For most Windows 11 users, install the latest BlueStacks 5 release and start with an Android 11 64-bit instance. As of August 18, 2026, that release is BlueStacks 5.22.250, released July 17, 2026. Choose Android 13 Beta only when a game or app specifically requires it; use Pie or Nougat for compatibility with particular older games and applications.

The key distinction is that BlueStacks 5 is the Windows application, while Android 11, Android 13, Pie, and Nougat are separate Android environments you can create inside it.

Quick answer

The best general-purpose setup for Windows 11 is:

  • Application: the latest BlueStacks 5 release, currently BlueStacks 5.22.250 as of August 18, 2026.
  • Android environment: Android 11 64-bit.
  • Graphics: begin with Vulkan & OpenGL, then test OpenGL Only if a game has rendering problems.
  • Hyper-V: do not disable it automatically. Recent BlueStacks 5 releases support configurations with Hyper-V enabled or disabled.

Use Android 13 Beta when Android 11 reports that an app is incompatible or the game explicitly requires Android 13. Use Pie 64-bit, Nougat 64-bit, or Nougat 32-bit only when a game’s compatibility needs justify an older Android environment.

BlueStacks 5 versus BlueStacks 4 on Windows 11

BlueStacks 5 is the right choice for a normal Windows 11 installation. It is the actively maintained Windows product and continues to receive fixes involving Android 11, Android 13, Pie, graphics, controllers, app crashes, Windows 11 24H2, and remote access. The current 5.22 release notes document those ongoing changes.

BlueStacks 4 is a legacy exception, not a general recommendation. Keep it in consideration only if a specific older game or workflow depends on behavior that changed in BlueStacks 5. Otherwise, an old BlueStacks 4 installer brings avoidable compatibility, support, and update drawbacks.

BlueStacks describes version 5 as more resource-efficient, but that is a first-party product claim rather than an independent benchmark proving that it is faster on every computer. The practical reason to choose it is current support and compatibility work, not a guaranteed frame-rate advantage.

Do not confuse the BlueStacks version with the Android version

Installing BlueStacks 5 does not determine which Android version every game will use. Through Multi-instance Manager, one BlueStacks installation can contain multiple Android environments.

The selected instance affects:

  • Android API and application compatibility.
  • Whether the app expects 32-bit or 64-bit libraries.
  • Available graphics features, including Vulkan support.
  • Known optimizations or compatibility instructions for a particular game.
  • How much troubleshooting may be required.

BlueStacks documents Android Nougat, Pie, Android 11, and Android 13 Beta as available instance choices, although the exact choices shown can depend on the current product and installer. See the BlueStacks 5 Android-version guide for the current list.

Which Android instance should you choose?

Instance Best use Main trade-off
Android 11 64-bit Default choice for most Windows 11 users and modern games Not guaranteed to support every newest app or every game-specific configuration
Android 13 Beta Games or apps that specifically require Android 13 Beta status means compatibility and stability can vary
Pie 64-bit Games known to work better on Android 9, or games with Android 11 graphics or login problems Older Android base
Nougat 64-bit Older software that requires Android 7.1.2 with a 64-bit environment Too old for many current applications
Nougat 32-bit Legacy applications that are 32-bit-only or refuse to run on 64-bit Android Limited modern app compatibility

Android 11 64-bit: the best default

Android 11 64-bit is the sensible starting point when the game does not name a required Android version. It provides a relatively modern Android environment, supports 64-bit applications, and is the most useful general-purpose choice for current Windows 11 systems.

It is also the safest starting point for users who keep Hyper-V, Windows Sandbox, WSL, or other Windows virtualization features enabled. That does not mean every game will run perfectly on Android 11. It means you should test it before moving to older or beta instances.

Android 13 Beta: use it for a specific requirement

Android 13 is the newest Android option listed for BlueStacks 5, but BlueStacks still labels it Beta. Newer does not automatically mean faster, more stable, or better for every game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Android 13 Beta when:

  • The game explicitly requires Android 13.
  • Android 11 says the app is incompatible.
  • The game’s official or well-established BlueStacks instructions identify Android 13 as the required instance.

To create it, open Multi-instance Manager → New Instance → Fresh Instance → Android 13 (Beta) → Next → Download → Start. The official Android 13 instructions provide the current workflow.

Keep Android 11 or Pie available rather than replacing a working instance. BlueStacks’ 5.22 notes include Android 13 crash and compatibility fixes for games such as League of Legends: Wild Rift and Marvel Contest of Champions, but game support can change with new releases.

Pie 64-bit: a useful compatibility fallback

Pie 64-bit remains worthwhile when a game is known to run best on Android 9, or when Android 11 or Android 13 produces graphical, login, or launch problems. It is also a useful route to Vulkan without immediately moving to the Android 13 Beta environment.

BlueStacks lists Vulkan support for Pie, Android 11, and Android 13, but not Nougat. A game-specific support article should take priority over this general rule.

Nougat 64-bit and 32-bit: legacy choices

Nougat 64-bit is for older applications that require Android 7.1.2 and a 64-bit environment. Nougat 32-bit is for genuinely legacy software that is 32-bit-only or refuses to install on a 64-bit Android instance.

