The rollback is substantial, especially for worker openings and resource values, but it is not a reversal of every change: the contemporaneous announcement says the updated map pool and bug fixes remain. Blizzard planned several days of PTR testing before a live release; the notes do not establish whether that release has since happened.
Why Blizzard is rolling back the redesign
Blizzard said it wanted to try something new, particularly with workers, and give the resulting meta time to develop so it could gather more accurate feedback. The company ultimately decided that reverting most of the balance changes was the best way to respond to critical feedback on patch 5.0.16 while preparing new changes for a later update. In the official 5.0.17 PTR notes, Blizzard wrote: “Our intention was to try something new, particularly with workers, and needed time to let the meta develop in order to ensure the most accurate feedback was being considered.”
The rollback returns balance toward patch 5.0.15, whose official notes document changes for Zerg, Protoss and Terran, as well as bug fixes. The 5.0.17 announcement describes the move as a rollback of “most balance changes,” not all changes or all content. A contemporaneous forum post sharing the announcement says the updated map pool and bug fixes are retained.
Economy and opening pace: the clearest numerical changes
The 5.0.17 PTR notes specify these resource and starting-worker values. They are game settings, not player-population statistics.

| Setting | 5.0.16 value | 5.0.17 PTR value |
|---|---|---|
| Starting workers | 8 | 12 |
| Large mineral patch | 1,600 | 1,800 |
| Small mineral patch | 1,100 | 900 |
| Default Vespene geyser | 2,000 | 2,250 |
| Default gas per base | 4,500 | 5,000 |
These are the patch values listed in Blizzard’s 2026 5.0.17 PTR notes. The worker count returns to 12, and the notes specify higher values for large mineral patches, geysers and default gas per base, alongside a lower value for small mineral patches.
Race and unit balance: a return to 5.0.15, not a clean slate
The rollback applies across Zerg, Protoss and Terran balance. Blizzard’s 5.0.17 notes are the reference for what is being reverted; the 5.0.15 notes document the earlier baseline and its race-specific changes. Because Blizzard says “most” balance changes are being rolled back, it would be inaccurate to assume every intervening unit adjustment has been reversed. Check the individual entries in the 5.0.17 notes rather than treating the rollback as a complete restoration of every detail.

PTR testing and what Blizzard says comes next
Blizzard said it planned a few days of PTR bug testing before pushing 5.0.17 to live. The 5.0.17 notes describe a test-realm build, so they do not by themselves confirm a live deployment; the available announcement does not establish whether that push has since occurred.
In a public Reddit comment about the PTR, Blizzard representative Blizz_Elliott said: “We can’t share timing yet for when the next PTR will go live but it is already being worked on.” The representative also said reverting was the best option for addressing critical feedback on the patch while focusing new changes as part of the patch after 5.0.17. Blizzard therefore confirmed that further work was underway, but gave no date for the next PTR.
