For most players seeking a classic Gothic RPG with its expansion included, start with Gothic II: Gold Edition. If you want the first game’s world with updated presentation and revised controls, consider Gothic 1 Remake instead. There is no evidence-based universal winner: the right choice depends on which version you want and how comfortable you are with the series’ distinctive design.
Choose by the experience you want
| If you want… | Consider… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A classic sequel with its expansion in the same package | Gothic II: Gold Edition or a platform’s equivalent Complete Classic release | Night of the Raven is associated with these editions. Check the current store description to confirm the contents of the specific release you plan to buy. TechRadar reports that Gothic II Complete Classic includes the expansion. |
| The first game’s premise with updated presentation and revised controls | Gothic 1 Remake | PC Gamer’s June 5, 2026 review describes changes to combat and controls, while warning that the game remains an acquired taste. Read PC Gamer’s review. |
| The original game as it was released | The original Gothic | Choose this explicitly if you want the historical version; the remake is a separate release, not another name for the original. |
| A more open third entry | Gothic 3 | Check the platform’s edition details before buying. TechRadar says Gothic 3 Classic includes community patch 1.75, but that report does not establish what every store edition currently contains. TechRadar’s report. |
What makes Gothic 1 Remake a different kind of choice?
The remake is the clearest option if you want to revisit the first game’s setting with a newer presentation and revised controls. PC Gamer notes more varied enemy attacks and streamlined controls, but also describes it as a game whose unconventional qualities will not suit everyone. A newer release does not automatically make it a conventional modern RPG.

Critics differ on the remake: PC Gamer scored it 6/10 in 2026; IGN scored it 7/10 in 2026; and RPG Site scored it 8/10 in 2026. GOG reproduces the latter two scores on its listing. These are assessments of the remake alone, not a comparison proving which entry is best. PC Gamer and GOG.
GOG’s listing also reproduces critical language calling the remake a faithful reconstruction of a cult classic. That is a reviewer characterization, not a guarantee that its design or pacing will work for every player.

Check the exact edition and platform
Edition names matter. Gothic II, Gothic II: Gold Edition, and Gothic II Complete Classic are not interchangeable labels, and the included expansion or patches can depend on the release. Before purchase, read the platform’s current listing for the exact edition and territory rather than assuming that a similarly named package includes the same content.
Gothic 1 Remake is listed for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Check the current listing for your platform and region, since storefront availability can change. Steam’s product listing.

Why review scores and player ratings do not settle the question
The available remake scores span 6/10 to 8/10, which illustrates disagreement about one game; they do not provide a consistent, comparable ranking of every mainline entry. Likewise, Steam showed 85% positive from 7,792 reviews when its listing was captured in 2026. That is a time-sensitive user-rating snapshot, not proof that the remake is the best Gothic game. Steam.
SteamDB’s franchise index lists both Gothic II: Gold Edition and Gothic 1 Remake, but storefront figures change over time. A meaningful rating comparison would need the same platform and collection date for every game; no directly comparable statistic establishes an overall series winner.
