After defeating Godrick, head into Liurnia of the Lakes and make your way to Raya Lucaria Academy. Its boss, Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon, is the usual next major fight. You can explore elsewhere first: Elden Ring does not lock you into a fixed boss order.
Where to go after Godrick
From Godrick’s arena, continue through the opening beyond the boss room to reach Liurnia of the Lakes. Follow the route toward Raya Lucaria Academy, the major dungeon in the middle of the lake. The straightforward early-game progression is Godrick, then the Academy and Rennala. Bandai Namco’s early-game guidance likewise suggests Limgrave, then Liurnia, then Caelid.

Use Sites of Grace to orient yourself
Key Sites of Grace leave a faint golden trail pointing generally toward important locations, including legacy dungeons and major bosses. Treat it as a directional hint rather than a strict quest marker: you are free to take detours or pursue another region.
Should you fight Rennala now?
Rennala is the natural next target if you want to continue along the usual early progression. If the Academy or its boss feels too difficult, leave and build strength through exploration before returning. Bandai Namco explicitly advises that it is fine to retreat from a difficult boss or explore an area without fighting.

Useful preparation while exploring
- Visit churches to find Sacred Tears, which improve the amount restored by your flasks.
- Collect Golden Seeds to increase the number of flask uses.
- Explore tunnels for smithing stones to upgrade your weapon.
These are practical ways to prepare; you do not have to clear every nearby area before entering the Academy.
What comes after Rennala?
A common next major objective is Starscourge Radahn at Redmane Castle in Caelid. The route described by Xbox Wire’s progression guide leads from Rennala toward Caelid and Radahn. The Radahn Festival can also be activated by reaching Altus Plateau and resting at a Site of Grace there, so defeating Rennala first is not a requirement for starting that encounter.

Can you choose a different route?
Yes. Elden Ring is open-world, and you can visit other accessible areas or return to a boss later. The publisher’s suggested Limgrave-to-Liurnia-to-Caelid order is a useful early-game route, not a mandatory sequence; enemy difficulty varies by region. If you would rather explore than take on the next major boss, do that and come back when you feel ready.
