Which Cloud YouTube Streaming Service Supports SRT Input?

Google Cloud Live Stream API can receive an SRT contribution feed; send its output to YouTube separately using a supported ingest protocol such as RTMP.

Google Cloud Live Stream API accepts SRT input. YouTube’s documented direct-ingest protocols are RTMP, RTMPS, HLS and DASH—not SRT. To get an SRT contribution feed to YouTube, send it to Google Cloud Live Stream API, then distribute the cloud output to YouTube using a supported protocol such as RTMP. That is a two-hop workflow, not direct SRT ingest by YouTube.

What supports SRT—and what does not

Service or hop Documented protocol support What that means
Google Cloud Live Stream API input SRT and RTMP It can receive an SRT contribution feed. Google Cloud also transcodes input to HLS or DASH outputs, which are saved to Cloud Storage.
Google Cloud remote distribution SRT or RTMP Google documents remote SRT distribution using MPEG-TS and RTMP distribution using FLV. RTMP is the relevant documented option for the YouTube leg described here.
YouTube Live third-party ingest RTMP, RTMPS, HLS and DASH SRT is not included in YouTube’s documented ingest protocol list, so do not assume an SRT sender can connect directly to a YouTube ingest endpoint.

These distinctions are described in Google Cloud’s Live Stream API overview and remote distribution documentation, and YouTube’s protocol comparison. Protocol support and endpoint settings can change; check the current configuration in both services before building a production workflow.

How an SRT-to-YouTube cloud workflow works

  1. Choose an SRT-capable contribution encoder. The device or software sending the source feed must support SRT and be configured to send to the Google Cloud input endpoint. If it cannot send SRT, this workflow cannot receive its feed as SRT.
  2. Configure Google Cloud Live Stream API to receive the contribution. Use its SRT input endpoint and the input settings required by your encoder. Google recommends SRT over RTMP for its input endpoint when possible, citing recovery from packet drops, forward error correction, multiple audio elementary streams and higher bandwidth.
  3. Set up the downstream distribution separately. Configure the cloud output or remote distribution to reach your YouTube live event using a protocol YouTube supports. For the documented RTMP route, Google’s remote distribution uses FLV; YouTube accepts RTMP-family ingest.
  4. Use the correct YouTube event endpoint and stream key. Select the ingest protocol supported by that stream key and endpoint, then enter the matching destination details in the cloud distribution configuration. Do not put an SRT URL into a YouTube RTMP/RTMPS destination field.
  5. Test both hops before relying on the stream. Confirm that the encoder’s SRT feed reaches Google Cloud, that the cloud service produces the expected output, and that YouTube receives and displays it. A successful SRT connection to Google Cloud alone does not prove the second hop is configured correctly.

Choose the YouTube output protocol for the job

RTMPS for a typical low-latency stream

YouTube recommends RTMPS for ordinary low-latency live streaming. It is the straightforward choice for the cloud-to-YouTube leg when your output and event configuration support it.

HLS when HDR or codec requirements call for it

YouTube documents HLS as an option for HDR or codecs not supported by RTMP. HLS sends video in segments, so it generally has higher latency than RTMP-family ingest. YouTube’s protocol comparison also describes HLS and DASH as segment-based protocols that tend to have higher latency than RTMP-family ingest.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Check the whole chain, not just the SRT input

  • Protocol compatibility: the source-to-cloud and cloud-to-YouTube legs are separate connections with separate protocol requirements.
  • Latency: output protocol and processing affect end-to-end delay; do not treat a successful SRT input as proof of low latency at the viewer.
  • Codec and HDR needs: confirm that the selected YouTube ingest path supports the output format you need.
  • Transcoding: Google Cloud’s overview describes transcoding to HLS or DASH. Confirm that the configured output format fits the chosen YouTube route.
  • Encoder capability: the contribution encoder or transcoder must support the selected input protocol—in this case, SRT.

Common problems and how to diagnose them

The encoder cannot connect to YouTube using SRT

YouTube’s documented ingest list does not include SRT. Send SRT to a compatible intermediary such as Google Cloud Live Stream API, then configure a separate downstream distribution using a YouTube-supported protocol.

Google Cloud receives SRT, but YouTube shows no incoming video

Treat this as a downstream configuration issue until proven otherwise. Check the cloud remote-distribution destination, the selected YouTube event’s endpoint and stream key, and that the protocol matches on both ends. Google documents RTMP remote distribution in FLV; YouTube documents RTMP-family ingest.

The source cannot send SRT

The SRT workflow requires an encoder or transcoder that supports SRT. If your source only supports another protocol, configure a compatible input path instead of assuming Google Cloud can convert a protocol it never receives.

Viewer delay is higher than expected

Check which protocol is used on the YouTube leg. HLS and DASH are segment-based and tend to have higher latency than RTMP-family ingest; YouTube recommends RTMPS for typical low-latency live streams.

The cloud input works, but the output format is unsuitable

Review the configured output and the YouTube event’s ingest requirements together. Google Cloud’s overview describes HLS or DASH output, while its remote-distribution documentation separately describes RTMP and SRT to remote endpoints. Do not assume every output mode is interchangeable; configure the documented remote-distribution route you intend to use.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube channel playing uploaded recordings rather than forwarding a live SRT contribution feed, StreamNeo is a different kind of cloud service. It plays uploaded videos and playlists; it does not accept SRT input or go live from a camera. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer can stay off, and YouTube stream drops trigger automatic recovery. StreamNeo plays uploads as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot rather than quality tiers. The first day is free with no card; the Monthly price is $9.99 per month. Learn about StreamNeo or start your free day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Google Cloud Live Stream API send SRT directly to YouTube?

Google documents SRT as an input and as a remote-distribution option, but the described YouTube route uses a supported YouTube ingest protocol such as RTMP. Verify the current service configuration for your chosen output.

Is SRT the same as RTMPS?

No. They are distinct protocols. In this workflow, SRT carries the contribution feed to Google Cloud, while RTMPS or another supported protocol can carry the downstream stream to YouTube.
