Start with Bayonetta, then play Bayonetta 2 and Bayonetta 3. That release-order route is the clearest choice if you want the main action series. Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon is an optional spin-off about a young Cereza, with a different style of play.
Which Bayonetta game should you play first?
For the mainline story and action games, play them in this order:
| # | Preview | Product | Price | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 |
|
Bayonetta -Switch | $59.99 | Buy on Amazon |
| 2 |
|
Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon | $59.00 | Buy on Amazon |
- Bayonetta
- Bayonetta 2
- Bayonetta 3
This is a recommendation based on the series’ release history and relationship between the games, not an order mandated by the publisher. Starting with the first game gives you the straightforward route through the main entries.
Where does Bayonetta Origins fit?
Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon is an optional origins adventure focused on young Cereza and Cheshire. It is not a substitute for the mainline action games: it emphasizes exploration and puzzles and plays differently. Nintendo described it as a “very different style of gameplay” in its 17 March 2023 announcement.

#1 Best Overall
- Witch fell her angel with her smile and beautiful black hair
- The Nintendo Switch is the origin of the action game series that works with the beautiful and brutal witch "Beyonetta"
- The thrill of throwing off your enemy attacks with a single sheet of paper, and the variety of combos will overwhelm your enemy. You can enjoy brilliant and extreme climax action with the angels of attacking
If you are interested in that storybook-like adventure and its distinct gameplay, it can be your first Bayonetta game. If your goal is to experience the main action series, begin with Bayonetta instead.
Which platforms have the Bayonetta games?
Platform availability differs by game. In the official listings reviewed, Nintendo lists Switch editions for all four games, while Steam, PlayStation, and Xbox storefronts list only the first Bayonetta. Check your local store for current availability and edition details; regional catalogs and stock can differ.
Rank #2
- Journey into the Avalon Forest as Cereza—a young Bayonetta—and her very first demon, Cheshire, to gain the power to save her mother
- Control both Cereza and Cheshire simultaneously and coordinate to solve puzzles and beat faeries
- Colorful environments look as if they were painted by hand, and fully narrated story scenes are told through the vibrantly illustrated pages of a storybook
| Game | Platforms in the official listings reviewed | Practical choice |
|---|---|---|
| Bayonetta | Nintendo Switch; PC on Steam; PlayStation 4; Xbox One. PlatinumGames also lists the original Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 releases and later PC and Switch entries. | It has the broadest platform choice. A PC, PS4, or Xbox One copy lets you play the first entry, not the later games. |

| Bayonetta 3 | Nintendo Switch | Nintendo UK lists its release date as 28 October 2022. |

The platform details are supported by the official listings for Bayonetta on Switch, Bayonetta 2 on Switch, Bayonetta 3 on Nintendo Switch, and Bayonetta Origins on Nintendo Switch. The first game is also listed on Steam, PlayStation Store, and Xbox.

Nintendo ended Wii U and Nintendo 3DS eShop purchases on 27 March 2023. Its Bayonetta Wii U pages gave an earlier, title-specific cutoff in 2019 for digital purchases of Bayonetta and Bayonetta 2. Do not rely on buying those games digitally from the Wii U eShop. Nintendo’s notice concerns eShop purchases; it does not establish whether secondhand physical copies are available.

Choose based on your story and hardware priorities
- You want the main series: Play Bayonetta, Bayonetta 2, then Bayonetta 3.
- You are curious about young Cereza or prefer exploration and puzzles: Consider Bayonetta Origins as a separate-style adventure.
- You own a Switch: Nintendo lists Switch editions of all four games, making it the platform with the widest coverage in the listings reviewed.
- You own a PC, PS4, or Xbox One: Those storefront listings provide a way to try the first game, but the reviewed listings do not provide the later main entries on those platforms.
- You are considering a regional or physical edition: Confirm the exact local listing and stock before buying; a listing in one country does not guarantee availability elsewhere.
