Java and Bedrock use different location checks, and the block a golem appears to stand on may not be the block that satisfied the spawn check. For spawn-proofing, check the rules for your edition and test the floor in the same game version.
Why there is no universal block blacklist
“Spawn on” can mean either the block beneath the location that passes the game’s check or the surface where the golem appears. Those are not always the same. A partial or transparent block at the chosen coordinate can make a golem look as though it spawned on that block, even when the supporting block below is what mattered.

Java and Bedrock handle these checks differently. A list of blocks that seems to work in one edition should not be treated as a reliable spawn-proofing list in the other.
Bedrock Edition: support block, clearance, and apparent surface
The Minecraft Wiki tutorial describes village golem spawning as searching a 17×13×17 area around the village center. For a chosen coordinate, it reports a solid block underneath and a 2×4×2 clearance volume extending west, upward, and north; that volume must not contain solid or full blocks. If a partial or transparent block occupies the chosen coordinate, the golem may appear on top of it. The tutorial gives bottom slabs, carpets, and glass as examples. That explains why simply placing a block often described as non-spawnable may not prevent golems from appearing there: the support and clearance conditions around the selected coordinate still matter. The examples describe apparent spawning behavior, not a universal guarantee that those blocks always allow or prevent spawning in every Bedrock version.
Java Edition: evaluate the valid surface and space above it
The same Minecraft Wiki tutorial describes Java’s chosen horizontal location as using the highest valid surface in the spawn volume. It says the spawning block must be solid, with air or water above it, and notes that buttons, pressure plates, and other non-solid blocks can obstruct the conditions for summoning. These details are not interchangeable with Bedrock’s check.
The cited material does not establish that every slab, carpet, glass block, leaf block, or other commonly discussed block always blocks or permits iron golem spawning in every Java version. Avoid relying on a categorical list without confirming it in your own edition and version.

- Confirm your edition and version. Use the Java or Bedrock rules for the game you are actually playing; do not transfer a floor design between them by assumption.
- Inspect the whole location. Check the supporting block, the coordinate where the golem appears, and the clearance above and around that point. In Bedrock, the tutorial’s described clearance volume is 2×4×2.
- Test the proposed floor in the same setup. Try the design in the same edition and version, with the same surrounding support and clearance. A block name alone does not establish that a location is spawn-proof.
- Check technical documentation in context. Microsoft documents configurable spawn-rule components for blocks that spawning can occur on and blocks that can prevent it, and identifies village-specific spawning as relevant to iron golems. This is documentation for configurable spawn rules, not a complete vanilla blacklist. See Microsoft’s Bedrock spawn-rules documentation.
Natural spawning is different from building a golem
Player-created iron golems use a separate mechanic: Minecraft.net says to place four iron blocks in a T shape, then put a carved pumpkin or jack o’lantern on top. That recipe does not tell you which surfaces allow natural village spawning. Minecraft.net’s iron golem article.
