPG set in tenth-century China. It launched globally on PC and PlayStation 5 on November 14, 2025, and combines a solo story with co-op and other online modes. Calling it an MMO without qualification can set the wrong expectation: official descriptions emphasize open-world action-adventure and small-group play, not a game built primarily around large-scale persistent group activity.
What kind of game is Where Winds Meet?
Developed by Everstone Studio and published by NetEase Games, Where Winds Meet is a martial-arts action-adventure RPG rooted in Wuxia—the tradition of stories about wandering heroes, martial arts, and codes of honor. Its setting draws on tenth-century China during the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period, a time of political upheaval.
The game is built around exploring an open world, following a narrative, and fighting with weapons and martial techniques. NetEase advertised more than 20 regions, more than 10,000 unique NPCs, and more than 150 hours of narratively driven exploration and adventure. Those are publisher-provided figures, not independently verified counts or a promise that every player will spend 150 hours completing the game. Is Where Winds Meet an MMO?
“MMO” is an imprecise shorthand for Where Winds Meet. The official descriptions support a mix of solo narrative play, co-op for up to four players, and online multiplayer features that include PvP. They do not establish that persistent, large-scale group play is the main experience in the way many players mean when they say “conventional MMO.” Steam’s listing describes cross-platform multiplayer, co-op, and online PvP; the PlayStation product page describes a solo story and co-op.

Yes. PlayStation describes a solo story, so you do not need to approach the game as a multiplayer-only experience. The same page lists co-op with up to four friends, allowing players to bring others in without making group play a prerequisite for the advertised story mode.
PlayStation also lists two combat options:
- Story Mode: for players who prioritize exploration and story.
- Challenge Mode: for players seeking tougher combat.
Those descriptions establish the modes’ broad intent; they do not specify detailed difficulty settings or accessibility features. NetEase’s advertised 150-plus hours refers to narratively driven exploration and adventure content, not a guaranteed completion time for an individual player.

What are the setting and world like?
The setting is a martial-arts fantasy interpretation of tenth-century China, framed by the political instability of the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period. Expect a world of wandering heroes, factions, and upheaval rather than a strictly documentary historical simulation.
Exploration is a major part of the pitch. The PlayStation page describes cities, caves, forests, temples, and thousands of points of interest. NetEase separately promotes more than 20 regions and more than 10,000 unique NPCs; those numbers should be read as the publisher’s advertised scale claims, not as independently verified measurements.
How does combat work?
Official materials describe weapon-based combat supported by martial-arts sets and mystical techniques. Listed weapons include the sword, spear, Mo blade, rope dart, umbrella, and fan. The range suggests different weapon identities and combat styles, but the available official descriptions do not establish how each weapon feels in play or how the systems compare in balance.
On PS5, PlayStation says the game supports DualSense haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. A DualSense wireless controller is therefore a relevant optional accessory for that version, not a required additional purchase.

Where Winds Meet platforms and cross-play
Where Winds Meet launched globally on PC and PS5 on November 14, 2025. NetEase named Steam, the PlayStation Store, Epic Games Store, and the official website as launch distribution routes. NetEase announced iOS and Android availability in December 2025. Steam’s current description lists Xbox, PS5, PC, and mobile and advertises full cross-play and cross-progression.
NetEase said the PC and PS5 launch versions supported cross-play and cross-progression; its later Steam description extends those platform claims to Xbox and mobile, and the mobile announcement says mobile supports both. These statements do not by themselves settle regional availability, account-linking steps, or every platform-specific exception. Is Where Winds Meet free to play?
Yes. The game is free to play, but platform descriptions differ on the details of optional purchases. PlayStation lists an optional battle pass, paid cosmetics, and a monthly subscription. Steam says gameplay content is entirely free and describes monetization as limited to cosmetics. Because those descriptions are not identical, treat purchases as optional but check the current store for the exact offers available on your platform.
At global launch, NetEase said more than 180 cosmetics—including over 80 outfits and over 100 accessories—would be available for free. That was a launch-period statement; it does not establish the contents of today’s shop or what remains available now.
What to consider before you start
- How you want to play: The official descriptions support a solo story as well as co-op and online modes. If you are looking for a conventional MMO centered on persistent large-scale group play, the available descriptions do not establish that as the game’s core structure.
- What you want from combat: PlayStation’s Story Mode is aimed at exploration and story, while Challenge Mode is for tougher combat. The official descriptions do not provide enough detail to compare precise difficulty settings.
- Which device suits you: The platform descriptions identify PC, PS5, Xbox, and mobile, but local availability can vary. On PS5, the game advertises DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers.
- Your comfort with optional purchases: The game is free to play, while PlayStation and Steam describe monetization differently. Review the store for your platform if the battle pass, subscription, or cosmetic offers matter to your decision.
What to expect from seasonal updates
In a pre-launch PlayStation Blog article, Everstone said updates would arrive in themed seasons: some would advance the core narrative, while others would add modes and limited-time events. That is a historical roadmap statement, not confirmation of a particular future schedule or a guarantee that any specific content will arrive.
