In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, only the vaulting pole and ladder are effectively permanent tools. They can be used indefinitely. Fishing rods, bug nets, improved tools made with Pretty Good Tools recipes, Golden Tools, and slingshots all have finite durability; Golden Tools last longer, but they are not indestructible.

What “last forever” means in New Horizons

For this question, a tool lasts forever if normal use never causes it to disappear or require replacement. That is different from a tool being valuable, expensive to craft, or visually special. New Horizons uses a durability system for most tools: repeated actions eventually consume the tool, and you must craft or obtain another one.

The answer here is specific to Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Nintendo’s beginner guide describes the general breakage system, while a community-maintained New Horizons FAQ identifies the non-breaking exceptions. Other Animal Crossing games can use different tool rules, so the result should not be generalized to the entire series.

Tool durability at a glance

Tool group Durability result What the cited guidance establishes
Vaulting pole Does not break The Chibi Snorlax ACNH FAQ lists it as a non-breaking tool.
Ladder Does not break The same FAQ lists it as a non-breaking tool.
Basic fishing rod Breaks Nintendo says basic fishing and bug-catching tools break after use.
Basic bug net Breaks Nintendo includes basic bug-catching tools in the breakage rule.
Tools made with Pretty Good Tools recipes Breaks, but lasts longer than basic versions Nintendo describes the recipes as producing better fishing rods and nets with longer life.
Golden Tools Breaks Nintendo Life calls them the most durable craftable tools, not unbreakable ones.
Slingshot Breaks The Chibi Snorlax ACNH FAQ says it cannot be upgraded and still breaks.

The two tools you can keep permanently

Vaulting pole

The vaulting pole is one of the two exceptions identified by the New Horizons FAQ. It is used to cross rivers and reach parts of an island separated by water. Ordinary use does not consume it, so you do not need a spare pole for a long island visit or a resource-gathering trip.

  • Build your community from scratch on a deserted island brimming with possibility; Create your personal getaway and customize your character, home, decorations, and even the landscape itself
  • Collect materials to construct everything from furniture to tools. Then, use what you create to give your island a personal touch
  • Watch as the time of day and seasons match real life—even your hemisphere. Each day holds potential for surprises and discoveries
  • Get to know the island residents, garden, fish, decorate, hunt for fossils, and more.
  • Show off your paradise – play on the same system with a total of 4 people, or play together online or over local wireless for fun with up to 8 players

That permanence applies to durability, not to every possible way an item could leave your inventory. Dropping, selling, discarding, or otherwise managing the item is separate from the tool’s breakage behavior. Keep the pole in your pockets or storage when you want guaranteed access to it.

Ladder

The ladder is the other indefinite-use tool. It lets you climb between different elevations on an island, making it useful when collecting materials, checking cliffs, or moving between areas during routine chores. The cited FAQ classifies it with the vaulting pole as non-breaking.

As with the pole, “permanent” means the ladder has no normal use-based failure. It does not mean the game will restore one that you intentionally remove from your inventory. If you are organizing storage or changing your carrying load, treat the ladder as an item you still need to retain even though it never wears out.

Why most tools eventually disappear

Nintendo’s official beginner guide explains the mechanic plainly: “By now you may have noticed that basic tools for fishing or bug-catching will break after some usage.” The wording matters because it describes a usage-based limit rather than a timer. A rod or net is not guaranteed to vanish at a particular real-world date; its remaining life is consumed by use.

The guide also introduces Pretty Good Tools recipes. Nintendo says these recipes create better fishing rods and nets that “last much longer” than basic versions. Longer life reduces how often you return to a workbench, but it does not change the underlying category from breakable to permanent.

The cited material does not establish a universal, published use count for every tool. Avoid planning around an exact number unless the game displays one in your own testing or a current, tool-specific source documents it. The reliable distinction is the one Nintendo makes: basic tools break, improved versions last longer, and the two movement tools are exceptions according to the community FAQ.

Golden Tools: the longest-lasting option, not an everlasting one

Golden Tools are often misunderstood because they look like an end point to the crafting system. Nintendo Life’s guide, updated January 20, 2026, describes them as “the most durable items available to craft” while explicitly adding that they “are not unbreakable.” Their value is extra longevity and their distinctive appearance, not immunity from the durability system.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons - For Nintendo Switch (AUS VERSION)
  • Share Your Paradise - Show off your island utopia to family and friends - or pack your bags and visit theirs.
  • Get Building - Experience a robust new crafting system - collect materials to construct everything from furniture to tools!
  • Create Your Perfect Getaway - Craft everything from tools to creature comforts as you create and customize your island community.
  • Explore Your Island - Collect bugs, decorate your paradise throughout the day, or enjoy sunset on the beach while fishing in the ocean.
  • Play Together - Up to eight players can reside on an island; four residents of the same island can play together simultaneously on a single system.

