No single Galarian bird is the strongest in every context. Galarian Articuno, Galarian Zapdos, and Galarian Moltres each have different types, abilities, and signature moves, and Pokémon’s own support team says a Pokémon’s strength in the video games depends heavily on how it is trained and on the challenge it faces. The useful answer is therefore conditional: first decide which game, format, or mode you mean, then judge each bird by its role in that setting.
Why the question has no universal answer
“Strongest” means different things in each part of the Pokémon franchise. In the video games, a Pokémon’s power is shaped by its level, stats, Ability, moves, held item, and teammates, and by the opponent it meets. Pokémon Support’s article “What is the strongest Pokémon?” (updated January 30, 2026) makes this point directly: “In the video game, it depends a lot on how you train your Pokémon.” The same article adds that the most important consideration is “what kind of challenge you’re facing.”
The same caution applies across other products. A card’s strength in the Pokémon Trading Card Game, a Pokémon’s role in Pokémon GO, and a Pokémon’s performance in ranked singles or doubles are separate questions. Any ranking that does not name its format is measuring something other than what the reader asked.
What each Galarian bird brings
The official species pages for all three birds list the same basic facts: a Galarian form, a dual type that includes Flying, an Ability, and one signature move that is tied to that bird’s identity. Their official descriptions do not include a comparative verdict, so the differences below are descriptive rather than a ranking.

| Pokémon | Type | Ability | Signature move (official description) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Galarian Articuno | Psychic/Flying | Competitive | Freezing Glare, a special Psychic-type move that may freeze the target |
| Galarian Zapdos | Fighting/Flying | Defiant | Thunderous Kick, a physical Fighting-type move that lowers the target’s Defense |
| Galarian Moltres | Dark/Flying | Berserk | Fiery Wrath, a special Dark-type move that may make opponents flinch |
Galarian Articuno
Articuno’s Psychic typing and its special Freezing Glare give it a special-attack identity. Its freeze effect is a possibility, not a guarantee, and it is official mechanics rather than proof of superiority. Its Competitive Ability is the one most likely to shape how it is built in a team, which is why it is worth reading the official Ability description before comparing it with the other two.
Galarian Zapdos
Zapdos is the physical attacker of the trio. Thunderous Kick is a physical Fighting-type move, and its effect of lowering the target’s Defense can help teammates that rely on physical damage. Defiant is its Ability, and the official entry is the reference for how it works.

Galarian Moltres
Moltres combines a Dark typing with a special Dark-type move, Fiery Wrath, which may cause flinching. Its Berserk Ability is the third distinct tool in the set. Because flinch and status-style effects depend on turn order and the opponent’s speed, Moltres is best judged in a team that protects it or sets up around it.

- Name the game or mode. Sword and Shield, Scarlet and Violet, Pokémon GO, and the Trading Card Game each have different rules and different questions of strength.
- Name the format. In a video game, separate singles from doubles and casual play from ranked or official online competition.
- Check the current rules. Eligibility depends on the regulation in force, not on a Pokémon’s general popularity.
- Decide the bird’s role. Ask whether you want a special attacker, a physical attacker, or a bird that fits a specific team plan.
- Compare matchups and team support. Type interactions, the moves your partners cover, and the challenge you expect all change the result.
- Test the configuration. Training, moves, Ability, and held item change what a bird can do in practice, so compare built sets rather than bare species.
Competitive eligibility in Scarlet and Violet
Pokémon’s official Regulation Set I page (Pokémon Scarlet and Violet News, Regulation Set I) lists Articuno (Galarian Form), Zapdos (Galarian Form), and Moltres (Galarian Form) as eligible Pokémon. Its rule text allows Pokémon obtained in Scarlet or Violet, including the named DLC, or transferred from Pokémon HOME, subject to the set’s restrictions. Those regulations govern ranked battles and official online competitions.
That page describes one named regulation set. It does not establish which set is active today, and it does not rank the birds against each other. For a current competitive decision, check the rules page for the regulation you plan to play and then look for format-specific results or usage data before drawing a conclusion.

Where to find the birds and related collectibles
The official bird pages place all three in the Crown Tundra and the Sword and Shield Expansion Pass, and they note that additional games or systems may be required and sold separately. Check the current edition, Expansion Pass requirements, and availability on Nintendo’s and Pokémon’s storefronts before you buy. For collectors, the Pokémon TCG: Sword & Shield—Chilling Reign set includes cards for all three Galarian birds, as listed in The Pokémon Company International’s Chilling Reign card checklist. A card’s presence in a set says nothing about how strong the bird is in the games.
What the evidence does and does not show
The official sources establish each bird’s type, Ability, and signature move, and they establish that strength depends on training and challenge. They do not provide a win rate, usage figure, or battle-performance comparison for these three birds, so no percentage or ranking is attributed here. A fair conclusion for any reader is that the answer depends on the format and the team around the bird.