Do not select Nougat because it sounds lighter or because an old guide calls it the fastest option. Its primary benefit is compatibility with older software. Newer apps increasingly require 64-bit support and newer Android APIs.

Best BlueStacks choice by user type

  • Most gamers: latest BlueStacks 5 with Android 11 64-bit.
  • A game requiring Android 13: Android 13 Beta in a separate instance.
  • An older game with known Android 9 support: Pie 64-bit.
  • A 32-bit-only legacy app: Nougat 32-bit.
  • An older 64-bit app: Nougat 64-bit.
  • Hyper-V, WSL, or Windows Sandbox users: current BlueStacks 5 with a Hyper-V-compatible configuration, preferably starting with Android 11.
  • Windows 11 24H2 or Remote Desktop users: use the latest BlueStacks 5 release rather than an old installer. Version 5.22 includes fixes related to Windows 11 24H2 and reconnecting through RDP, but that does not guarantee support for every remote or virtual machine setup.
  • Multiple-instance users: create only the Android environments you need and tune each instance according to the total RAM, CPU, GPU, game, and resolution available.

Does Windows 11 Home or Pro matter?

Windows 11 Home can run BlueStacks; Windows 11 Pro is not a universal requirement. The more important variables are hardware virtualization, enabled Windows hypervisor features, administrator access, graphics drivers, and the BlueStacks configuration.

Pro and Enterprise editions are more likely to be used with Hyper-V, Windows Sandbox, and related virtualization tools. That can affect how BlueStacks runs, but it does not make Pro automatically better for gaming.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On Windows 11 24H2, use the current BlueStacks release. Recent release notes specifically address 24H2 and RDP-related issues, so an old BlueStacks version is a poor baseline for troubleshooting.

Does Hyper-V need to be disabled?

No. BlueStacks states that version 5.20 and later can run with Hyper-V enabled or disabled when the relevant requirements and configuration are satisfied.

Keep Hyper-V enabled when you use

  • Windows Sandbox.
  • WSL2 or virtualization-based development tools.
  • Other virtual machines or applications that depend on the Windows hypervisor.

Install the current BlueStacks 5 build and use its Hyper-V-compatible configuration where offered. If it does not launch, try a restart, run BlueStacks as administrator, and use the Hyper-V diagnostic guidance.

When disabling Hyper-V may be reasonable

Consider disabling it only if you do not need Windows hypervisor features and a particular older instance or workflow works better without it. Disabling Hyper-V can affect Windows Sandbox, WSL2, virtual machines, Virtual Machine Platform, Windows Hypervisor Platform, and other virtualization-dependent software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The label Hyper-V disabled can also be misleading. Virtual Machine Platform, Core Isolation, WSL2, or another Windows component may still cause the Windows hypervisor to load. Do not treat disabling one checkbox as a universal performance fix.

Check hardware virtualization before troubleshooting

Hardware virtualization is important for a good BlueStacks experience and may be required by newer configurations. Intel systems generally expose Intel VT-x; AMD systems may call the setting AMD-V or SVM.

  1. Open Task Manager.
  2. Choose Performance → CPU.
  3. Check the Virtualization field.
  4. If it says Disabled, restart into UEFI or BIOS.
  5. Enable the manufacturer-specific virtualization setting, such as Intel Virtualization Technology or SVM/AMD-V.
  6. Save the change and restart Windows.
  7. Open BlueStacks again.

BIOS menus differ by motherboard and laptop manufacturer, so there is no single reliable menu path for every PC. BlueStacks’ Windows 11 virtualization guide covers the process.

Official minimums versus a practical Windows 11 setup

For the Hyper-V-enabled Windows 10 and 11 configuration, BlueStacks lists Windows 10 version 1903 or later or Windows 11, an Intel or AMD processor, at least 4 GB of RAM, at least 5 GB of free storage, administrator access, current graphics drivers, Hyper-V enabled, and membership in the relevant Hyper-V Administrators group. See the official requirements for configuration details.

Those are minimums, not a guarantee of a smooth experience in a demanding game. As practical guidance:

  • 8 GB of system RAM: a more realistic floor for Windows 11 plus one BlueStacks instance.
  • 16 GB: preferable for demanding games, several instances, or multitasking.
  • SSD: useful for startup, instance creation, updates, and game loading.
  • Graphics: a recent integrated or dedicated GPU with current drivers is preferable.
  • Storage: leave room beyond the emulator itself for game data, updates, Android images, and Windows.

The 8 GB and 16 GB figures are practical guidance, not BlueStacks’ official performance guarantee. Actual results depend on the game, resolution, graphics API, CPU, GPU, background applications, and number of instances.