That distinction changes how you should use them. A Golden Tool can be a sensible choice when you want fewer interruptions during a long session, but it cannot replace a permanent vaulting pole or ladder because it will eventually need to be replaced. Keep the materials and crafting access needed for your routine tools even after you obtain a golden version.

Golden status also should not be treated as proof that every other golden item follows the same rule. The relevant claim is about Golden Tools as a craftable tool tier: they last the longest among the craftable options described by the guide, yet remain consumable.

The slingshot has no permanent upgrade

The Chibi Snorlax ACNH FAQ specifically notes that the slingshot still breaks and cannot be upgraded. That makes it different from fishing rods and nets, for which Nintendo documents longer-lasting Pretty Good Tools recipes.

If you use a slingshot regularly, plan for replacement rather than waiting for a higher durability tier. Carrying or storing a spare is a practical response to its fixed upgrade path. The spare does not need to be a special version; the important point is that the game does not provide a cited unbreakable or improved slingshot category.

How to prepare for tool breakage

Carry permanent movement tools first

Because the pole and ladder do not consume durability, they are dependable parts of an exploration loadout. Put them in your pockets before a trip that involves rivers or cliffs. This avoids confusing a missing item with a broken one and leaves your limited replacement capacity for tools that actually wear out.

Use longer-lasting recipes for repeated work

When you expect to fish or catch bugs for an extended period, choose the better versions made with Pretty Good Tools recipes where available. Nintendo’s claim is comparative: these versions last much longer than basic fishing rods and nets. They still belong to the breakable category, so bring a way to craft or replace them if the session is unusually long.

Separate exploration planning from harvesting planning

A movement-heavy trip depends on access across water and elevation; the permanent tools cover those needs. A harvesting trip may also involve fishing, bug-catching, or shooting targets, all of which use tools with finite life. Packing decisions should therefore account for the activity, not just the island destination.

  • Take in-game photos of your designs and add them to your portfolio. Show them to other characters and you may get more requests to create vacation homes. Share the photos with other players using the in-game Showroom in the Happy Home Network app and they can tour your personally-designed resort islands or go tour theirs for some relaxation and inspiration.
  • Purchase the Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Happy Home Paradise DLC from Nintendo eShop, or download and play it as part of an active Nintendo Switch Online plus Expansion Pack membership at no extra cost.

Keep a replacement routine

For every breakable tool you use often, decide where its replacement will come from: a stored spare, a nearby crafting setup, or materials carried for later crafting. This is especially important for the slingshot because the cited FAQ gives it no upgrade path. The routine prevents a broken item from ending a task unexpectedly.

Common misconceptions

“Golden” does not mean indestructible

The gold appearance signals the highest durability tier described by Nintendo Life, not unlimited use. If you need a tool that never wears out, the answer remains limited to the vaulting pole and ladder identified by the community FAQ.

“Lasts much longer” does not mean “never breaks”

Nintendo’s description of Pretty Good Tools is deliberately comparative. Longer life reduces replacement frequency; it does not promise infinite durability. Treating the phrase as a permanent-tool guarantee leads to the same surprise break as relying on a Golden Tool forever.

A tool can be missing without having broken

Durability only describes normal use. Selling, discarding, dropping, or moving an item to storage can also explain why it is not in your pockets. Check your inventory and storage before assuming a permanent tool has somehow failed.

Does the current game version change the answer?

Nintendo’s update history lists version 3.0.3, released April 29, 2026. The surfaced notes for that update concern other fixes and do not announce a change to tool durability. On the available version information, the established rule remains the same: the pole and ladder are the non-breaking exceptions, while the other cited tool groups have finite life.

Updates can change game behavior, so version matters when you compare an old guide with your own island. If Nintendo publishes a future note that specifically changes durability, use that notice as the authority for the affected version rather than assuming every older table remains current.

A quick decision guide

  • Need a tool for rivers or cliffs? Use the vaulting pole or ladder; the cited New Horizons FAQ classifies both as non-breaking.
  • Fishing or catching bugs for a long session? Prefer the longer-lasting versions made with Pretty Good Tools recipes, while still preparing for eventual replacement.
  • Considering a Golden Tool as a lifetime purchase? Do not rely on it as permanent. It is the most durable craftable tier described by Nintendo Life, but it remains consumable.
  • Using a slingshot frequently? Keep a replacement plan because the cited FAQ says it breaks and cannot be upgraded.
  • Playing a different Animal Crossing game? Verify that game’s rules separately; the evidence here is for New Horizons.

Bottom line for New Horizons players

Only two tools meet the everyday meaning of “last forever” in Animal Crossing: New Horizons: the vaulting pole and the ladder. Basic rods and nets break, Pretty Good Tools versions merely extend their life, Golden Tools are durable but still break, and the slingshot has no upgrade that removes its durability limit. Build your inventory around that split and you will know which items require replacements before a trip and which two can be trusted indefinitely.
