Bentley says the Retro R8 is the mouse on his desk. The ranking combines price-to-weight value with PC Gamer review scores, so it is a playful comparison of reviewed mice—not a universal measure of gaming performance or comfort.
What the price-to-weight ranking says
Bentley’s question is which mouse offers the best “price-to-gram ratio.” His answer is the Glorious Model O Eternal: it has a listed MSRP of $40, weighs 55 g, and scores 93.5% overall. The 8BitDo Retro R8 comes second at 92%, with a listed MSRP of $50 and a weight of 77 g. Bentley writes: “Second place is the 8BitDo Retro R8, which coincidentally happens to be the mouse I keep on my desk.”
The result rewards a combination of favorable price-to-weight value and a strong PC Gamer review score. It does not mean the heaviest mouse is best, or that the winning mouse is the best fit for every player.
How Bentley calculated the “James score”
For each mouse in the comparison, Bentley used its MSRP and weight to calculate grams per dollar, then mapped the mice onto a 0–100 price-to-weight value scale. He averaged that percentage with PC Gamer’s review score to produce the final score. Because one input is a PC Gamer review score, the comparison includes only mice reviewed by the publication. The figures below are from James Bentley’s PC Gamer comparison (2026), not an independent study; the MSRP figures are the article’s inputs, not verified current store prices.

Why the ranking favors some mice over others
Low cost per gram helps
The value calculation rewards mice that deliver more grams for each dollar of MSRP. That explains how the 90 g Protoarc EM25 reaches 100% on weight value despite its 40% review score, leaving it with a 70% overall result. The high weight-value component cannot erase a weak review score, but it still contributes substantially.

Ultralight mice can lose value points
A mouse that is light may be desirable for fast movement, but low mass also means fewer grams per dollar under this formula. The Corsair Sabre V2 Pro Ultralight, at 36 g, has a 35% weight-value score; the 43 g Pulsar X3 Crazylight Mini has 10%. Bentley acknowledges that the method can penalize ultralight mice. That is a limitation of the chosen value metric, not evidence that lightweight designs perform poorly.
How to use the result as a buyer
- If you want the highest score by this formula: the Glorious Model O Eternal leads the listed comparison at 93.5%.
- If you want the mouse Bentley says he uses: the 8BitDo Retro R8 is second at 92%.
- If low weight matters most: do not use cost per gram as a stand-in for suitability. Compare the listed weights and review scores, then prioritize the handling and features you want.
- If you are checking prices: treat the table’s dollar figures as the comparison’s MSRP inputs, not live retail quotes.
The source describes the MCHOSE K7 V2 Ultra+ (80.5%) and MCHOSE L7 Pro+ (80%) as joint third in its narrative, but the displayed scores differ by half a point. By the displayed figures, the K7 V2 Ultra+ is third and the L7 Pro+ is fourth.

What the score cannot tell you
The “James score” is a custom average, not a standardized measure of quality, ergonomics, or gaming performance. Its value ranking depends on the mice selected, their listed MSRP and weight, and PC Gamer’s review scores. It says nothing by itself about whether a shape fits your hand, how a mouse feels in use, or whether its features suit your games. Read it as a compact way to compare price, weight, and review scores within Bentley’s reviewed-mouse selection—not as a definitive shopping verdict.