How to install the right Android instance

  1. Download BlueStacks 5 from the official BlueStacks page.
  2. Run the installer and approve administrator elevation if Windows requests it.
  3. Open BlueStacks 5 after installation.
  4. Open Multi-instance Manager from the side toolbar.
  5. Select New Instance.
  6. Choose Fresh Instance.
  7. Select Android 11, Pie, Nougat, or Android 13 Beta.
  8. Configure the available options, such as CPU cores, memory, resolution, ABI, performance mode, DPI, and instance count.
  9. Click Download.
  10. When the image finishes downloading, click Start.
  11. Sign in to Google Play and install the game.

Create Android 11 first. Add Android 13, Pie, or Nougat as a second instance only when the game’s compatibility requires it. This preserves a known-good environment and avoids downloading every Android image unnecessarily.

Graphics and performance settings

BlueStacks offers Vulkan & OpenGL, marked Recommended, and OpenGL Only. Vulkan is available on Pie, Android 11, and Android 13 instances according to BlueStacks’ graphics settings documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use this troubleshooting order:

  1. Start with Vulkan & OpenGL.
  2. Update the GPU driver from the relevant hardware manufacturer.
  3. Restart BlueStacks.
  4. If the game shows a black screen, missing textures, crashes, or visual artifacts, test OpenGL Only.
  5. If one instance fails, test the game on Android 11 or Pie instead of changing the entire installation.
  6. Check the game-specific BlueStacks support article before changing advanced settings.

Vulkan is not a promise of higher FPS. The renderer that gives the best result is the one that is stable and compatible with the particular game and driver.

For multiple instances, run only what you need, reduce assigned CPU cores and RAM when multitasking, avoid assigning all physical memory to BlueStacks, use Eco mode or a lower frame-rate target where appropriate, and close heavy browsers or other applications. There is no universal CPU or RAM allocation: the correct values depend on your total system resources, game, resolution, and instance count.

Troubleshooting by symptom

BlueStacks will not launch

  1. Check virtualization in Task Manager → Performance → CPU.
  2. Confirm whether Hyper-V or other Windows hypervisor features are enabled.
  3. Restart Windows after changing Windows features or BIOS settings.
  4. Update graphics drivers.
  5. Try Run as administrator.
  6. Update from an old BlueStacks build to the current release.
  7. Use BlueStacks’ Hyper-V launch troubleshooting steps.

The game says it is incompatible

Try the instances in this order:

  1. Android 11 64-bit.
  2. Android 13 Beta if the app requires Android 13.
  3. Pie 64-bit.
  4. Nougat 64-bit or Nougat 32-bit only when the app is demonstrably legacy or 32-bit-only.

Also confirm that the game is available in your country and Google Play account, and check the developer’s device and emulator restrictions. Changing Android instances does not bypass an emulator policy, anti-cheat system, or account restriction.

Hyper-V causes unexpected behavior

Update BlueStacks first. Recent documentation supports running BlueStacks 5.20 and later with Hyper-V enabled or disabled, but individual Windows feature combinations can still cause launch or performance problems. If you need WSL2, Sandbox, or virtual machines, do not disable the Windows hypervisor merely because an old guide recommends it.

A black screen, crash, or broken graphics appears

Update the GPU driver, restart BlueStacks, and switch between Vulkan & OpenGL and OpenGL Only. Then test the same game in Android 11 or Pie. If only Android 13 fails, treat that as an instance-specific compatibility problem; Android 13 remains Beta.

BlueStacks stopped working after a Windows update

Restart Windows, update BlueStacks, update the graphics driver, and recheck virtualization. Windows 11 24H2 users should especially avoid relying on old installers because current BlueStacks release notes include fixes for 24H2 and RDP-related behavior.

Several instances consume too many resources

Stop unused instances, lower per-instance CPU and memory allocations, use Eco mode where appropriate, close background applications, and keep the instances on an SSD. Do not allocate every available CPU core or byte of RAM to BlueStacks; Windows and the game still need resources.

Alternatives if BlueStacks is not the right fit

Google Play Games for PC may be better if you only want officially supported Android games and do not need broad APK installation or emulator features. It is not a general replacement for every Android app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Android Studio Emulator is more appropriate for Android developers, QA, and app testing. It is usually excessive for a casual gaming setup.

Other consumer Android emulators may appeal to users who dislike BlueStacks’ interface, advertising, or resource behavior, but the best alternative depends on the specific game and current compatibility. Do not assume a different emulator will bypass a game’s device, account, or anti-cheat restrictions.

BlueStacks itself is free to download, but a free installation does not necessarily mean an entirely interruption-free experience. BlueStacks offers the optional BlueStacks Prime membership for benefits including ad removal, rewards, discounts, and priority support. Those benefits should not be interpreted as a guaranteed FPS or latency improvement.

Final verdict

Install the latest BlueStacks 5 release for Windows 11 and create an Android 11 64-bit instance first. It is the best default for most users, not a universal guarantee of the highest FPS or perfect compatibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Move to Android 13 Beta only for an Android 13 requirement or a documented compatibility problem. Keep Pie 64-bit as a mature fallback, and use Nougat 64-bit or 32-bit for specific older applications. Leave Hyper-V enabled when other Windows tools need it, and troubleshoot the instance, renderer, drivers, and virtualization configuration before downgrading BlueStacks or disabling Windows features.
