Choose by the role you want to play: Tank for frontline defense, Cleric for healing, Bard for support, Fighter or Rogue for melee damage, Ranger for ranged physical damage, Mage for magic damage, or Summoner for a flexible summon-based concept. These are role-fit recommendations, not a current power ranking.
Why there is no reliable “best” archetype ranking
Ashes of Creation’s official Steam listing describes the game as being in active alpha testing, with combat and archetype systems still in development and subject to balance adjustments. It confirms that players choose among eight archetypes and customize their abilities, but it does not identify a strongest archetype or publish comparative performance for PvE or PvP. Steam’s Ashes of Creation listing also cautions that Early Access is a testing experience rather than a finished product.
That means a claim that one archetype is “best” needs to specify the activity, build, and game version behind it. No reliable current comparative figures for solo or group PvE, small-scale PvP, or large-scale PvP are established here.
Choose an archetype by the role you want
The role descriptions below come from Ashes 101’s archetype guide, a secondary source rather than an official class-ranking page. Use them to narrow your choice by playstyle, not to infer which archetype is strongest.
#1 Best Overall
| Archetype | Role described by the guide | Good fit if you want to… |
|---|---|---|
| Tank | Main tank | Hold the frontline and focus on defense. |
| Cleric | Main healer | Make healing your primary contribution. |
| Bard | Support, including buffs, debuffs, and off-healing | Enable allies rather than focus solely on damage or healing. |
| Fighter | Melee damage | Deal damage at close range. |
| Rogue | Melee damage | Deal damage at close range; the available evidence does not establish how it compares with Fighter. |
| Ranger | Ranged physical damage | Deal physical damage from range. |
| Mage | Magic damage | Focus on magic damage. |
| Summoner | Intended to flex among roles through summons | Try a summon-based concept with role flexibility; the guide does not establish the practical limits of that flexibility. |
What to check before following a tier list
If your goal is the strongest option rather than a preferred role, look for a comparison that matches the content you plan to play. A ranking without those details may not answer your question.
- Activity: Is the comparison for solo PvE, group PvE, small-scale PvP, or large-scale PvP?
- Role contribution: Does it compare damage, survivability, healing, crowd control, and support utility rather than treating damage as the only measure?
- Build and patch: Does it identify the primary and secondary archetype combination, equipment, and game version tested?
- Evidence: Is it grounded in official patch information, reproducible current-build testing, or clearly attributed community observations?
With combat and archetype balance still changing, treat a community meta report as a snapshot of its stated build and patch—not a lasting verdict.

How much weight to give secondary-archetype and gear advice
Ashes 101 describes a fixed primary archetype and a secondary archetype selected later, with the secondary augmenting primary skills rather than granting its own skill set. The guide says the secondary is selected at level 25 and can be changed through a trainer for a cost or task, but it also indicates that the change process was not settled in its account. The official Steam listing cited above does not confirm these details. Verify current official patch notes or in-game documentation before relying on the level, respec process, or cost.
The same guide says weapons and armor are broadly selectable, while archetype passives encourage preferred equipment. Its example is that a Tank using medium rather than heavy armor gives up armor and health benefits. This is secondary-source guidance, so check current-build mechanics before using it to plan equipment.
